Warner Bros. Discovery Knows It Can't Compete With Disney. That's a Good Thing for Investors
By Dani Cook | Nasdaq
August 7, 2022

<snip>

Playing to its strengths

The merger that founded Warner Bros. Discovery saw the new company assume $43 billion of debt from WarnerMedia, with Zaslav primarily focused on paying it down. In addition to a move away from underperforming live-action family content, the executive shut down streaming service CNN+, stopped production on various European series, and oversaw the departure of multiple WarnerMedia top execs. The CEO is on a mission to cut any part of the business that does not guarantee profits, especially in terms of content.

HBO has built a brand on prestige TV aimed at adult viewers, with its most-watched shows to date being the graphic fantasy drama Game of Thrones and Euphoria, a series with strong themes of drug addiction and violence. These top-rated shows fit right in with HBO's extensive library of award-winning mature dramas, which have helped boost HBO Max. A move away from live-action family content that doesn't lend itself to the service's most popular content is a step in the right direction.

Additionally, one of Warner Bros. Discovery's most prominent brands is DC, which has started differentiating itself from Marvel by offering grittier, more mature superhero titles. The recent direction for DC fits HBO Max's business model of adult content, with the service recently seeing success with the original DC series Peacemaker. The TV-MA show had the biggest single-day performance of a Max Original, with the finale's viewership up 44% from its premiere.

Although Warner Bros. Discovery is moving away from live-action family content, it will continue producing animation geared toward adults and children. While family animated series don't suit HBO Max's adult-focused library, the move makes sense given how popular and cost-effective the genre is. In July, 90% of the most popular children and family TV series were animated, with Warner Bros. Discovery owning three of the top 10 titles. The company's ownership of Cartoon Network and animated series from Discovery allow HBO Max to continue profiting from successful content with little risk.

Superhero Film Fatigue Is Up From Last Year — Even Among Marvel Fans
By Saleah Blancaflor | Morning Consult
August 4, 2022

<snip>

FvdaedB_d.webp

  • The share of adults who said they enjoy superhero movies dropped 5 percentage points from 64% in November to 59% in a late July survey conducted following the Comic-Con announcements. Meanwhile, the share of adults who do not enjoy superhero movies jumped 5 points in that time, from 36% to 41%. That share has increased 9 points since a 2018 survey.
  • While 82% of Marvel fans still enjoy superhero movies, per the July survey, nearly one-third (31%) said they’re “getting a little tired of so many of them,” a 2-point uptick from last year. The 82% who enjoy them is down from 87% in November. The share of Marvel fans who do not enjoy superhero movies increased 5 points in that time, from 13% to 18%.
  • If there is a silver lining for Marvel, DC Comics and the rest of the superhero industry, it’s that the share of Gen Z adults who said they enjoy watching superhero movies and will continue to watch them in theaters increased from 47% in November to 53% in July. The generation was also the likeliest to say they plan on watching Marvel’s new releases in theaters. The latest “Batman” film, which starred Robert Pattinson and was released by Warner Bros. in March, quickly became fodder for content on the Gen Z-dominated app TikTok. The generation may also be excited by the possibility of pop star Harry Styles taking on a larger role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the introduction of other young actors like Hailee Steinfeld.
  • Meanwhile, the shares of millennials, baby boomers and Gen Xers who said they enjoy watching superhero movies and will continue to watch them in theaters each dropped compared to last year.

Meh, .. since i never saw that survey poll, or any other similar to it, , i'd take it with a grain of salt...
i'm sticking to the box office numbers, both opening ....continuing weeks as well as the global numbers.

Who cracks you up the most? You can choose up to three characters in the poll.

Both Guardians movies have the best humor of any DC or Marvel superhero film outside of Deadpool's in my opinion. I created a poll to see which main GOTG characters who members find the funniest. Members can select up to three characters total.

Technically, Yondu's right hand man, Kraglin, might not be considered a main character. However, the character has some really funny moments (even in the ending credits scene during GOTG Vol 2), so I included him too. :)

*Options are listed alphabetically by the actor's last name.

Box office or not, there is no question some of the audience has been or is experiencing fatigue. Some folks get tired of seeing and listening to stuff in all forms of media. It is nothing new.

However, the simple cure to entertainment fatigue is putting, what has been exhausting, behind you and moving on to something else. In this case, there are always more non-superhero movie adaptations to switch one's love of films to instead of continuing to watch them. Real fatigue experienced by both audience and non-audience members alike will neither stop such movies from being made available to audience members who do want to see them nor prevent movie studios from making them.

That said, one side benefit of audience fatigue is making movie studios re-assess what they are producing and possibly produce better films. Batgirl is one example, although there are several other reasons why the movie got canned also.

I think part of it is the quality, as of late, seems like the quality has been kinda middling and uneven. Another may be there are more lesser known characters being featured. That is fine for the hard core fans, but less appealing for more casual fans and probably less so for people that didn't read the comics.

I think going forward for Disney they need to be cognizant about how they handle the MCU, it's a double edged sword. For the Hard core fans it's great to have a large immersive universe where stories and characters are interconnected, it may be less so for casual fans or the general public. We've already been seeing that, some people asking, do I have to watch "X series" before I watch the next movie to understand what's going on.

Personally, I've been finding myself more drawn to the less traditional superhero comics or less traditional takes like "The Boys", "Peacemaker", Pennyworth", "Doom Patrol", "The Umbrella Academy", "The Sandman" and I'm really looking forward to "Grendel". I didn't even mention one Marvel property and I was always a bigger reader of Marvel comics than DC, so I hoping "She-Hulk" will win me over.

I think you make a great point. Is there some measure if superhero fatigue? Sure. Nothing lasts forever.

But there’s also an underwhelming slate of Phase 4 material and decisions made. That undeniably played a role as well.

‘Flash’ Star Ezra Miller Charged By Vermont State Police With Burglary
By Anthony D'Alessandro, Dominic Patten | Deadline
August 8, 2022

justice-league.jpg

More tabloid mishaps for The Flash star Ezra Miller as the Vermont State Police have charged the actor with a burglary related to an incident in May.

The police report reads:

On 05/01/2022 at approximately 1755 hours, the Vermont State Police was notified of a burglary complaint at a residence on County Road in the town of Stamford, Vermont. The initial findings indicated that several bottles of alcohol were taken from within the residence while the homeowners were not present. As a result of an investigation that included surveillance videos and statements, probable cause was found to charge Ezra M. Miller with the offense of felony burglary into an unoccupied dwelling.

Cops located the Fantastic Beasts star at 11:23 p.m. August 7 and issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court Bennington Criminal Division on Sept. 26 for arraignment on the burglary charge. The Vermont State Police worked with the Bennington County State’s Attorney’s Office on the investigation.

Exclusive: Valiant's Harbinger Film Moves Forward At Paramount With New Director
By Paul Shirey | Screen Rant
August 8, 2022

harbinger-comic-adaptation-2.jpg

Valiant's Harbinger film adaptation is moving forward at Paramount with a new director. Harbinger is based on the comic publisher's title of the same name, originally created in 1992 by Jim Shooter and David Lapham, which follows teenager Peter Stanchek, an evolved superhuman with psionic powers, called a Psiot or Harbinger. Stanchek's powers mirror that of Toyo Harada, a powerful Japanese businessman, and also a Psiot, who runs the Harbinger Foundation, an organization that recruits and trains other Psiots, forming a personal army for Harada.

Harbinger has been in development since 2016, originally intended to launch Valiant's own cinematic universe with Sony Pictures. However, Valiant's Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel was the first to make it to the big screen, with its box office forced to contend with coronavirus closures, forcing a sudden pivot to a home video release. Harbinger then shifted from Sony to Paramount, meaning that the characters would not be a part of the same universe going forward. The last news on Harbinger's feature debut was that it was expected sometime in 2021, but has obviously been delayed. Now, there's some promising news that should get Valiant and Harbinger fans excited.

Screen Rant's sources have confirmed that Paramount's Harbinger has secured Paul Downs Colaizzo (Brittany Runs a Marathon) to direct, with the film being fast tracked to follow on the heels of Top Gun: Maverick's massive box office success. The idea is to expand on the Psiots of the Valiant Universe, who could potentially become Paramount's own superhero property akin to Marvel or DC. With Paramount riding high on the success of Top Gun: Maverick, as well as the above expectation growth of Paramount+ to nearly 64 million subs, the growth potential for Harbinger and Valiant in live-action form has gotten stronger.

Marvel explains the differences between Catwoman and Black Cat
By Elizabeth Espinoza | Ruetir
August 8, 2022

catwoman-y-gata-negra-diferencias.jpg

In the world of comics, it’s quite common for publishers to copy competing characters. A clear example is what happens between the Gata Negra of Marvel Comics y Catwoman of DC Comics. Due to the many similarities between them, it is easy to believe that Catwoman y Gata Negra they are the same character. Both are highly talented thieves, arguably anti-heroines, dress in black, have “cat” in their name, and have romances with the superheroes who often come after them. But these similarities are only skin deep. Under the surface, Catwoman y Black Cat They are very different characters, and Marvel has wanted to make it clear.

Currently, Felicia Hardy, Gata NegraYou are in a bit of a troubled situation. In her youth she was the protégé of a world-famous thief known as Black Fox. But she was not the only protected, because there was another girl who was also a rival of Felicia, Tamara Blake. Blake has recently returned to Felicia’s life and has stolen the armor Iron Cat that was created for Ready Neta by Tony Stark. Wearing this armor, Tamara he seeks revenge on her, whom he blames for his mentor’s death.

In Iron Cat #2 of Jed MacKay y Pere Perez, Tamara remember your youth with Gata Negra when they were still training to be master thieves. In fact, Felicia She was born surrounded by riches, so she didn’t need to steal to survive. Instead, she stole from her for fun, for to her crime was a game she always wanted to win. This contrasted with the seriousness with which Tamara she took her job as a thief. But that’s got that grudge against Feliciabecause he considers her a reckless, superficial person who could put everyone in danger

It makes some good points. I think having a single comic universe is kinda cool, in theory, I think some of it is overblown too. I don't think everything has to fit into a single universe, sometimes I like to see different takes on a familiar character or their world. The Batman property is a good example, I liked most of the movies (aside from some of those 90's ones), I liked "Gotham", "Pennyworth", "Joker", etc all different takes on familiar characters.

The Superman properties have a bunch of different takes that appeal to different demographics from the Superman movies to "Smallville", "Supergirl", "Superman and Lois". It's OK to have different takes sometimes, what is canon in the comics wasn't necessarily always canon either, characters get retconned quite frequently. Tell a good story and keep within the spirit of the character.

I think that's something the MCU struggles to do, certain stories can't really be told because they don't fit into the framework they've laid out. The recent Daredevil/Black Widow discussion is an example of that.

I think DC does a better job overall with their TV and streaming shows, not all of it is to my tastes, but there's just more to choose from and not all from a single streaming service. With the MCU, they do one series at a time and try to make that appeal to more people and if you don't like that one, it's a wait for the next one.

DC does struggle with their movies, but having an integrated universe is not really going to solve that. You need to have compelling characters and a good story and find the right people to bring that to life. MCU as of late, have been uneven in quality, the box office may make it look otherwise, but think that's in part a product of Disney's massive hype machine.

I think a DC verse would be cool for the movies, but don't think they should feel everything should have to fit into that box. Personally I don't care where "Doom Patrol" or The Sandman" fit into that universe, just keep telling their stories.

that may be it ..it's." nuthin' new" ... how many Bat Girls are they gonna keep regurgitating ?

How many Batmans ...Supermans ... are gonna be make, remake, re-introduced ...?

as Road" mentioned ... it may also about quality - and that goes into series as well.
yes, there's a blitz of superheroes particularly Marvel , ..but has there been quality amongst them ?

i don't hear anyone, any whispers, any raves about Hawkeye, who was already the boring member of the Avengers but yet he gets his own Disney series ?
Heck i always thought it was the snoring, boring Hawkeye that should've croaked... instead of Black Widow . .

Will Disney bring back Daredevil's hyper radar senses ?

Netflix was too cheap to include it ... but i'd love to see it in his Disney DD series.
