Let's say they just don't extend his contract but don't release him either. Wouldn't he then just become an UFA and we wouldn't take a cap hit in 2025? If yes, why not follow this route?
We used the so called "void years" possibility to "extend" his contract so we were able to distribute his pro rated bonuses to more years. Its not that he actually has a longer contract that forces him to play for us. Right now he will be a FA in 2025.

He is in our books with 40 mils in 2025 because of that. We cant do anything against those 40 mils. Its money that was already handed to him so we have to count that against our cap.

The idea of extending him is that you can now renegotiate his base salary in 2024 and also have a low base salary in 2025. So that in 2024 and 2025 our cap hits (together with the already high numbers i mentioned because of the paid bonuses) will be easier to handle.
So with an extension you have a lot of dead money bound but at least you have a QB on your roster. If you cut him or dont extend him you will have 40 mils in dead money and no QB.

keep seeing all these scenarios of his contract going forward.......can he just play out this year on his current contract and than we we can assess if we want to extend him or...are we stuck extending him or face cap hell?.......please explain
Yep..... we've now (POST DRAFT) moved forward. Pretty much, the only team that would 'trade' for Dak in 2024 (taking into account: need, position to compete) is the RAIDERS. Even that would take many moving parts:
- the Raiders need to be interested
- we'd need to threaten that we'd Post-June cut him (where Dak potentially loses $29m)
- Dak wants to play his contract year out in a new Offense.
NOT HAPPENING....in part because I dont think Dak will Sign and Extend, he'll want to hit Free Agency (to maximize earnings).

So the next step is ......does Jerry want a modicum of control of proceedings as having Dak 'in-house' in 2024, or does he prefer pocketing the $29m cash.

We can also, presumably take two teams out of contention for landing spots for Dak in 2025......with the BRONCO's and VIKING's overslotting to take lesser QB's in 1st Rd of Draft (unless they employ as Fontenot as GM).

Then what is it?
What about the players that don't make either team?????
As i already wrote he was/is second team All Pro. That is not All Pro. All Pro players are the best players at their position. In 2023 that was Lamar Jackson

And to those other players: They are also not All Pro

An example, maybe easier to understand:

-> 1+1.5=2.5: It is not 2 even if the first number is 2.
-> 2.5 does not become magically 2 just because all other numbers arent 2 also.

:huh:He can't until his current contract ends which is in March 2025. At the time, Jerry has two options, reach an agreement or Dak will test the open market. It's pretty simple V.........
Or Jerry can save himself $29m by cutting him (Post June). If he could find about $10m (by restructuring other's: Diggs / Steele), he could cut Dak now and take the full CAP this year, and use this year as a proper reset. Leaving us with a very decent available CAP amount going into 2025.

As of now Dak has 100% leverage........he's a free agent next March and there isn't damn thing Jerry can do about it other than pay him what he wants. Otherwise, he will walk.....So he will decide whether or not the Cowboys extend him not the other way around.

That's the cold reality Jerry has backed himself into with Dak's contract..........
To me there'd be no leverage. You didn't hold up your part of the bargain with winning in the playoffs so bye bye. Have fun joining another team. But with Jerry who knows he'll probably cave.

The leverage has now moved back to the team. Keeing him on the roster until final cuts is now the most economical move. But the worst for Dak as he wont have a chance to win a job elsewhere in training camp if e.g. a June 1st cut.

Cowboys could threaten to cut him in final cuts unless he halves his basic salary for 2024. By then no other team will have the money to pay him anything substantial in 2024 if he is cut.

. All Pro players are the best players at their position.
To say a 2nd team ALL-Pro player "is not" an ALL-Pro is not true .........it's not.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_All-Pro_Team

All-Pro is an honor bestowed upon professional American football players that designates the best player at each position during a given season

The 2023 All-Pro teams were named by the Associated Press (AP),[1] Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA), and The Sporting News (TSN) for performance in the 2023 NFL season. Any player selected to the first-team of any of the teams can be described as an "All-Pro." The AP team, with first-team and second-team selections, was chosen by a national panel of fifty NFL writers and broadcasters. The Sporting News All-NFL team was voted on by NFL players and executives. The PFWA team is selected by its more than 300 national members who are accredited media members covering the NFL.

Yep, that'll save Jerry $29m cash (but a bit late to effect free agency improvements). A more dynamic statement is to Pre-Cut and take the full $66M cap hit, in 2024 (will only take $1m in restructures.....maybe Diggs/Steele). This will give enough to extend CeeDee, Micah and money left over and we'll have seen Lance for a year (and Jerry's happy as he's 'saved' $29m). If Lance fails, we get a great draft position.

Everyone's happy,......even Pro-Dak as we'll be in a much better place to sign him in 2025 (if Lance doesnt work out).

Its a win/win/win. Short term pain. long term gain.

.indeed Dak has to work out if location plays a part in what he wants
Why......he can just wait until the end of the season when he becomes a free agent. The only leverage Jerry has is to bench Dak if he refuses to waive the no-trade clause and make him inactive for 17 games but he will lose the team.

Lets start again....we're discussing Jerry's leverage. He holds some in that there's the distinct possibility that Dak wants/needs the Cowboys. Without being the Cowboys QB he doesnt get the national publicity and will lose out on commercially. He's in danger of slipping down the Cousins Route.

You are speaking about THIS season.......I an speaking about Jerry and Stephen's desire to sign him to an extension or keep him on the team. Threat to cut him?????? France and Dak would beg for it........at least 2-4 teams would give Dak his contract in a heartbeat.

Remember the leverage is about their desire to retain his service......if they no longer want it then stop neg and let him walk. But that's not the case here...
