Schottenheimer: Blue has to be more consistent to play in games

I just don't agree with this logic.

I think most would agree that the Baltimore Ravens have a pretty deep roster, yet somehow they had 3 UNDRAFTED guys make the 53.

The commodes 7th round RB had a big impact week 1 btw.

Teams have proven over time that a lot of them suck really bad at drafting.
Of course undrafted guys make the roster: you only have 7(ish) draft picks and you have a salary cap to contend with, and it's a league where guys don't last long: rosters turn over very quickly.

And sure, you can point to a late-round pick every year that made a big impact early on. But there are over 100 guys drafted in the last 3 rounds: you shouldn't expect any particular one of them to be a world-beater.

Shotty is building a culture, You don't throw a rookie out there if he's not ready. The signs were there when Mazi was inactive, We will see whos inactive this week and see.

Oh, so Turpin can have special packages but Blue can’t? I watched his every game at Texas, he isn’t incompetent. He does make an occasional boneheaded play but he is more than capable to play 10 or so snaps a game. I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes though.
Ah, thanks, you reminded me of the other huge factor. Late round guys and backup RBs aren't active unless they play special teams. I don't know what special teams units they have Blue working in or how he's doing there, but that can also be a factor.

Turpin is ALREADY on the active roster as the returner (and contributor in other ST units). You're free to use him in "special packages" because you already know he's going to be active regardless. And it took him a while to make any sort of mark as a receiver.

You don't activate a 3rd QB because you want to run special packages with him. You can run special packages with your primary backup QB because he's already going to be active. Same deal.

So you only put him out there on plays where he's going to get the ball? Sounds like a great strategy that the defense will never pick up on. And when the other RBs get hurt, we'll just give him the ball on every play!
Well to be fair they don't line CeeDee or Turpin up in the backfield to fake it to them or have them pick up the blitz either yet it seems to work more often than not. I think you can scheme up ways to get the kid the ball in space and see what he can do.. but again.. not if he doesn't know his assignments yet.

You know those two first round picks that we have next year, ya well one will be spent on Jeremiah Love.
I can just picture McJerry gleefully waiting by the phone on draft day WAITING for other teams to beg for his extra picks.......Roseman on the other hand would be actively working the picks to gain the best deal he could get.

Ones a real GM and other one bought the position

How does that imply laziness or lack of motivation? It could just as easily mean he's not performing due to lack of ability.
"Consistency" is a code word for "not doing the right things."

That said, it could mean "not putting in the work," or it could just mean "slow to pick things up."

This is a call out by your HC. On a team absolutely desperate for talent at theRB position, this explains why Blue is not playing right now.

I’ve seen the calls by our fans for Blue to be “the man” and I understand why with his breakaway talent. But having the HC state publicly that Blue “lacks consistency” is usually code for “he isn’t ready to play” yet.

The difference between pro and college football is sizeable. If a young player isn’t fully committed to learn the playbook, know every detail of his assignments and doesn’t show it, being a “healthy scratch” awaits.

Thanks for being real about the situation, Some fan's think this is madden where there is no reality to it.

So then why is Blue still on the team?

If he is unwilling or unable to adjust to the Pro game because of things related to learning, studying, or work ethic then they should cut him.

Jerry thinks he can rehabilitate players with poor work habits and he has been wrong just about every time.

Seriously? He's a 21-year-old kid who's been a pro for about 4 months. Sometimes it takes guys a little while to figure it all out, develop good habits, realize what it takes to be in the pros vis a vis college, and yes, learn all the plays and all their assignments. I love that the reactions here range from "start him NOW!" to "cut him NOW!" Very typical CowboysZone.

I personally think it was wake-up call by the coaches........get your act together or you won't be here. Let's put it another way.......do you seen him being a healthy scratch for 17 games or even 8? I don't ....it appears he could be Deuce's replacement

I see what you are saying but Schotty's tone seems to suggest disappointment. Inconsistency and " you have to earn your chance to get out there" are strong statements, especially from an HC who probably hasn't spent a whole lot of time with him. Likely feeding off info from his position coach.
But we will see what happens over the next few games.......

This.

Blue > Sanders
Flournoy > Tolbert
Liafau > Murray
James > Sanborn
Not surprising. As I have observed and pointed out in previous threads, compensation and draft grade determines who plays. No doubt that Sanders, Tolbert, Murray and Sanborn are being paid more than the four counterparts you mentioned.

Pretty outrageous if you ask me.

But, you know, I heard the same thing about other players whose attitude and/or early actions drew a red flag. Remember Kelvin Joseph?

I was even one of the guys that thought Kelvin Joseph just needed more time. I pointed out that he was the youngest player selected in the draft that year.

I remember some posters defending RB Joseph Randle, when he was caught shoplifting. He was supposed to replace Demarco Murray, who had just broken the Cowboys record for most yards in a season.

However, Randle had already signaled a red flag when he openly criticized Murray, the NFL leading rusher the previous season. He said that Murray" left too much meat on the bone", suggesting that Murray should have gained more yardage.

Randle lasted four games. he was great for five carries after which he averaged less than two yards.

I'm not basing my opinion on one or two players, there really are several more, not just in the Cowboys history but throughout the NFL.

We should also trust that there were issues we know nothing about. An argument? A violation of rules? A reprimand? We don't know.

However, the fact that a 5th round draft pick has not "earned" the opportunity to even suit up for the game despite the Cowboys obvious need at that position is a telling sign, a very bright red flag.

Players that turn out to be immature and "need more time" very rarely accomplish much of anything in the NFL.
