New league rule coming for concussions

Troy left the game because of repeated concussions. It's a big deal. The Dolphins screwed the pooch on this one. I think Tua needs to be held out for at least a month. One more bad concussion and they will be feeding him through a straw. I think they need to mandate the better helmets, although I'm not sure what can safe you when you hit the back on your head on the ground. FWIW, I played on flag football on turf many many years ago and it was about 1/4" of padding laid over asphalt then covered with synthetic turf. Falling really was no different then following on concrete. Course no pads and no helmet and guys got hurt all the time, but it was generally blown out knees and hell, we were 19/20 years old.

Remember, brain can move in the skull without the impact on turf. A very rapid change in direction can cause it. Even a violent hit to the stomach, which causes the head to jerk may lead to one.

If you want to know what the future looks like google the concussion protocols for various other professional sports organisations e.g. World Rugby and FIFA. All are very similar. All require players to miss time for a suspected consussion. The NFL is the odd one out, which is surprising given that concussion is common in football.

I think you mean "they" are not culpable. But I'm not so sure that's true either. They have a responsibility to safeguard the players, and keep them out of the game regardless of whether they want to be in or not. Especially with a concussion, a player might think he's fine, when he's far from it.

I doubt it. If you are that aware then you're not in a compromised mental state.

Roger Staubach retired at 37 because of multiple concussions and the danger it posed for his future. Had he not had those head injuries, I’m convinced he would have played 3 more seasons and maybe we win another SB. Troy Aikman also cited concussions when he retired at 35. Tony Dorsett is impaired today because of the multiple concussions he had during his career.

Saying this is leading to “flag football” is foolish to me. Without these concussion protocols and improved safety procedures, football would be doomed. These are human beings, not gladiators.

His annoucement when he retired: “I know it’s the right thing for me because of my health, concussions, my back problems that I’ve had. It took its toll, and I know that to try to go out there and play another year was going to be a tough thing to do.”


As I recall he was concussed by Lavar Arrington and never played again. I was watching that game when it happened.

It was the final concussion and final play of the Cowboy quarterback's illustrious career. Flag footballers might want to spend a little time researching what the lives of Mike Webster, Dave Duerson and Junior Seau were like before CTE contributed to them ending their lives. Seau shooting himself in the chest so they could have his brain to examine. I can only imagine what Junior's life was like before he decided to take that action.

Aikman and Young both said those blackouts they suffered in games have never cleared and I think Young has some hangover from that.

They have to be very careful with how they word the language. If it's carelessly broad like what's presented in the tweet, then anyone accidently tripping or getting off balance will result in them having to leave for nothing.

Let's please use our brains. You are worried about the potential for a false positive. Simply losing balance or tripping would have to be preceded by a blow to the head. Gee, not common at all. A guy has to miss time is the worst outcome.

A false negative could lead to brain damage.

But yeah, worry about wrongly keeping a player out occasionally. Seems reasonable
