From a team standpoint it does make sense. If you know you want the player beyond his current deal, you’re basically trading cap space in the distance future when you know the cap will balloon to where the contract is undervalued so that you can have a cap advantage today over teams that aren’t doing this.

On a long term Mahomes deal, yes. On Dak’s continually short deals? No.

The cap relief is nice, but the big takeaway from this is Dallas has no plans for moving on from Dak for many many years.

No. The takeaway is that they’re already adding to the $13 million cost for 2025. For a player not under contract.

They have no choice
They are over the cap already plus we have to add players just till fill out the roster and you have draft picks
The deal was structured for this very scenario

Of course they have a choice. They can start making smart decisions on bad contracts. Instead they continue to kick the can down the road.

Ummmm, I take it most of y’all don’t remember that Jerry and Stephen pretty much told everyone this would be happening when the deal was done. If the team is around $20M OVER the Cap, what do y’all expect them to do to get under? Cutting the Big $$$ guys puts them FURTHER OVER the cap…all these deals were made with the flexibility to restructure them.
It’s simple math
It’s not like there is another option

Why don’t they ‘have a choice’?
They have a choice, but Jerry is old and he wants to win now and he's dumb enough to think Dak is good enough.

I hate watching this organization fail year after year and make bad decisions, but the only satisfaction I get is knowing Jerry will never see another championship because of ego and pride.

What would you propose they do
We have some contracts that haven’t been the greatest but all are structured with reasonable outs over next couple years. But until then I don’t see an option to clear enough cap space this year without Daks deal being done

This seems like a good thing and It seems Dak is a team player willing to help us save cap room.

I’m not shocked Dak continues to get all the criticism he gets, and he does need to grow and play better, however he is a really great QB. Elite QBs don’t come around very often. I stay humble to that because I remember the QB search after Aikman, Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, drew Henson, Bledsoe, & Vinny. I see other franchises struggle for years in that search, bears, skins for example.

I think we can win with Dak, he passes the eye test and he has had record breaking numbers, and has dominated the division. I think he can only get better. Every great QB had a slump this season or bad games we just had a bad game on our first Playoff game, it really sucks but it happens, look at Rogers.

I just hope we can continue to get Dak great coaching and development, and clean up the penalties and time management.

Where do Cowboys find these blind homers without a basic understanding of football

Where?

Dak’s jock?

It's the same thing the whole league does every year to get cap relief. Go check out Aaron Rodgers contract:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/aaron-rodgers-3745/

Patrick Mahomes:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/patrick-mahomes-21751/
'Man your talking about Rodger and Mahomes....two of the best of the best.... We are talking DAK PRESCOT.....not Aaron Rodgers....but I get your point.....I just dont like extending DAK until he proves he can WIN in the playoffs.... Romo's huge contract and extensions didn't help the Cowboys...and although we all saw DAK restructure coming......it just points to Jerry Jones doing the same ol stuff...hoping something changes... Sooner or later the Jones need to change there approach to doing football business.....

Cant keep doing business the same way and hoping it changes....you got to make a change.....after 25 years of losing a new approach is needed in Dallas

We don’t need a rebuild. The problem is we will probably just let good players go and try to build a cheap team around Dak.

Eventually Parsons will be the highest paid Non-QB in the league though.
Thats the business plan my friend, that's jerry's plan.
Keep it relevant and they will pay.

Just a reminder that next season we are going to be seating home watching other teams playing in their respective conference championships. And like always Dallas planning for the future...

The best scenario (and best bet) is that Dak is still playing at that time, and therefore earning the money shuffled forward to 2026 way back in 2022.

That’s more likely the worst scenario.

Sooooo does this mean we can cut him in a couple years?

I don’t think there’s going be many fans happier than you when the Cowboys are stuck looking for a QB. You’ll relish the moment seeing the team end up like Washington or one of these other teams that are stuck with a castoff.

I would suggest the wise thing. The difficult choice. Cut or trade big contracts like Lawrence and Cooper. Pay your dues for once instead of mortgaging the future to keep an underachieving team together. Stop kidding ourselves.
