It comes down to when you sign the QB. Hurts received a 5 yr extension meaning the total deal is 7 years and therefore that is why the first couple of years are so cheap. The Jones could have done that with Dak when he was up for an extension in his 3rd year but decided to play hard ball and it cost them. If I remember correctly at the time he wanted an $125 million extension which would have made it a 7 year deal (3rd and 4th year of original contract then 5 more years) instead he played out his contract then franchised for one year at something like $31 million then signed a 4 year $160 million deal. His total earning after the contract will be at around $194 million for 9 years.
$194 million is a lot but just over what Hurts is making on his total guarantees, $36 million less than Watson's guarantees and with Jackson, Burrows and Herbert contract probably done this summer which all will be far more than Dak's money.
Many fans aren't going to like it but sometime over the next 12 months, Jerry is going to have to extend Dak and the longer they wait the more it is going to cost. $160 million for 4 years is going to look cheap by then.
