"Martyball" and the passage of time

That wasn't what I quoted. I quoted "Marty was a great coach!" which he never was.

Good coach, above average head coach, top head coach, whatever. Great head coach? No. Not with a playoff record of 5-13 and no Lombardi's.
Yeah I would call him a good coach. I remember respecting him as a coach. I just can’t remember if he ran into bad luck in the playoffs or what. Kind of like that bills coach. Good coach who ran into nfc machines in the SB.

I noticed a lot of my fellow Zoners gleefully talking about how many of our problems will be solved because we have "Martyball" now. As someone who was around during "Martyball"it's interesting because back then Marty came to be known as basically a simpleton who was famous for soul crushing losses and who couldn't get over the top, e.g., he's the only coach in NFL history with 200 wins but a losing playoff record (and his playoff record STUNK). He was also on the losing end of iconic playoff losses, e.g., "The Drive", "The Fumble."
I'm curious what it is about Martyball that has people excited? Let me know Zoners.
Lived in denver during much of Marty’s coaching days, and certainly elway and thr broncos had his number in Cleveland and KC . but he had tough squads and playoff appearances regularly with a very limited budget especially at Cleveland . Hopefully his son has learned a few lessons.

I'm willing to let every person be there own man and not have to be a reflection of the father

However we do see examples otherwise such as Jerry and Stephen and Deion and Shadeur but only in like minded thinking....not ability

He is not likely to succeed….and that has little to do with his ability. No he didn’t achieve greatness as an OC, but could be a leader of men…just isn’t gonna be here.

He doesn’t have the horses and this FO has no idea how to provide them. Be honest, it’s about having the players.

Good for him personally. He will earn a HC salary, albeit likely at the lowest in the league (has that even been made public yet?) while literally no other team was after him.

His hire was about Jerry thinking there was no way MM would give him the middle finger and not wanting the QB hill he is going to die on to have to learn a new offense.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Teams get beat in the playoffs, and you need to look at who they lost to
to understand it.
In 97 he with KC, lost to Denver and Elway who then beat GB and farve in SB.

Sometimes the bad luck is who a team has to play in playoffs.
Poor Buffalo had the bad luck to wind up playing 3 great NFCE teams, Dallas twice, and before that
NYG with parcells and Bellichek, and the wash blanks. who were hot that year.

Marty had a lot of bad luck in playoffs, but that has nothing to do with his kid lol.

Thanks for the memories. People are so excited for something that became hated long ago. Should be fun season to watch especially with the tough schedule.

I can see it now. The Cowboys struggle to run against a bunch of good teams in the beginning of the season and than they play the Giants and people declare the problem fixed it just took time to learn the scheme.

Giants had a good draft and improving as we speak ! They will take some time but wont be push overs for long .

Nah. It's just harder to overcome talent shortcomings consistently in the playoffs.

If the idiot DB in SD would have played more "conservatively" when he made the interception, Brady and the Pats would have at least one less Superbowl, and Marty may have multiple SB wins.
It can obviously be an either/or situation. I am old enough to remember all of those seasons where Marty had the better team but became ultra conservative and choked those games off.

You will never convince me that some of those Chiefs teams that choked in the playoffs were not the better team.

I hear ya! I was using that as an example but I hope the Giants close the gap big-time with a QB and Carter.

They were in some instances, yes. That will happen at times.

But a lot of the losses, you could argue they weren't conservative enough.

13-3 loss against the Colts - They were running well, but threw more, with 3 ints, and 3 missed FGs when it was super cold. Being conservative didn't lose that game.
13-3 loss to Denver (who won the SB) - They threw it way more than they ran (and were actually more efficient than Denver/Elway when passing). But, when they did run, it was awful. That wasn't too conservative.
9-7 Loss at Miami (probably not the better team here) - They threw it 37 times for over 300 yds, and ran it only 21 times. Again, not conservative.
11-5 loss at Buffalo (buffalo was just better, and Montana got knocked out early) - Threw it 52 times to 20 rushes. Not conservative.
10-6 Loss at SD (SD was the better team) - 34 passes to 19 runs - none of which worked. Not conservative.
10-6 loss at Buffalo (Again Buffalo was the better team) - 29 passes to 24 - they were completely outmatched. Nothing to do with conservatism.
10-6 loss at Miami (Yet again, Miami was the better team) - 30 passes to 24 - almost pulled this one out, but failed in the 4th qtr - defense gave up 2 TDs, and they missed a last second FG.

So, really, only 2 of the KC losses in the playoffs could be considered against lesser teams (and calling Denver lesser is REALLY iffy), and it wasn't too much conservative play that was the issue..It was the same for the one other playoff game I looked at for SD - Brees had over 300 yards, and they threw it a lot.

Not really a lot of choking.
