Did Jerry or the coaches pick the new assistant coaches?

I think it is always a collaborative effort. We just always blame Jerry for the failures because we like to hope that this year is different.

When we switched from Mike Nolan (a buddy of Mike McCarthy's) to Dan Quinn in 2021, we brought in who Quinn wanted except where we mainly kept McCarthy guys. Jim Tomsula (a Nolan guy) had been the DL coach, Scott McCurley (a McCarthy guy) was LB coach, Harris (a McCarthy guy) was DBs coach along with Maurice Linquist, who had no ties to McCarthy or the Joneses. The only Jones guys were senior defensive assistant (whatever that means) George Edwards and assistant DL coach Leon Lett.

When we brought in Quinn in 2021, we kept McCarthy guys McCurley and Harris and hired Quinn guys Aden Durde and Joe Whitt. The only possible Jones influences were retaining Edwards as defensive assistant and Leon Lett as assistant line coach ... again, not key positions.

There's more examples that I can use, but I think this idea that Jones forces assistants onto his head coaches is mainly conjecture and not supported by the evidence. For all we know last year, No-Schott didn't really have an available coordinator in mind so even if the Joneses were to ones to bring in Eberflus, he had no issues with it, and if he'd had someone he was really dead set on, they would have gone that way. I think it was the same with McCarthy and Kellen Moore as OC.

To me, it's a little like Dallas bringing in Terrell Owens under Parcells. Parcells wouldn't have pursued the player but he also didn't strongly object to him being pursued. Coaches have said over and over again that those kinds of things are a collaborative effort. Now, if you go back directly to the days after Jimmy, I think there are plenty of examples of Jerry going off the rails and just doing what he wanted. That was wildcat Jerry, though.
BP did not want TO
anyone claiming otherwise is a fool

Our idiot GM had spent over two years being sidelined and he could not take it anymore.

That said Schotty has been allowed to get who he wanted pretty much
unfortunately including keeping his buddy at ST when he should have been gone

Yeah...I'm still miffed about them keeping him. He should have been replaced!!

If an "extensive search" wasn't given to aquire the HC, what does that say about the HC's "extensive search" for assistant coaches?

Merely a question

This is what I think too.The jones boys had to do the actual hiring and contracts, and I believe they sat in on some of the DC interviews.
But as for the assistants I think that was all Shotty and Parker.
This was a major change to what Jones boys have done in the past.
This is exactly right.

Whether some people want to believe it or not, the Joneses have actually changed their previous methods for hiring their defensive coordinator.

The old plan was to prioritize a veteran coach, often with past head coaching experience. This goes back to Rod Marinelli. Even if they were proven to be a terrible head coach, the Joneses still valued the experience.

Essentially they wanted a head coach offense and head coach defense.

The results - and lack thereof - speak for themselves.

But the Eberflush debacle was enough of a disaster for them to realize that their approach needed to change.

So they allowed their head coach to conduct his own search and interviews and they eventually agreed with his decision.

That change in philosophy is another reason for my optimism for this season.

Yea ........ this silly thread wants us to forget about 30 years of "my way or the highway" narcissism, pretending it has changed.

Jerry also hired Parcells and McCarthy ....... he has hired good coaches before ....... he just never lets them gain to much power because he does not want a repeat of Jimmy.

This time he hired a puppet head coach and then a young coach from a rival and certain fans are convinced its an all new Jerry.

Pitiful
Lol

I believe that Schotty picked his new coordinator and he picked the assistants that he wanted. I'd like to see what the board thinks.
I don’t think any of the new assistants the last two years were ever on Jerry’s radar.

Last years offensive crew was all Schottenheimer and Adams.

You’ll recall that as soon as he was hired Parker started interviewing existing staff and said that all of them were free to “explore opportunities”.

JJ Clark was a Schottenheimer hire but was the only defensive coach that Parker retained. He was impressed enough to promote him from quality control to assistant LB coach under Symons, who was a Parker hire.

At least six of Parker’s other staff are 100% his and came from the Fangio tree or Parker’s college connections. Obviously Schottenheimer had to interview and agree but it looks like he let Parker shop for his own groceries, to quote Parcells.

Schottenheimer has been in the league quite awhile and around the league his entire life but on both sides of the balls he went outside his own network.

When he was brought on, he said he was trying to go outside his own personal direct network that he had worked with.

He instead used his existing network that for referrals. He said he was after young, innovative coaches and that’s how Adams and Parker both came to the team. That’s the “wide net” that @big dog cowboy mentioned.

Can you imagine anyone in the NFL or college being able to remotely relate to Jerry or be part of his “network?”

The only leftover that Jerry (or McCarthy) hired are Carlos Polk (ST) and Lunda Wells, who is highly regarded, which is why Schottenheimer kept him.

These last two off season are very different though. Jerry’s fingerprints aren’t on either side of the roster now that Schottenheimer and Parker purged the defense.

Schottenheimer purged the offense of Jerry taint last year

Good stuff.

Unfortunately it will be completely ignored by those who choose to be willfully ignorant and create their own reality.

Parcells said that he had no objections to the player being brought here. That's different than not wanting. If he had objected, I don't think Jerry would have signed him. He was indifferent to Owens, which gave Jerry the hole he needed.

I do absolutely agree with you on Sorenson.

I think fans want to believe it is different. They want to say No-Schott purged the Jerry taint on offense last year but then blame Jerry for the defensive hire. I think No-Schott deserves some of the blame because he was probably too focused on building his offensive staff to take on the task on the defensive side, so he deferred to the GM.

I kind of see it like Kellen Moore under McCarthy. Most Cowboys fans probably believe Moore was forced on McCarthy, but I believe McCarthy saw that we had one of the top offenses under and thought he could build on that instead of tearing down and starting over. Would he have chosen Moore without the Joneses' influence? Probably not. But I see no indication that he had a problem with retaining Moore.

Now, I do believe we are best off when the Joneses stay out of coaching decisions. I just don't see evidence of Jerry telling his head coaches, here's who I want so deal with it. I believe the evidence shows it s a collaborative effort. I think it's likely that No-Schott told Jerry after Eberflus what kind of process he'd like to go through to find the next defensive staff and Jerry agreed. But I don't think that's any different than how he's worked with previous coaches.
