Tyler Smith I thought was solid as a rookie at LT, did have some penalties, but we knew that was going to happen. The coaches felt confident in Tyler to leave him at LT when Tyron came back from injury...I'm sure they still feel that Tyler can play LT at a high level. Year two, he was tremendous and going into year three he will be most confident lineman not named Zack. So, moving him back to LT really shouldn't be an issue.
So, for fun let's say we end up selecting Barton in the 1st and then have the opportunity to pick Frasier in the 2nd? Now, we are talking about having a powerful OL...how would you feel about that scenario? Even if the scenario presented itself, I'm sure the Braintrust would pass and look at another unit to add to.
LT Tyler Smith, LG Barton, C Frasier, RG Martin, RT Steele
I'm sure Frazier will be off the board before we pick in the 2nd, but the draft is funny, and we see players slide every year for numerous reasons.
I feel like we’d be starting 2 rookies on an OL for a team that was a contender last year and we’re going backwards.

You’re also assuming Tyler will be as good at LT as he was at LG which I’m not sure he will be. He struggled at LT as a rook and led the league in penalties.

For a team that is “all in” this would be a horrific approach IMO.

You have a good point. I like that offensive line, (Hoffman at center) and improve the defensive line where we don’t have serviceable players starting. Let’s be real except for Parsons and Tank we are below average in our front 7. It’s time for certain players to earn their money, you can’t have all pros at every position when you pay your quarterback.
You take that O-line.....pair it with Derrick Henry...and Jaylin Wright...You might be cooking with gas.

Don't think so....

LT- Tyler Smith
LG- Bass
C-Barton....1st round after trade down
RG-Martin
RT- Steele
This OL would be the least of our worries. I’m all good with this if this is how it plays out.

Starting two rookies on the OL would have some growing pains, but we are talking about two legitimate high level starting rookies too...at least it's not a rookie at LT. There's a chance we will have two rookies regardless on the OL...LT , C .
When it comes to Tyler Smith, he was drafted to replace Tyron and I think the coaches still feel that that's still the case.

Rookies usually struggle in year 1 even early selections. It would be foolishly arrogant for the front office to be confident about going into the year with 2 rookies starting thinking they’ll go further than they did last year.

Tyler has always been best suited to play G IMO and we just saw him earn all pro. Maybe they do kick him out but your just adding even more risk to the situation bc we don’t know how good he’ll be out there.

I'm lost, I thought Smith played well for a rookie at LT. Like pretty well. Sure there were some penalties, but again, rookie. Should he have been perfect? I'm not sure how the narrative got to where it is. Maybe I'm wrong in my observations.

Couple that with they now need to address Center and LT, versus, possibly only Center.

Maybe I'm looking at this wrong.

I don’t think it’s possible to lead the league in penalties and play well. Very admirable for filling in for Tyron and being tough but saying he played anything above mediocre is wild to me.

Yes, most rookies usually struggle and for people to call Mazi a bust after his rookie season is just stupid. But, as where this team sits who knows what direction is coming. Are we thinking about not restructuring Dak and move on after next season? Are we going to start a minor rebuild or just patch the holes and end up financially strapped? Not resigning Tyron and the rumor with Dak kind of opens up the idea of the begging of a rebuild. It's not like we have to totally destroy the foundation. We have some good young core players. The question is where do you start?

If you’re going to rebuild blow it up. As long as Dak is the QB we’re going to be good enough to win enough games to not be picking top 10.

All goes back to Jerry. Refuses to actually go all in and too stubborn to do what’s necessary for a real rebuild.

IMO they were bringing back Tyron and Biadasz. They bring back Tyler for 6-7 per year

Agree but then this team still has no LB or RBs. This team has too many holes to fill that the draft can fill. And the cap is too little to fill them also.
Unless you extend Prescott, the team can do much in FA either or do what this franchise does best--- SHOP AT DOLLAR GENERAL
would not say this franchise does it BEST: more like most often
use our later picks to move up into the 3rd to get someone decent; I hope we plug the LB and RB holes in FA but I am a hopeless optimistic,,,

I think its a matter of projection. Dude prepped to be a guard all offseason than had to play LT in place of Tyron right before the season started. I feel like experience and an offseason dedicated to the postion would project well and leave us with more options in the offseason. I probably (ignorantly) think players can learn to be more disciplined in terms of earning flags. I feel like the technique was there to be successful.

But he played LT in college…it’s not like we were asking him to play something foreign to him.

Regardless we know we have an all pro LG and we’re talking about projection for LT? Trying to reduce risks if we’re all in.

That's not necessarily true. I mean, what we see are the penalties and not what the coaches see on film about his positive plays. You are also comparing his rookie year at LT to his 2nd year at LG and then saying it would be a mistake to trust him to improve in his 3rd year if pushed back out. It would be different if we saw him play some LT last year and be able to make a proper comparison.

Yea, I’d strongly disagree there on the penalties. Penalties usually occur when you get beat and have to recover or you’re trying to get a head start on the play and false start.

Sure - maybe he can improve at LT but we already know we have an elite LG. I don’t understand why we would mess with him like that. Just leave him alone and enjoy an All Pro on a rookie contract.

Maybe I (ignorantly) think an offseason in an NFL program holds way too much weight. But, point being, a rookie practicing an entire offseason to play one position having to switch over last minute to play another position , can be problematic.
Also, Penalties:
2022Dallas1185401569
2023Dallas1080121349

Year-to-year penalties are quite similar with 11 and 10 respectively.

Maybe I have too much expectation of professional athletes and their ability to get better year to year, especailly in their early years.

I def see the worry moving an all-pro from LG to LT, but I do think he is more than capable of succeeding if he was pushed to do-so.

I guess I say all this to to point out, I don't think we are pigeon-holed into drafting a LT in the first. I do see the concerns not doing so.

Smith having to adjust to the speed of the game during his rookie season was an issue, especially the first half of the year, But, as the season went along, he was flagged less.
One of two things will probably happen...we draft OT in the first or Tyler is moved to LT. I'm fine with either...but if that draft pick is Barton or Fautanu you know Tyler will be moved out to LT.
