Rotational piece. Hopefully a solid one moving forward as he puts on a little more heft.
I was gonna say he might be destined for a Dorance type of role. Dorance started out as a 200-something snaps guy for his first couple years, worked his way up to 300-something snaps in 2020 and finally blew up for 500+ snaps this year thanks mainly to Gregory and Lawrence missing a combined 16 games.
But then I looked at the numbers and Gholston actually got 400+ snaps as a rookie. I was a little shocked to realize he played that much because he sure didn't do much with all that playing time. He had roughly the same workload as Randy Gregory this year. But finished with only 1 sack and zero tackles for loss.
0 TFL's really stands out on the stat sheet, given the volume of snaps he played. I mean, Osa had 6. Watkins has 5. Bashem had 3. Gallimore had 3, and I think he only played a month. I dunno, maybe somebody who studies film will say that the stats are misleading and that Gholston actually did a good job of tying people up and they might say he did more good work with his playing time than the stat sheet shows. I dunno, it's possible.
I feel like he's gonna need to amp it up in the weight room and come back ready to be much more of a handful next year.
