It matters to those the dead leave behind who know that the death didn't have to happen because someone chose to take a stupid risk they knew was wrong but did it anyway (that's why there are laws for that). pure speculation on my part:

He may have taken some pain meds after getting in his car.

He has a bad back.

It had to be killing him. Plus he has a long drive.

Maybe he smoked a joint after the round of golf.

He has back problems. He could be using Marijuana for pain. If he smelled of weed and had bloodshot eyes. That would get him the OWI.

It's not as simple a data cutout due to testing/reporting irregularities among states (e.g., NC doesn't test at all), drug types tested for, and lack of standardized impairment levels, but in 2021 over 10,000 deaths resulted from drivers who tested positive for a drug that could cause impairment and the national number has been rising for some time.

But if you were to consider those numbers, the 32% of fatalities you quote for 2022 becomes 56% with drugs added in. And this is without mandated standards which are expected to improve.

Yes. Someone can be careless for something that had nothing to do with them like being distracted by others in the vehicle. And it's an in the moment occurrence. A drunk or impaired driver had way more time to make a better decision to not even get behind the wheel in the first place, and possibly against the advice of others since their impairment can be observed in some cases.

True. State laws vary and I have no clue about that states laws. Some states can get a warrant for a blood test, others don’t. Some have varying degrees of impaired . In a few days we will know.
