As former Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells famously once said, “You are what your record says you are.” The Cowboys are 5-7, 3rd in the NFC East and by a thread still mathematically in the playoff race, but they have a putrid -91 point differential. I’m not one who sees this team as anything beyond a below average team. And the team‘s stats bear that out.

As we all know, stats can tell us a lot but can also mislead. But looking at the Cowboys through 12 games, these team stats seem to be a fairly accurate tale of what this team is. Here are the offensive and defensive TEAM stats and how they rank in the NFL this year:

OFFENSE
  • Total yards per game: 322 yards per game. Ranked 22nd.
  • Total points per game: 20.7 Ppg. Ranked 21st.
  • Passing yards per game: 236 yards per game. Ranked 12th.
  • Rushing yards per game: 86 yards per game. Ranked 31st.
  • 3rd down conversions: 35.44%. Ranked 24th.
  • Time of possession: 28:48. Ranked 29th.
  • Turnover differential: -7. Ranked 27th.
  • Point differential: -91. Ranked 27th.
DEFENSE
  • Total yards per game: 360 yards per game. Ranked 26th.
  • Total allowed points per game: 28.3 ppg. Ranked 29th.
  • Passing yards per game: 212 yards per game. Ranked 13th.
  • Rushing yards per game: 148 yards per game. Ranked 31st.
  • 3rd down conversion rate: 34.88 %. Ranked 6th. (Surprising. But it also shows that teams are making big plays on 1st and 2nd down)
  • Time of possession: 31:12. Ranked 29th.
  • Interceptions: 9. Ranked 12th.
  • Sacks: 33. Ranked 10th.
It’s fairly clear this is a team with problems on both sides of the ball. But it is also more accurate to say this team’s defense (when healthy) is better than the offense. And while the defense STILL has major problems stopping the run, its sack and interception numbers are above average. To me the message is clear: This offense is really bad. Averaging 20 points a game will get you beat most of the time.

Yes Mike McCarthy solely responsible as a head coach and an offensive coordinator for the offensive woes around here you literally cannot use injuries up until recently to say that he misused Rico and hunter overused Vaughn and Elliott didn't use Turpin when we really needed some juice I mean you got cooks out you don't have anybody else stepping up at wide receiver and you don't try to at least use Turpin like downfield in space?!!!

Mike Zimmer has an excuse you're right I mean we had 18 injuries most of it was all at 2 positions on defense and then scattered around on defense it literally hard to run a brand new defense out on the field let alone when it just got hole shot all over it so he's trying to adjust to one off season of making a total switch at defensive coordinator in on defense and then have all those injuries from day one when you lose bland before the season starts and Sam Williams which was gonna be your makeup depth most likely for Armstrong or Fowler and you lose both of them before you play one game and then it just was dominoes from there every week more guys going down....

So one has an excuse and the other doesn't..

Before anyone chimes in with the injury excuse, what were the rankings before the injuries started piling up? My guess is they were very similar, maybe even worse.
I will counter and say that the offense probably had better passing stats ....... from garbage time gains. Hey-yo!

Using injuries as an excuse is a habit for losers.
Not really that's not an excuse those are facts app absolutely you are on the wrong side of this argument they're not trying to make excuses but the reason we have been worse the reasons we could have been better was because of injuries therefore it's not an excuse it's a fact it's a statement of fact the Dallas Cowboys would have been better had they not had all these injuries the San Francisco 49ers would have been better this year had it not been for major injuries if you can't say that without it sounded like an excuse that's on you literally it's the real reasons why teams struggle is when they lose not only their starters but they lose the depth behind those starters it's impossible in any sport to make up for that there's no way to do it especially in football with a hard cap you might be able to cover that up in baseball because you can buy so muchlike LA and NY do but no one's trying to make excuses they're stating facts the Cowboys season was derailed in 2020 why a rash of injuries it's called attrition when you're losing a lot of your best players and their backups it's hard to function as a coaching staff you literally are asking third string players to play against first stringers when you go into games and that is not an excuse that is an almost an impossibility you can occasionally step up like we did in the Washington game but on a consistent basis you're going to lose when you lose that many players this isn't losing one or two players this is losing like 18 different players some of them multiple times and some for multiple weeks it happens and few Out for the season.

Whenever someone brings it up and you come back with oh you can't say it's an excuse no we're going to say it's a statement of fact literally teams do not get better when they lose their starters that's a fact a handful of starters you might be able to cover that up but you aren't covering up what's happened to the Cowboys which is far worse than I think anybody in the league right now if you count every player and what they meant to this team I mean I know San Francisco has lost quite a few but most of the teams right now that are upright and considered the top teams they're also winning attrition...

No that's not a habit for losers we're talking about having a valid reason of why you're losing more than you're winning is when you have to battle attrition to a point the Cowboys had to into another extent I don't follow the rest of the NFL but I know San Francisco is going through a similar thing and they have a better coaching staff a better GMA better organization apparently better players that's supposed to have more depth than they can't get past it they went from Super Bowl contenders to last in their division and in that division that's pretty sad..

You're right you can overcome some positions lost and there's no reason to use it as a sole excuse but it is a statement of fact is when you lose this many players at so many important positions there's no amount of depth that's gonna help you win on a regular basis so when you lose you can point to facts that injuries played a huge factor and I'm sorry that sounds like an excuse to you but most teams will lose this many players don't have a very good season...

Well, we started out the season down one All-Pro cornerback and a pass rusher we were counting on, so it wasn't like we ever were fully healthy. We bandaged that corner spot with a late-round rookie, which was asking a lot.

We also started off the year in a new defensive system, and it can take many weeks for players to settle into that system instead of overthinking. It's hard to say if we're seeing that now (especially after the Giants game, since that's a bad offense), but it would be nice if we could get everyone back out there on defense and see how it looks with the personnel we are supposed to have. We certainly can't expect a defense playing with a rotation of bodies at starting corner to be as good as having both Bland and Diggs out there. Then, there's whatever effect Lawrence might have.

I'm not saying Zimmer's defense is anything great or that I want to keep him, but it's been shorthanded from the start, which makes it difficult to judge.

Stay away from service, giving up due to being unfairly challenged is cowardice. Fact...they don't quit.
Change and forged in fire is developing.

3 - 12 win seasons and this team's starters mostly returning now.

Join the ASPCA, they love 'dogs,'

Congratulations: you have now replaced Rambo as the #1 homer on this board
and its just as ridiculous

The injuries started before the season started. And has not stopped.
Still not an excuse. Just pointing out that you are off on your suggestion. IMO.
