Weird that DQ could wiff so badly on Joseph and Wright early in the draft but strike gold with Bland and Scott much later.

I think with Joseph, they underestimated how stupid he is. They thought they could coach up his physical gifts, but didn't count on his football IQ being as low as it is. Those things happen.

With Wright, Bland and Scott, they were looking at Richard Sherman-esque players. Taller corners who could physically dominate receivers, making it difficult for them to get and out of their routes, at least not before the pressure gets home. Wright plays more like a smaller corner, more mirroring than manhandling. His handfighting is less effective than they probably hoped it would be. I think they hoped as he gained weight and strength that it would get better.

The draft is a crapshoot, so sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss.

That didn't look like holding to me. It looked like typical physical coverage you see every game in the NFL.

That move on Diggs is his weakness.

I did think the holding call seemed ticky-tack. He did it, but it was brief and didn't seem to really impede the receiver.

Cornerback is not an easy position to evaluate. Joseph has great feet and athletic ability. The problem is he does not have any awareness and I agree with you about the football IQ. I would like to know why the scouts liked him more than Samuel Jr. who was better in college, father played cornerback in the NFL, better reputation, and was probably only a inch shorter and a tick slower in the forty.

I think it's IQ. He has the speed and movement skills to stay with practically any receiver, but he bites on their fakes, he lines up on the wrong shoulder, etc. It's an intelligence issue, not a skill issue.

I think they saw Samuel as just a zone corner who would be prohibited from doing some of the things we ask because of his lack of length. Quinn has a type and they were looking for that type. It's kind of like those complaining about us not drafting Torrence. He may go on to a great career as a guard, but we seem to prefer drafting tackles and moving them to guard because of the greater movement skills. I'm not a fan of that because I just prefer taking the better player and adapting your scheme to the talent, but there is some legitmacy to scheme fit.

I'm certainly not going to fuss about Quinn having a type because despite those misses, he definitely has mostly improved our defense. Of course, the luck of having Parsons fall into our laps when we were looking to take either of the top two corners has a lot to do with that.

And that could be their last-ditch effort if he fails at corner again this year. Trouble is, if I'm questioning his football IQ as a corner, I sure don't trust it as a safety.

Yeah I think it’s a movement thing for me but I mean I honestly think he could replace Goodwin if he keeps performing well on special teams. Too many guys in front of him to sniff safety and probably corner too.

Well, considering that Goodwin is nothing but a special-teammer, that's possible. But I think Goodwin is a smart player with poor corner skills, so he makes good special-teams coverage decisions. I think Joseph is a dumb player with potentially very good corner skills, so he makes dumb special-teams coverage decisions even though he has the ability there to be outstanding.

I am probably on an island alone with this take but I think our defense would just be as devastating with Surtain as it is with Parsons. Surtain and Diggs would have been scary hours.

I think having a premier pass rusher is far more beneficial than having a premier corner. Not saying you don't want both, but defense success starts with the pass rush.

If Scott works out, finding later round corner gems starting to be another McClay calling card. Although I'm willing to bet if you added up years of position picking, probably see a lot of defensive backs. Bound to get some right.

He had two fair catch interference penalties and an unnecessary roughness. He also had a couple of illegal blocks, but I don't count those necessarily as stupid penalties.
