I was going to buy a coworker's riding mower for $600, about ten years ago. When I got there it was in the back of his garage, with 4 flat tires, and a dead battery. I'd brought a battery with me, just in case, and the engine wouldn't even try to fire up. He'd left the fuel in it for about 5 years.

He said, "I'll make you a deal. How about you take it for free?" I cleaned out the mouse nests and rolled it up ramps into my truck.

Just happened to be stopping by a friend's house on the way home, and he wanted to dip the carb, and I wasn't gonna say no. After about half an hour we put the carburetor back on and it fired right up.

Been going strong ever since.
 
Not a flake of snow has fallen yet in NJ, but I already called out sick. I'm not driving in that crap.

I am surprised at just how many people have electric heat. I assumed most people had natural gas.

I put in for a vacation day for Monday. They're calling for 10-15", 25° with 30 mph wind gusts. There's no way any of our customers are gonna take deliveries anyway.

So far not that bad here. Few inches of snow, but not this 10-15" they predicted. Still plenty of Sunday precipitation left though. It will be a race for the city plows to get everything up and running again by Monday.

How you doing in your neck of the woods? From what I can tell you guys are right in the eye of the snow machine and also potentially for some ice as well


Thankfully we are on the northern edge of this storm swath so getting a dose but not the worst of this system.....

But weve gotten 12-14" since last Monday. Not sure if you heard about that 100 car pileup last Monday but I drove through that interstate about 45 minutes before that awful pile up. It was near whiteout conditions, I was thankful I missed the big event.....

Temps are an issue here. Friday night into Saturday the overnight temp was -18 by us. (Real temp--not wind chill)

Wind chills tomorrow overnight supposed to be near -30.....

This isn't just annoying or a nuisance, this is legitimately dangerous. Hope you (and all our forum brothers and sisters) are safe. Hang in there everyone... every day is one day closer to spring :rolleyes:

No. I shut the valve before storing it. I started it in the spring for a test. It could be that the thing is just too cold to start. Hopefully I won't need it. Once it warms up in the spring I will tear it down and clean it out.

The snow is pretty much just starting here, and we're expecting 10-15", last I saw. The temperature isn't nearly as bad as yours, but the lows are around 2°, with a high of around 25°, and wind gusts up to 30 mph.

I hate Winter. I'll just be happy if I don't lose power.

Hope everything works out for you! Where exactly are you?

But did you shut the valve and leave the engine running to burn off the fuel in the lines? Not that I think you're stupid, just that a lot of people don't know to do that.

I hate winter too. Passionately. Right there with you brother

Not to overstate but this isn't a "not my favorite time of year" situation

It literally drains every ounce of joy out of being alive for about 4 months every year. It's unrelentingly demoralizing. Just a soul crushing destroyer of joy and peace.

Hope your juice stays on. Keep us posted and be safe friend.....:thumbup:

No point in driving around in this. Here's something most people aren't aware of. Before I went back to the easy job, I plowed snow for the New Jersey Turnpike for 5 years. There's a lot of chatter over the radio. Every 5-10 minutes there is some kind of accident during a snow storm. Even if it's just a one car spin out, hitting the wall, and facing in the opposite direction. Some kind of accident happens every 5-10 minutes. I found that fascinating.
 
They were predicting around a foot of snow for the Oklahoma City metro area, ended up with approximately 7 inches here at my house, bitter cold though around 8° currently. Bad storm for sure but far from historic like they were predicting a couple days ago LOL

Doesn't surprise me a bit, especially in the first few snowfalls. I'd say 75% of people are driving either way to fast or way too slow, but probably the biggest cause of accidents is sudden changes, like hitting the brakes too hard or yanking the steering wheel.

Sure. The road needs your full attention. How many times does someone going 40 slam into the back of another doing 25. If you're not paying full attention, it might be too late to stop.

I remember one night I was on a plow team going down the highway 6 abreast. From shoulder to shoulder at 25mph. After about 30-45 minutes of this, I looked through one of my side mirrors. There were vehicles as far as the eye could see. Like bumper to bumper traffic. It was 1am. What are they all doing out there? People are nuts.
