The Dallas Cowboys have a long list of unrestricted free agents who will officially hit the open market in a little less than two months. Of those, six or seven were significant contributors in 2024, meaning the Cowboys have some difficult decisions ahead of them in the coming weeks.

Today’s free agent profile series examines a player who wasn’t one of those significant contributors because he barely saw the field last season. That would be quarterback Trey Lance.

Year Review: Trey Lance’s 2024 season with the Dallas Cowboys was characterized by limited opportunities and mixed performances. The 24-year-old quarterback, who the Cowboys acquired in August of 2023, spent nearly the entirety of the regular season as Dallas’ third-string quarterback.

I just dont understand him staying in Dallas unless he has zero market elsewhere and returns as a 3rd qb. He requires a completely different offense than Dak will run which is a horrible thing to have as a back up QB. I'm a Lance fan, but his time in Dallas should be over given the direction the Cowboys have gone.

If he likes the coach, he will stay.

I'm not sure why the Cowboys would want him back though? Hes going to be best suited in an offense that runs a lot of read options and RPOs. That isn't what Schottenheimer is going to install this offseason, and ideally you would want your backup to be a guy who comes in and runs the exact offense as your starter without missing a beat. As much as I like Lance, he should really go to a team like Washington, Baltimore, or Indy who already run offenses that align with his talents. He would be an excellent addition to battle for a backup gig in those organizations, and will probably feel more comfortable in the offense.

I agree, Trey should probably look to be in a RPO heavy offense.

He's among one of the free agents this season well dang who didn't know that

Either bring him or Cooper back but don’t spend $ on both . Mid rounds draft someone who can actually be a back up and in 26 your comfortable playing if injury or lousy play by the starter happens . Perhaps the Syracuse or Ole Miss QB’s .

Keep the young buck...he knows the game, he is learning from Prescott when he goes down at some point.

Throw him another 50 mil a season, why not?

Every other player on the team will be undrafted rookie free agents

Dak and Trey can be part of a new reality series........."SURVIVAL: Dallas Cowboys Edition"
