"Mike McCarthy is currently the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, but ESPN's Marcus Spears believes that could change by next year. That's because he thinks Jerry Jones is eyeing Sean Payton.

"Have we not paid attention to Jerry Jones for a long time? When Wade Phillips was there, Jerry Jones wanted and was grooming Jason Garrett to be the head coach," Spears said on NFL Live. "He is waiting for Sean Payton to say I want to come to Dallas, and they're going to make it happen and give the New Orleans Saints what they need.""

yeah I doubt sean would come to dallas.
Maybe if he had control like jimmy had back in 90's

He would be crazy to come here , unless offered a ton of cash, and was doing it just for the money.

Jones boys are control freaks, when they hire a HC, what they want is a game mgr, PC guy after the games, and maybe a little coaching here and there.

Jerry let mike hire his staff except for OC lol, then took over and hired Quinn.
To be HC for cowboys is really just a game mgr, cheerleader. do some PC's

Payton used Alvin Kamara very well. I would love for him to come here and use Pollard the same way. But Payton may not be any different than McCarthy. If he has to keep Moore and let Moore run the offense without Intervening, he's doomed.

Some will say Payton is no better than McCarthy, because they both only won one Super Bowl with Hall of Fame QB's. But I think Payton gets more respect from Jerry. Which means more control. McCarthy is the ugly duckling due to lack of control, IMO. So bringing in Payton or giving MM more control is even steven in my book.

When the time comes I think MM will say...It's not me it's Moore. The guy you made me keep is messing things up. If it were up to me I'd be doing this and that. So I think McCarthy is just holding on to that trump card for now. He'll play it when he needs it.

Dan Quinn has a lot better chance of becoming the Cowboys next HC than Sean Payton. Payton was the assistant HC under Bill Parcells in Dallas. He already knows what it’s like to work for Jerry. He’ll want no part of the Cowboys head coaching job. Besides McCarthy is making less than half what Payton was making in New Orleans. Jerry isn’t going to pay what Sean Payton’s asking price would be even if he was open to being the HC. Better brace yourselves for Dan Quinn if it doesn’t work out for McCarthy this season.

Mike McCarthy need not be concerned about Marcus Spears' comments. Just do a good job and there will be no cause to lose his job. On the other hand, Marcus Spears speaks the truth, Jerry no doubt has his eye on Sean Payton. But he needs a damn good excuse to replace Big Mike with Sean Payton. I don't think he has it right now so it will have to be over something that happens this season. I'll be watching.

MM was hit with a worldwide virus in his first season w/Dallas. No practices, no preseason & limited players. You can only do so much w/what you have. The 2nd year he took the franchise to the playoffs w/12 wins. Could care less about what anyone says about coach MM. He's a decent coach & has proven so.

Always easier sitting behind a keyboard & criticizing when in fact NOT ONE critic could even begin knowing the difficulty of coaching an NFL team.

Man, this would really make my day. Not because I don't like McCarthy, I really do. Great coach. It's just that Payton is so much better. One of the best today.

I'd vomit if they did that. Giving up first rounders for a coach? Dallas would be a laughing stock.

He's also prone to dumb clock management, as I've brought it up every time he did it on these boards. Also, what makes him better than what we have now? He's been to one super bowl in how many years? Since 2006? And that was with having one of the all time great quarterbacks.

So does Payton get the 'influence' over the Jones as he did in NO? It would be interesting to see the dynamic.... "Stephen I want.....?"....."Stephen, why are you crying?"

Second point, how much compensation would we need to pay NO (isnt Payton under contract for a further year?). As the Jones need to win every deal the negotiation may take two years to complete.

I actually like Quinn but I don't think money would the issue with Payton. Payton would want full control where Quinn would be fine with Jerry doing the grocery shopping.

It will make no odds if Jerry and Stephen keep running Dallas it way they have for the majority of the last 26 years.
And let's not forget, the next HC to win a SB with one team and then win it with another will be the first to do so.

i actually think if it were anywhere but Dallas it would be pretty even. Their resume’s are identical. One ring with a HOF QB. BUT I think/hope that Sean would be able to win in spite of Jerry and would know how to neutralize the man-baby GM’s damage to the teams culture and Mike is unable to overcome that.

Eyeing Payton and getting Payton are two very different things. Jerry might be eyeing him but Payton has an agenda that doesn't include Jerry. He'll be doing some active broadcasting for the foreseeable future. I doubt Payton will look to Jerry to be his future boss if his broadcasting venture is less than successful. As far as Mike McCarthy is concerned, the upcoming season needs to prove a success if he's likely to remain the Cowboys' HC. If that doesn't materialize, look for Dan Quinn to replace him as the Cowboys' HC. In that event, don't be shocked if Kellen Moore joins MM on the unemployed list.

I would have believed the notion that Payton might come to Dallas until I realized how important draft picks are to the Cowboys. Let’s just say the Cowboys finish 7-10. There is no way the Cowboys give up a top 15 pick and more for Payton. The Cowboys fill their roster out with the draft not free agency.

Marcus isn't the sharpest tac in the box. We've been saying this since Peyton announced he was leaving, but the JG analogy is absurd and kinda dumb to anyone familiar with the how JG came to coach the cowboys. If Spears thinks there is an analogy to be made between Jerry hiring JG and the prospect of hiring Peyton, it just shows that he knows less than the people "not paying attention" to the cowboys.

Plus, Peyton is never going to come to Jerry on bended knee and declare he wants to coach the dysfunctional Dallas Cowboys. Its likely going to be the other way around when this team flames out next year.
