Without question, the most impactful aspect of the trip was a day trip to Auschwitz/Birkenau. Words really can't convey just how soul-crushing the whole experience was. It is beyond belief - 1.1 million people died in Auschwitz during 1940-45. I am still processing everything i saw and heard.

I had a similar feeling when visiting the Arizona memorial in Hawaii and looking down on the sunken ship....but that pales in comparison to Auschwitz. It's a gut punch seeing evidence of such evil.
 
I have to hand it to the Polish - they didn't hold anything back at the Auschwitz memorial. It was raw, it was challenging and, this may sound weird, it was well done. I asked a couple of the guides and the curator of the museum, were there any records of guards at the camp that fled, asked to be transfered or otherwise, took no part in the atrocities? No response from anyone. I find that incredible.

Ok, I probably have shared enough.

Shoot, we're always up for more from you. Thank you for sharing with us. I will never go there, so anything you share will be more than I could have gotten in my journey.
 
Y'all know I have crazy dreams. Some feel like reality. The other day before waking up, I dreamt that I went to a Mexican restaurant and sat at the bar. There was a woman with a regal air about her sitting there. She held quite possibly the best baby on earth. Things were all Smurfy until the police walked up to speak with her. She asked me to hold the baby. They pulled her aside and said one of her children had been in an accident. They didn't know how bad it was and offered to drive her to the hospital. She panicked and went with them. I watched the whole thing and felt terrible for her until I remembered the baby. I spent the rest of the dream trying to find out who and where she was. I woke up and tried to get back to sleep so I could return her baby. This was an exercise in futility. It took a couple of hours to relax after that.
 
More bad news... resting in the local hospital following an emergency appendectomy yesterday afternoon. My wife thinks it seems from all the Polish sausages and pierogis i ate. I'm not sure.

As a side note, one of the decision criteria for selecting this part of Montana was good-to-excellent health care. My faith in the system was vindicated... they're taking very good care of me. Now one reason for that is my (Russian) wife's piercing looks and concerning questions.

I'm glad you're alright! What an Easter for you. Dang. Somehow I doubt it was the Polish sausages, but I won't argue with your wife. She sounds scary. But at least she loves you. Get better!

On second thought, forget what I said about fooling your brain into thinking you're falling asleep, by forcing strange, dreamlike thoughts. I don't think your waking thoughts can compare to your dreams, no matter how long you try.

MONTANALO! What in the world!?!?! On the bright side, you weren't mauled by a bear. On the other hand, Cowboys' fan down!!!! I'm really sorry your body has rejected your appendix. I've seen a lot of people have lots of life left in them after their surgery. You can still eat ice cream and enjoy lots of steaks. Just be careful so that you may witness another Cowboys Super Bowl. I can't guarantee that though. Get well soon!!!!!!

Your squirrel idea was valuable to my mental arsenal, so I'm keeping it. My dreams have always been crazy and some stronger (feel more real) than others. I tell y'all so as to journal my insanity. I live low key, but my dreams are sometimes Stephen Spielberg blockbusters. DA DA da dom Indiana Xelda and the bar of Mexican restaurants. No snakes! There can't be snakes! It's in my contract. Well, I think I know what will be in my nightmares tonight. Just great. I'm okay.
 
I always see threads here when someone puts down their dog, so I guess I'll join in. Lost my best pal, my German Shepherd, last week. Poor guy had too many medical complications from allergies and infections. Pretty mad at the original veterinarians who took care of him and never could get it right. Anyways, never been in an animal hospital like that late at night to save my dog. They even have the quiet rooms where you pick the type of service you want, just like regular funeral services. Don't know if I'll ever bother to get another dog, because I find it hard to believe I'll ever get one again as smart, noble, and loyal as my buddy. He was one of a kind. People were always complimenting how handsome he was (too bad I was married most of the years I had him, great conversation starter) and kids could tell how much he wanted to play with them. RIP buddy.

I had to put my GSD to sleep over 10 years ago, and it still hurts to think about it. If you know how to train a dog, they're the best there is.

I'm so sorry you lost your beloved German Shepherd. The loss of a pet has to be one of the worst kinds of pain. I wish I had words of comfort for you. I can only commiserate with you. God bless you for every effort you took to help him.
