Amari Cooper was overrated here. Look at the numbers

  • He has tended to disappear in the bigger games when your big play receiver is MOST needed. Not all big games. He did have some big games. But not enough to make him a star. Here are some examples:
    • In both playoff losses Cooper played in, (2018, 2021) he averaged less than 70 yards per game.
    • In 2019’s most critical game that decided the NFC East vs Filly, Cooper had 4 receptions for 24 yds and famously stood on the sidelines in the last drive.
    • Another critical game in 2019, vs NE on the road, Coop got shut out with zero catches. (Randall Cobb and Gallup had 86 and 55 yds that day)
    • In that terrible loss against Arizona last year that cost us the #2 seed, Coop had 3 catches for 18 yds, despite 8 targets and two drops.

.

In fairness to Amari, ..for that key critical Philly game in 2019 ... BOTH cooper and Randall Cobb were benched in the final key drive - Coaches decision.

Yeah, I'm in a dart league. I bought the best darts I could find. But I can never win. Those darts suck. I'm pretty sure it's not me.

Who would have thought that a fat, poorly conditioned, overrated, and overpaid player would cause such on ruckus on the zone ? Hang his picture on your wall and light a candle and move on.

THIS IS NOT A HATE AMARI COOPER THREAD. I like Cooper. But I also think it was a smart move for the Cowboys, both for obvious cap reasons and the fact that he was overrated here.

Now that I have that out of the way, let us count the reasons why Cooper’s release could be a good thing:
  • Amari Cooper is a very good receiver. He’s an excellent route runner. BUT- he is not a great 3rd down receiver (when you need a 3rd down conversion)
    • In 2021, Cooper was 26th in the league in 3rd down receptions for a first down. For $20 mil a season, that’s not great. (Btw- Cedee Lamb was 16th)
  • He’s not as much of a big play guy as he used to be- In YAC yardage, Cooper was way below avg- GET THIS- Dalton Schultz, Cedric Wilson and Tony Pollard all had better YAC numbers than Coop in 2021.
    • Cooper has never been that great in YAC numbers in his career. He’s really more of a possession receiver which makes both his price tag and his lack of big 3rd down plays a problem.
    • His last two seasons, he’s only averaging about 12 yards per reception. Again, more of a possession receiver than a big play receiver.
  • He has tended to disappear in the bigger games when your big play receiver is MOST needed. Not all big games. He did have some big games. But not enough to make him a star. Here are some examples:
    • In both playoff losses Cooper played in, (2018, 2021) he averaged less than 70 yards per game.

I’m not here to bash Amari Cooper. He’s a very good receiver. But Cowboys fans, let’s be honest. Is he a top 20 receiver in this league? NO. Not in receptions, YAC, 3rd down conversions…etc, etc. We cannot pay a WR $20 mil a season with that kind of return.

Will we miss Cooper? Maybe some. But the cap savings could provide more help at other positions without losing much on offense.

In my book letting him go is the right move.

Amari never was a top 5 WR. And the trade was one of the dumbest things the Joneses did. It was a desperation move. And that happens when you are not able to plan for the future. But the Joneses are another thing to discuss for another thread.

Remember Amari was the one who upped Prescotts game who was playing like a true 4th round pick at that time. Now that Prescotts play is back to his talent level (because DCs know how to scheme against him) doesnt mean Cooper's play declined. Cooper is a good #1 WR who frees up others to make plays. We right now dont have a true #1 WR. And dont let you get fooled by Schultz's numbers. He is just a medicore TE. Heck i love the gutsy catches he makes. Still he is not a good player.

I agree that Cooper tends to disappear. But i am just not convinced thats this is his own fault. This has also to do with the way Moore calls plays. And his playcalling is also very depended on the low talent level he has at the starting QB position.

In the end i dont think its a good idea to let Cooper go. but i also think that its Cooper who wants out of here and not Dallas who wants him gone. Believe me a WR knows what to expect from his QB and Cooper is very frustrated with Prescott. Thats for sure.

Cooper ain’t a #1 WR. Over 30 players had more receiving yards than that dude last year. Make all your apologies for the guy, but cutting him is the best thing to do.

A true #1 WR is not meassured by his numbers.

And at least comment about my arguments when you post your opinion.

I don't get the animosity. He's a 15m WR whose paid 20m and his contract isn't guaranteed. We paid him and average of 7m his first two seasons with the Cowboys so we at least got some value for the draft picks. I'd keep him if he'd take 15m but that seems unlikely so it's probably time to move on.

Cooper wasn't getting open whether it's his fault or it's Moore's fault. He had the second lowest avg separation of any player with 800 yds or more receiving at 2.5. Guys like Tee Higgins and Mike Evans can get away with that because of their size and physicality. Then there's guys like Kupp and Tyreke who are at 3.6 which is over a yard more in separation on every pass route than Amari which is huge. Deebo was at 3.3 and Ceedee at 3.1. Amari HAS to be above 3yds to be successful.

I have no animosity for Coop. He greatly helped this team in 2018 make the playoffs. My problem is not Amari. It’s the FO selling him to the fans and paying him like he’s a top 5 receiver when he clearly is not and never will be. That’s just the truth. Not animosity towards Coop.

His numbers show him to mostly be a really good route running possession receiver. Every team needs one. He’s great at that. He’s averaged about 12 yds per reception and in 9 games last year avg 50 yards or less. But they’re paying him like he’s DaVante Adams, Justin Jefferson or Jamar Chase. He’s nothing like those guys. Again, not his fault, just the truth.

I quickly went through the thread and didn't see it.

Is there a measurement for how the team has performed with or without him since he came here? Its my gut feeling that the offense goes in the toilet without him but he really hasn't missed many games.

From my perspective, Denver figured out that Zeke no longer was the driver for the offense and that if they flooded the mid range zones to stop the WR's, the Cowboys couldn't move the ball.

Here is the problem. Yes, he is not worth 20M but when has this management actually used the cap savings to really improve other positions?

The 20M to him is just one mistake. The cumulative effect of Prescott, Lawrence, Elliott and Cooper and their underperforming against those contracts is the problem.

The Joneses are never satisfied making one mistake, they make them in clusters. No team can overpay that many players.

The fault of production is much more on the OC and company than Amari. And Dak as well.

How about Debo Samuels and Justin Jefferson? Top 5 receivers who have Jimmy Garropolo and Kirk Cousins throwing to them. Decent QBs at best. But those guys are stars.

Another good example of this is Allen Robinson, the Chi receiver, and Jacksonville before that. He was hurt some last year but put up 102 and 98 receptions over two seasons with people like Blake Bortles, Mitch Trubisky and Andy Dalton throwing to him.

Having a great QB is nice. But great receivers always seem to bubble up no matter who’s throwing it to them.

All I know is Amari 10+ targets= 3 times. Results= 364 yards 4 TDs. All other games= 5.2 targets a game.

Ya when Dak threw the ball to Amari his QB rating was 117 so Amari was valuable to the team. The problem is if defenses took him away our coaching staff weren't figuring out how to get him the ball. Maybe some of that is on Dak not trying to force it more to Amari but if he's not open it's hard for a guy like Dak who doesn't like to throw INTs to try to thread the needle into a tightly covered receiver.,

He's not overrated, he's under used and the TEN TOE MEDIOCRE SLOTH is responsible for that. We're stuck with a SLOTH that is too slow reading defenses and too slow finding open receivers and TEs. Romo was great pointing out how the SLOTH refused to throw the ball when everyone is running free. He would rather hold the pig skin and squeeze the air out of it. Oh, I know you're going to point out all the passing stats that the SLOTH accumulated this past season, but they came against all the toads on the schedule and I don't believe the SLOTH is being paid to be that ELITE FROG GIGGER!

Stats should look decent with 40 attempts per game. He nickel and dimed his way to a decent season. Dak doesn't have great anticipation and seems always late with the ball. He is killing the recievers yac.I can see recievers opening up all day on the broadcast. To bad the guy your paying 40 million can't see them or won't pull the trigger.

Exactly. People like to blame Dak for being the reason a receiver struggles, but Amari SHOULD be able to make plays regardless if he was truly a $20M/year superstar. We can cut ties with this contract without major repercussions so it is definitely worth considering.

Why is it that Gallup and Lamb are able to match Cooper’s best season? If he were the better player, would it not show on the field?
well your probably looking at stats, which are flawed, Stats dont mean much.
I am ok with them cutting amari, I think it is stupid, but thats ok, now lamb will be exposed , and we will see if he was worth the 1st round pick or not.
And gallup, it will take him awhile to get back to where he was, if at all.
