Probably not, but I'm positive there are a ton of people who would kill for those jobs. Finding committed replacements wouldn't be hard.
Which is why the NFL has no incentive to do it lol

Why add another 30% to your costs when you have just an unlimited labor force that will work as contractors, with no discernible difference in quality?

I'd be the best ref Cowboys fans could hope for seeing as a whole lot of folks around here say they "just want a fairly called game." Well, that's exactly what I'd give them. I'm sure I'd be well-liked 'round here for giving the people what they want, right?
All we ask for is just that, a fair called game. Well it is what I ask anyway.

Good thing. Tired of seeing refs who are obviously past the age their vision is optimal making close calls. There should be an age limit. Vision declines starting in your 40s. Everyone has vision decline by 60. No way should there be old fat white haired guys judging pass interference late in the game.
Amen.

The incentive is a better product on the field. Unfortunately we have proven we will watch regardless. So I agree, they won't change what they don't see as broken.

Absolutely no way are they adding 30% to their costs by having full time refs. Not a chance.

It amazes me this isn't already a thing. It's almost too incompetent to believe it's not intentional. Way too much money goes into the sport for reffing to be a side gig. Year round training and rotating through teams to teach would only make for a better product.
The NFL is the only professional sports league in the world that does not have full time officials.

Clearly deliberate.

They make big salaries
Sporting news reported they avg about 200k a year. That’s pretty good money for watching grown men play a game
And at the most you only have to work what 22 days out of the year and that's if you're on a playoff crew or selected as a super bowl official.

That's the problem, the NFL should be trying to upgrade and get better quality of officiating...not having a revolving door of crap. Every year it's the same old complaints on the officiating.....much like the border crisis. Never gets solved due to no guts or will.

The NFL has no reason to upgrade their officiating.

That's not an incentive to the league though, as you say.

Do you mean they aren't doing that, or that 30% is wrong? 30% is the standard metric of a full-time employee vs. contractor.

I mean 30% of costs. I would happily concede 30% of their payroll. The way I read it, was in regards to overall costs. My point, whatever the payroll increase is it's a drop in an 18 billion dollar bucket.

Really
They do have a blockout time I think from start of camp till end of season they aren’t allowed to work but many have their own businesses so not a big deal. It’s a pretty nice gig though it is harder than some fans think. Things happen so fast and every decision is scrutinized over and over on replay. I’m sure refs have always missed calls but there is so many cameras and scrutiny now. My biggest beef is when they screw up a rule or don’t fix their mistakes on replay sometimes. But it is a really tough job

I would be cool with XFL's universal challenge system. You get one challenge per game, but it can challenge anything. Any call, non call, spot, turnover, penalty, you name it. I'd keep it in my back pocket till the last drive where Dallas almost always gets hosed beyond recovery either by an egregious no call, or a phantom call. The refs could screw us again on the replay, but it would be so much more blatant that it could lead to reform.

Plus most have careers/jobs that not only pay well -but allows tme flexibility\leeway in traveling to game sites.
It’s a great gig. I wouldn’t want the job because they are human and they are gonna miss calls but today it’s really exposed when they miss a call. All in all I think they do a decent job considering. The league itself creates a lot of the issues I seen last year with just crazy roughing the passer calls.

This is not a problem for the NFL. 12 is easy to replace.

It is a big problem in youth sports, though. It is very hard to find refs for soccer, lacrosse, hoops, and (umps) baseball. Psycho parents have made it very difficult to be a ref today. It’s starting to be felt in HS as well.

I can't agree with the idea that the NFL refs do a good job. I just finished the XFL and it was far superior referee wise. They won't call ticky tack and phantom stuff there.
