Depth Chart, where things stand at OT

Im
Not trying to make a hot take, but moving Guyton back to the right side (his college position) and letting Asim play LT might be better than Guyton at LT and Steele at RT

Guyton has arm/hand size, agility, size in height and girth, and foot quickness. He'll learn anticipation and adjustments. He is a strong player that will grow.

Wherever Adams has coached, offensive lines have improved—often dramatically.

  • Arizona Cardinals (2023-2024): As the offensive line coach, Adams helped a depleted Cardinals line finish top-12 in rushing efficiency, despite multiple injuries and a rotating cast of starters.
  • Indianapolis Colts (2022): Working as an assistant offensive line coach, Adams contributed to a unit that ranked in the top 10 in run-block win rate and helped Jonathan Taylor to a Pro Bowl season.
  • Colorado & Arizona State (2018-2021): Adams coached offensive lines that produced multiple All-Pac 12 selections and helped their teams rank in the top 3 in rushing offense within the conference.
  • Boise State (2017): His unit allowed the fewest sacks in the Mountain West Conference and anchored a top-25 rushing offense.

At every stop, Adams emphasized technique, aggression, and player empowerment—qualities that suit Tyler Guyton’s raw athletic profile.

Over the next few weeks, the DC writers will discuss depth chart for the position groups.

Yes, players have been discussed many times already. But this will be from the writers with possiblysome different takes, and catches thoughts. As the team added over 30 players to the roster this off-season.

BS said the best 5 will start, as all coaches say that anyway.
First up, the OT's
I'm way more confident that the offensive line will gel quicker than the defensive line.

The FO has had much better sucess with offensive lines through the draft so I dont have a reason to think or say otherwise......its been the one area that I haven't wanted them to address through a high level of free agency.

imo if Guyton doesn't improve we are screwed, our only 2 options is Asim Richard's who is also untested or the nuclear option of moving Tyler Smith to LT.

The OT position has me a bit worried. Your 2 best are Guyton and Steele with unproven guys behind them. This is a big IF the Cowboys have to hit on if they want to go deep in the playoffs.

  • Terence Steele
  • Tyler Guyton
  • Asim Richards
  • Matt Waletzko
  • Hakeem Adeniji
  • Ajani Cornelius
Scary.

Schotty has zero authority to bench or move Guyton. Right or wrong, Jerry will make that decision. There's no way Jerry will give up on him at LT after only 1 year.

Now, Brian Schottenheimer has said numerous times this offseason that the five best offensive linemen will start
Barring injury Guyton and Steele will be the tackles. I did think Richard played solid in the snaps he got last year. But the first rnd pick is starting the season at LT

He was not a top 10 left tackle. He was a top 10 guard his second season though. Donald was the only end that got the best of him either. He saved the Cowboys season no doubt but let’s not overstate him. Tyler was average left tackle at best.
Fans remember the penalties more than anything but forget smith had a lot of penalties at tackle too. LT in the nfl is a tough position and switching from RT to LT isn’t easy. The footwork is different. Guyton issue was most strength and technique. Hopefully both have improved

i dunno anything of Hakeem Adeniji & Ajani Cornelius,

Asim richard i do but how committed is he to perfect the OT role ?

Rumors has it he has a preference to play inside at OG instead.

Guyton can make a leap or become more of a bust. We will have to wait and see.

As for Steele. I dont have hope that he turns it around. He was always bad in Pass Pro to begin with.
Guyton won't bust. He is too talented. And one big thing both him and Steele have going for them this year is coaching. The upgrade of OL coaching can't be understated.

If Guyton doesnt make a leap, OT could derail the season. Maybe Guyton makes a jump, but you keep saying he will with utter assurance. That ia a complete article of faith. There are red flags that popped up that you ignore
I saw the red flags and everything is correctable and will be.
  • Better coaching - a lot better
  • A full off season to learn and get stronger
  • A year of experience on the left side
It's almost impossible for him not be be better and a lot better. We knew he would struggle last year. He wasn't expected to come in polished and ready to go. This year will be radically different.

Those arent the red flags Im talking about. The red flags are his practice habits and the fact he got benched when he was healthy. Its a very bad look for him. Far worse than hia actual play. And could be indicative of a player thats not going to improve

The 5 best individual O-linemen starting is the wrong way to go. That's not the same as starting the 5 best linemen that work together. It takes teamwork on the O-line to be successful, not 5 individuals fighting their own battles.

The defensive tackles are working on unyielding strengths at contact, in their legs, That mixed with positional center of gravity body advantages. Strength building and coordination combining. Serious hard work and focus. Team actions head on now.

The defensive ends should be aiming at beating those movements of the defensive tackles and reflecting the center of gravity advantages while remaining first to a positional location.

Defensive line focus and team physical strength growth continually met. No cheap habits already with hardening bodies.

Both Tackle Spots are highly suspect and up for grabs in my opinion.
I think/hope a quality vet swing tackle has to be top of mind for them when the roster cuts start. I think Solari stunk. I believe the coaching will get steele on track again. Guyton? Who knows. All the attributes you can want.

Tyler Smith was a below average left tackle during his rookie season and I remember the Rams would putting Aaron Donald over him just to attack him. Don’t get me wrong Smith is our best offensive lineman but the last thing you want to do is put him at left tackle. It would be a disaster for the offensive line as a whole. Guyton would have to be really bad for the Cowboys to mess up the middle of the line with Smith, Bebe, and Booker.
Thats not true at all.
Tyler Smith grades per PFF
22: 73.3
23: 74.4
24: 75

He has improved slightly each season but there is no marked difference in his score from OT to OG. He does rank lower when stacked there because teams out their best OL at LT.
But he was never below average. He was a day 1 immediate starter graded player. 25 of 81 players at OT.

Compare that to Guyton who is 49.4 and Steel who was 67.

Dallas cannot allow play at LT like Guyton deployed last year ever again. No team overcomes that, and Dak is no longer immune to injury.

The staff will not set Guyton or Booker down. You have to let biggest investments grow.
