Impact of Highest Paid Receivers

Yes, that is a huge problem, but spending huge chunks of salary cap on the wrong players is an even bigger problem.
Are we insinuating Dak, Lamb and Pickens are the wrong players? Because I’d argue those are your 3 best players.

Absolutely not, I'm stating that paying all 3 at the top of the market will most likely keep us from contending for a super bowl. Only way out is to push a pile of cap money down the road.

Of course, because they overpaid Diggs, Bland, and Osa. And then spent 7 mil on career bust Kenneth Murray. IR man Hooker made like 8 mil.

The spent, but not anywhere near wisely.
So we fear using money on two receivers but not this type of spending?

Push it. I don’t care about salary 5 years down the road.
And traded off their WR1 in the off.
so JSN could flourish. And if im not mistaken I thought he asked to be traded?

Both. Overspending and spending on the wrong players is a big reason we were a sub .500 team.
No a big reason was your DC was clueless and a terrible hire.

I guess do me I’d rather spend 30 million on Pickens then 30 million on 4 different Kenneth Murray’s. If you tell me we will use that money to sign prime time guys I’d listen but this front office hasn’t shown me that.

But it cuts across the narrative that Dallas is offense heavy with spending. They are currently saving a good deal on the offensive line...in stark contrast to the Eagles. But...the Eagles spend less on defense. The devil is in the details. I find this whole Pickens ain't worth it narrative rather funny. At the end of the day the Cowboys would have the best two-man tandem in football...when it comes to man coverage. The Cowboys have NEVER done addition by subtraction well...especially where it pertains to wide receivers.

If the Cowboys would show me that they want to be a SERIOUS run-first team like the 49ers then I wouldn't have an issue with Pickens being traded but they continue to show that they are NOT that team. They continue to show that they will lean on Prescott to carry the day...even when it's unwise. He avg 37 attempts per game for a good part of the 2025 season. He should be under 30.

THIS...RIGHT...HERE. Push it and if it fails then blow it all up and do a REAL rebuild. But this Stephen Jones type penny-pinching mindset is a dead end road imo. Go all in for the next two years and settle up in 2028...when you either extend Prescott or cut him.

Of course, because he wanted to be paid top of the market, and they said no, so he pouted.

I don't understand the importance of narratives.

Best two-man tandem so we can have the worst D in the NFL. Great idea.

Nope, not even close.

So, Kenneth Murray sucks and always has, but that's the DC's fault? You're kinda all over the place here.

I'd concur. The together they could definitely cut the league up with even an average defense. Too bad they didn't have even that in 2025. With that 2022 defense they could've put up a LOT of points. The defense gave them but 11 turnovers for the entire year iirc. In 2022 it was over 30.

False choice. False dilemma. Get outta here with that. Pickens (on the team or not) will not make or break the defense. That's hilarious and I think you know it.

It’s a cop out. Let me explain….the focus is Burrow, Jamar and Higgins…..

Here are cap hits from 2025

Hendrickson - 24 million
Cam Taylor Britt 4 million
Orlando Brown 16 million
Bj Hill - 8 million
Mike Gesicki 7 million
Joseph Assa 6 milliom
Geno Stone 6 million
TJ Slaton 5.4 million

Every single one of these guys underachieved….over 60 million plus. But the focus is on Higgins and Chase who actually do their jobs. Nevermind Burrow missed half the year….
And why didn't they do their job? Because they aren't talented. Why aren't they talented? Because there's only so much cap space to go around and spending huge chunks of it on just a few players doesn't work.

BTW, I'm not picking on the position, I'm saying paying any player 30-60 mil per season will affect your ability to win. Really simple math, dude, not seeing your cop out.

You're weird. You tokin' tonight?

This entire thread is about paying WRs 30 plus mill/season limits you elsewhere. I'm thinking you need to take some math courses.

I'm all for paying Pickens on a 5-6 year deal, w/ endloading most of the contract in years 4-6.

Seems to me that it limits you elsewhere only when you don't know what the hell you are doing. It's a relative thing. You can't deny that spending more on defense than offense (2025) is not the best argument against Pickens. Paying him doesn't really limit what you can do in the short term. The contract can be structured/restructured in ways that mitigate the short term impacts to the cap and available cash.

So we appear to be in agreement. But again...Pickens...on the team or off...won't make or break the defense. That's silly.

One of the talking heads (Cowherd maybe) was doing a comparison to how teams with the top 10 highest paid receivers fared. If I remember correctly only ONE (Philly) made the playoffs.

Thats a pretty telling statistic. I don’t see how we can have two of them on the same team, unless we want to be the Bengals.
It's not that simple. Who were the QBs on these other teams that didn't make the playoffs? I think the only really good one was Burrow. Copy Philly, not the Bengals. Philly did it by pushing all of the money forward. The Bengals also didn't have Barkley. Philly also had a really good defense. They didn't win on WRs alone. Whose fault is it that the Bengals trotted out that crap defense, their WRs? Or their crap GM? The Eagles are showing the league how they can have two high paid WRs and still win a SB. Why are we focusing on the ones that can't?

Exactly. If it fails oh well blow it up doesn’t bother me.
