After a night of shaking my head, I've looked into this Tyson Smith pick further, and it's really not that bad of a reach pick.

He's not the traditional "project player" that we all tend to hate in early rounds.

Smith is big enough, strong enough, quick enough, and nasty enough to play in the league RIGHT NOW. I get so tired of waiting for guys to spend 2 years in the weight room before they can stand up to NFL defensive linemen. Not the case with this kid. He's ready in that regard.

Technique isn't hard to teach if the player has the athletic and physical tools already. Smith will require coaching, but he's also got Tyron right next to him, and he has very much the same frame.

Smith is a natural left tackle, so he can immediately play at guard, then slide over when Tyron retires. That alone makes a ton of sense to pick a guy like this.

At that point in the draft with what was left, I would have preferred one of the two linebackers there so Parsons could run free. However, this offensive line issue is looming large, and so I get it.

Plus, I do trust McClay, and apparently he like this guy a lot even if it wasn't his preferred pick to fall to Dallas.

Tonight has to make this pick make perfect sense however.

In my opinion, it's not wrong to think outside of the box.

It’s the old adage- you have two guys run from point A to B. Both get there at the same time. One has perfect form and the other has awful form. Who do you want? The guy with the awful form cause once he’s coached up he will be much faster than the other guy.

He’s already developed a ton to get to where he’s at. Now he can take the next step. I’m all in on him.

IMO any OL picked in the first round has to be considered a "win" with this franchise because they seem to miss on OL any time after that. Lord knows we need tackle help so check that box too! The thing I'm more concerned about is the OL coach, by all appearances he was an epic fail last season... or maybe it's our boy-wonder offensive coordinator who needs freaking help. This hands-off approach from McCarthey is BS.

LOL, you might want to start by getting his name right. But really, we shall see how it goes. Not like its gonna affect our lives or anything.

We obviously picked for need as the DE from Fl St and Center from Iowa were the BPA as following picks illustrated.

We will be watching how those players career develop versus our guy.

My only problem with the pick is there is another guy with the same frame as Tyler Smith, that plays very similar. Marquis Hayes. And we could get Hayes in the third round. That means, when Dallas falls in love with a guy they aren't looking around in the draft to find similar players. You know a guy is a stand out in his draft class when there is nobody you can compare him too. That's how you find the real studs in every draft. Using comparisons.

I'm not sure I'm sold on the left tackle idea. The draft descriptions I've read said he is mauler with bad technique, which sounds more like what you see at guard or right tackle, not left tackle.

I am with you. It's not even close to being a given he's a future NFL LT. I think people have talked themselves into this being a great pick because they've convinced themselves he's Smith's heir apparent at LT.

But he's A LONG WAY from being a future LT. He has enough issues technique wise that make you wonder if he can play a high level LG, let alone being able to play LT.

For me, LT isn't even a consideration. If he can play LG well for as long as Martin has been able to hold down RG, then I'll consider this a win. But if you convinced yourself this is a great pick because he's gonna play LT? You are biting off more than you can chew IMO.

Here is my issue…one of many…we picked a guy they said is rated 16 but Stephen is saying he may or may not start. Your #1 pick who was 16 wasn’t a starter in your head. That means project. I don’t get it.

The only positive if he plays guard is he won’t get pushed back in the run game like Williams. He’ll probably hold as much though.

A guy on The Fan was saying, most holding calls come from poor footwork. So can Philbin teach him proper footwork.
In his interview with The Fan, Smith said he is ready to learn and be coached upped. That he is always willing to learn and never stops to improve. He will do what it takes to get better, and help the team.
That he would play OG or any of the 5 positions to contribute.

I don't think Stephen gets it either.

I agree with all you said,
My issue is, is that the front office refused to address Oline in free agency whatsoever and put us in a position to pick for need over BPA.
That is not a long term winning strategy in the NFL.

I agree with their thinking of drafting a future OT and plugging him into OG; however, to say he is rated 16 on their draft board is crazy. He might not even play guard this year because of his lack of development. They need to sign him, like today and send him to live with our OL coach.
