This coaching staff couldn't coach up Will Grier who has similar physical talents. What makes anyone believe they will be able to coach up Trey Lance?
Grier clearly does not have the mental aptitude needed. I don't know if that is clear with Lance at this time. Could turn out the same, but they are taking the chance that it won't. It's a relatively low-cost risk.

I think you gamble with every pick to an extent so the misses don't bother me. Obviously, the gamble is a lot less risky at the top of the draft, but there are misses (like Lance) in every round.

Look at a draft like 2020 for us. Lamb and Diggs were great picks, and Biadasz has turned into a starter, but we clearly missed on three other picks (Robinson, Anae and Dinucci) and haven't gotten a lot out of a fourth (Gallimore). So we missed on more than half of our draft picks. That's just an example, but it's fairly typical. 2019 3 out of 8. 2018 may have been one of our better year with 6 of 9 contributing, but Williams wasn't a second-contract hit in the second round .. and 2017 made up for that success with the failure of Charlton and most of that class; only four of 9 were contributors. Even the supposed great class of 2015 really only landed us three long-term players (Elliott, Prescott and Brown). Collins wasn't a second-contract pick and Jaylon Smith didn't play up to his second contract.

I liked Parcells' attitude that essentially you win some and you lose some and finding an undrafted contributor makes up some for the losses. Obviously, we'd like the team to hit on every pick, but it just isn't reality.
I agree 100%. If this is a miss for us but we hit with Ashim or the TE that just tore his ACL, or Deuce is the next Sproles then it all comes out even.

Sorry but the UDFA is not the same level of prospect. MM has taken players like Gannon Grbac Brooks and Rodgers and done a whole heck of a lot with them.

I'd rather have the fourth round pick that could potentially turn into somebody like Pollard or Schultz or Ferguson.
I am happy you have an argument that works for you but that as not the discussion.

If you think you can get better QB prospects than Lance with a 4th rounder then go for it.

You have to have a certain amount of ability to stay calm under pressure in the NFL. The lack of that is Grier's biggest issue IMO. Rush doesn't have the same level of arm talent or athletic ability but he is cool under pressure.

jerry should have used a 2nd round pick on him. Isn't that the round Jerry lets the grandkids pick a player? smh,

Don't post anything positive in this thread or your privileges will be revoked. or is that just in highlighted threads? hum

True. It's as much a mind game as a physical one; actually more so. I've never seen a QB succeed on just physical talent, but I've seen some pretty heady ones overcome physical shortcomings.

If they developing him into a pro bowl quarterback then we got our guy after Dak is gone. If not then you will have to find him somewhere in the draft in the future.

LOL....so funny seeing all these Dak jock sniffers getting bent out of shape. I mean, you could almost say they feel threatened even by his existence on the roster. Just a minute ago they were all bashing on Grier. Wonder if that's how Dak feels too.

What a predictable bunch.

I don't know what Trey's long term status is with the Cowboys, but there is no way that we won't give Dak a new contract.

Really…. If Lance becomes the next starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys he would be worth 3 number 1s. If he is just a solid backup for two seasons he would be worth 1 first round pick. 4th round draft picks are easy to acquire. 23 year old quarterbacks with talent are not.

Huh? Categories can make understanding complex issues easier but they can also make you stupid.

Exactly, this was a good move. It's a chance to reset the contract clock on QB if he wants to do that. If nothing else, the Cowboys now have a lot of cap flexibility.
-A fourth rounder can easily be recouped by a simple deal down in the second round.

-It makes Dak slightly less comfortable, which is a change, and possibly a great thing.

-I’d like to hope we just bought our nemesis’ playbook, but don’t think that’ll amount to much lol.

-They could decide to keep TL active instead of an extra ST guy and insert some RPO packages for him under certain scenarios. This is my greatest realistic hope.

-Rush will of course replace Dak if he needs to miss a series, or a game or five, but if (I don’t like even saying it but most of us are grown ups, yes?) this season goes by way of 2020, they can get Trey in there and there’s a real reason to watch.

-Overall I’m just surprised they did this. It’s very anti Jerry. He doesn’t like to offend his fake friends (players) with competition. It leads to complacency and contempt but Jerry wanted it all his way.

-The risk/reward here is an off the charts win for us IMO when you consider that we are hoping he never sees the field any time soon. Not that Dak doesn’t work hard, but hopefully all this does is inspire him to take things up a notch. Well worth a fourth if so. If not, it was still worth the shot.

Yeah, Dak is threatened by a 3rd string QB who made Kyle Shanahan throw in the towel.
