People say “effort” but confuse that with stats. He was a 2 gapping NT playing in a 4 point stance he won’t rack up stats

The guy played 49 snaps a game against the best offenses for a great run defense for a no nonsense hard nosed coach like Harbaugh

I doubt effort is his issue
Cool! Wasn't a shot and respect your posts, just had read that a few time! Thanks, makes sense

They could have Musgrave over him too.

If you told me a team had a TE board something like this, I would not be surprised at all.
  1. Kincaid
  2. Washington
  3. Laporta
  4. Musgrave
  5. Kuntz
  6. Mayer
Mayer doesn't have any special traits, theres nothing to distinguish him from the Dalton Schultzes of the world, so there's no reason to take him early.
Buh buh buh Witten.

I don’t get the Mayer hate. Seems like prototype TE who can block and catch and just solid stud.
It’s because he had no business being a round 1 prospect especially when you look at past drafts and see better talents than him busting left and right.

Everyone remembers the TE they loved growing up and those guys just aren’t worth it in the new NFL.

I get it! I didn't want him in Rd 1 anyways. But I think guys like this are still worthwhile in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and the tape wasn't that bad to me. But I also hate ND so I didn't watch him much except for hype videos.

LOL. Did Mayer steal your lunch money or something?

The LaPorta thing is puzzling to me. Because if you are concerned Mayer plays slow, then that should be a concern with LaPorta. Watch him and Mayer. The same. Watch LaPorta and Kincaid. It's night and day different despite both having similar testing numbers. Washington is another that many here said was worthy of 26 and he's still sitting at home too.

That being said, at 58, I'd be fine with any of the remaining TEs.
Catch hates Mayer for some reason; I guess he just needed someone to hate. ANYONE rating La Porta over Mayer is a fool. So I really doubt the boys actually feel that way. And having watche La Porta a couple of times I have to agree that he does not play up to his measureables. He is a very good one and works hard, etc. But he just does not play big while Mayer has.

Who did not get chosen in the first either. You are so obsessed with Mayer I hope the boys trade up in the 2nd to get him just to watch you stroke out.
I don’t mind him in round 2.

That’s where I thought he should go. Round 2 or 3 since he’s such a bad athlete.

If Mayer went to, like, East Carolina, he'd be a 5th-round prospect. There is nothing special about his game.

Just goes to show how many here really did fail Football 101.
When 50 people tell you that you are drunk, its time to borrow a quarter and lay down in the gutter.
Right now I am at of change so I cannot lend you a quarter

There were several reasons I was high on Mayer while not really wanting to spend a 26 on him:
A true Lunch Pale player; gritty and tough and always on it
Makes the contested catch quite often and is a real threat in the end zone
Excellent blocker
But what most impressed me is that in three years he had three QBs; Book, Coan, Pyne. Book was very good; Coan meh; Pyne below average at best.
And yet his play got better and better and his stats steadily improved. Despite a declining quality of QB.

Is he fast? No. Is he big? No. Does he separate? No. Those are the only two things that matter for college TEs as it relates to pro production. He's a good player, but what he's going to give you in the NFL isn't worth a high draft pick.

I will say that Mayer is a "victim" of this draft class in terms of where he was projected to go. In previous years, with all of the other talent at more premium positions, nobody is talking about him as a first-round pick.

Or maybe I was right all along and people who thought he was a first rounder were wrong.

Or maybe there is a difference between thinking someone is a 1st round talent and someone actually being drafted in the 1st round. It’s these kinds of “I’m the smartest guy in the room” posts that make this board spiral.

Your right…my bad. I initially quoted another poster who was very vocally anti Gibbs but erased the quote part because I didn’t want to call out an individual.

I still stand by my point. There is some very selective chest thumping and holier than thou tones from some of the more vocal pre draft posters. I guess if you put out enough opinions, you will always find something to crow about.
