Where would you move to in my situation?

Thank you for taking the time to type this out. Great information and insight. We are plotting our trip to spend some time in most of the areas you highlighted. The only ones we are a definitely not looking at are the Keys, Miami, Daytona Beach and Jacksonville.

Glad it was helpful. One thing I should have pointed out is be careful about sink holes. Very common in Florida especially in areas between coastal and inland. If the price sounds too good, there could be a reason. Also, research hurricane wind ordinances as every county gets to make their own and know your home’s specifics. Miami has been the best for the longest. As a state, building stronger wind reinforced homes is only a recent thing. No matter where you live, you will most likely get a hurricane in your lifetime. Even Orlando gets Cat 1 if it comes in strong. If you live near the ocean, make sure you are aware what zone you live in when the hurricane storm surge arrives. Mandatory evacuations in some areas.

Also, if you like the outdoors, be ready for the gators. It’s the same as watching our for bears and elk if you live in the NW, or snakes down south. Doesn’t happen a lot, but they always get someone every year.

Wow, thanks for the info on the sink holes. I was not aware of that. After your post, I read up on that situation and eliminated some properties I was looking at in "sink hole alley". Definitely explains some of the good prices.

Yeah, you can hire an engineer to give you a good assessment if needed. A lot of people though that bought new houses and got stuck with them. Florida isn't a bad state at all, I honestly think I prefer Texas and a few others, but it would be near the top of my list of places I've lived or visited. 4,000,000 retirees can't all be wrong.

So, I just got full approval to work remotely, which means I can pretty much go anywhere. I'm trying to decide where to go. I'd love to hear suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Kids are grown and out of the house. Or will be after this move! I would prefer to get a little bit of land (1-10 acres). We're tired of the cold and snow here in the mountains in California, so we'd like somewhere warmer if possible. I'm from Texas and my wife is from Florida, but we could go anywhere.

After we sell this house in California, we're going to have about 300-400K to put directly into a property. We're leaning towards Florida but not sure about what part. She is from the Miami area and does not want to go back there.
Return to God's country... Texas.

Texas.
Low taxes - if you are North on Dallas Fort Worth - nice area.

East even better.
