Those comparing him to LA are frankly full of it.

I have never seen anyone dominate like LA did.

Smith has a lot of power and wants to hit which is very important; but tap the brakes BIG TIME comparing him to LA.

I think its fair to make stylistic comparisons in both of there techniques, which is what i think I am mostly seeing....saying that any rookie (even the best OT prospect in history) is comparable to the best offensive linemen to ever play the game in terms what he will become is just silly.

Good point and to make matters worse the chance of them leading the league in turnover differential again is gonna be harder to achieve……that helped get those 12 wins.
That too. Turnovers probably helped a lot with that as well.

Yeah. I agree.

But really. What did he do wrong on either holding call? The first was especially bad.

Tyler Smith appeared to whiff on ONE PLAY in pass pro. His first holding call where he buried the LB looked clean to me. His second holding call he let his hands get outside of his shoulders and got too much jersey - I can live with that call. One thing I DON’T remember from last night wasTyler Smith being pushed backwards. There were several times when Smith stonewalled his guy and then hit somebody 4-5 yards downfield. Strength is CLEARLY not an issue with this guy. He’s gonna do fine in run blocking. I think he’s a stud. He just needs to work on his technique in pass protection.

Despite the 2 penalties one of which was questionable. He’s a rookie and will make mistakes but he’s going to be the starter.

Thanks, my friend. If he stays healthy, he will be a potent player like Larry Allen was.

The question I have is. Why did he get so many holding calls against him in college? There must be a reason.

He likes to grab and throw. He’s strong enough he doesn’t have to. But is he quick enough This is all going to be put on the coaching staff that we don’t have

He has got to block and forget about pancaking. They are gonna flag him apparently if he takes someone to the ground.

I like his moxie, it's just what we could have used in the wild card game. When we had Larry Allen, opponents set to go against him would suddenly develop an injury and show up on the injury report the week they played us. There's an intimidation factor that sets the tone for the whole game. Also, when a player dominates his opponent on a play it fires up his teammates.

  • Saturday also was the NFL debut for first-round pick Tyler Smith. McCarthy said Smith "did a lot of really good things" starting at left guard. "You talk about being physical. You talk about having a play style, he definitely brings that to the table," McCarthy said. "His mistakes were more technical, the finish component of it. … I thought it was lot of good snaps to learn from in his first time out there live."

i rather have player young and learning but physical and dominating comit few penalties, then having the penalty's come from being weak and losing, so you grab. ie Cwill etc Tylers penalty's while gray area type came from pancaking guy and not from being beat and reaching out. rather the penalty's come from aggression and strength vs weakness.

.If i was MM and maybe they do this but like some other type of alternate ideas to keep guys from fumbling or dropping balls, why dont they make all the OL wear boxing gloves all week this week in practice as reminder to not grab and hold,. Try and block without fingers LOL
I mean ive defenders lie Piere paul and some injured with broken hand wear ball on their fist and play without a hand and still tackle and bat balls down etc

why not over emphasize the hands thing and make them all wear boxing gloves this week of practice..???o_O:rolleyes::popcorn:

To be blunt if he wants to learn how to do it screw the coaching staff- he needs to shadow Zack and watch how he does things.
