Where would you move to in my situation?

So, I just got full approval to work remotely, which means I can pretty much go anywhere. I'm trying to decide where to go. I'd love to hear suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Kids are grown and out of the house. Or will be after this move! I would prefer to get a little bit of land (1-10 acres). We're tired of the cold and snow here in the mountains in California, so we'd like somewhere warmer if possible. I'm from Texas and my wife is from Florida, but we could go anywhere.

After we sell this house in California, we're going to have about 300-400K to put directly into a property. We're leaning towards Florida but not sure about what part. She is from the Miami area and does not want to go back there.

Depends on your lifestyles, hobbies and interests. What do y'all like about where you live now? And what don't you like besides the cold and snow?

FL and TX are hotter more months than it is cold where you are. I've only lived in three places, AR, ID and PA, that actually had seasons but that is preferable to Central Texas.

Does your wife remember the bugs in FL? That state is good for insects and reptiles, not humans.

I couldn’t go anywhere near the gulf coast region. I’m a sissy and hate humidity and I’m not ashamed to say it.

buy a big old John Madden bus and work from everywhere.

If you golf, Myrtle Beach is a nice place, though I don't know how much land you could find. Upstate NY is beautiful and the land is cheap, but...snow. Flagstaff, AZ is nice, but I'm not sure how much snow they get there, and it's probably pretty expensive. (Just a hunch.) I think if you went to Florida you'd miss the mountains. Maybe look into Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, etc? You may want to avoid Appalachia, unless you thought Ned Beatty got what was coming to him in Deliverance. I guess what I'm saying is, I have no idea.

The only things I like about this place are the mild summers, the scenery and yes, a lack of bugs compared to other places. We do have a lot of spiders but no cockroaches or mosquitos. It would probably be great if I liked snow sports but I just don't. Never even been up there and have no interest.

Other things I don't like start with the treacherous drive to get to any real civilization. We have a couple of grocery stores, a hardware store and restaurants. Anything else, you have to drive down this winding mountain road with a bunch of terrible drivers going both directions. I feel lucky to survive every time. I have to drive an hour down that road just to get to a doctor. I also hate pine trees with a passion. Awful trees that are dropping something bad year around.

Bugs and reptiles? Yeah, I used to have to shake out my shoes and towels in Lago Vista to avoid the scorpions, so I've been there. Can't say I've dealt with a gator though.

I'm not really into golf cause suck at it. Arizona is definitely on my wish list, but my wife hates the desert. Her Mother lives there and I get along with her, so I would move there. I like Tennessee but have never been to South Carolina or Kentucky. My best friend was stationed in Charleston, SC when he was in the military and hated it, which I always thought was strange. Seems like a cool city to me from the outside.

Flagstaff isn't in the desert, it's up in the mountains, but you can get to the desert pretty quickly. I was there when I was about 10, and it was beautiful. Saw a couple of Lynxes run across the road one night. Gorgeous animals!

I did not know that. I always think of Arizona as all desert, but it makes sense that it changes with the elevation like anywhere else.

I think if I had invested in a good snow blower years ago, I might feel different about the snow. It's just rough doing manual labor for a couple of hours with the shovel before you go to your actual job. It doesn't help that I'm in a resort town that fills up with people from Los Angeles every time it snows. It's like an obstacle course driving here with people sliding all over the place. I know you're a truck driver who I;m sure has seen way more crazy stuff than I have.

I once saw two cars backing up in the fast lane of I-95, because they missed their left exit...not one car...two cars...backing up...on the interstate...in the fast lane of a 55 m.p.h. zone...at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

On I-91, only a couple of miles from that incident, I once saw a guy driving with a cockatoo on his arm.

I once saw a guy driving while playing a guitar.

I saw a woman driving up I-91 while giving herself an exam, up to the wrist...and no, I don't feel better for having witnessed it.

Yeah...I've seen some stuff.

I’m in the exact same situation and am moving to the Big Island Jan. 7th. Real estate there is cheaper than any of the other Islands and that kind of down payment will get you a fine house.

TBH, I'd rather not think about it too much sometimes. lol
I think the craziest thing I ever saw on the road was my own experience. I was driving to Dallas during an ice storm at night and everything seemed ok in my little RWD sports car. They had salted all of those short overpasses that cover the ditches. I hit one of those things near Dallas that I guess had not been salted and my car fishtailed completely sideways. I corrected and spun back the other way but there was suddenly a car right in front of me at a dead stop. Corrected the other way and literally missed them by inches, doing a full spin. I hit a dry patch shortly after and my tires caught and straightened me out. There were at least 10 cars in the ditches off the side of the freeway on either side. People talk about slow motion in high stress situations, and I definitely experienced it then.

Happy for you man. Did you end up in Hilo or Kona or one of the smaller areas? I loved the Big Island but have only been to Hilo and Kona. I wish we had explored more the last time we were there.
