New Cowboy Broderick Jones Is A Lot Better Than People Think | Film Review

“Moved up half a round”? We gave them our 3rd and 6th. They gave us their 4th. Draft slots haven’t been determined yet, so trying to minimize the cost to support the trade is weak sauce.

When we sit on our hands for the entire third round and watch good players get scooped up, I doubt you will feel great about this trade

2027 is set to be the deepest draft in years, and our cupboard is looking pretty bare.

If Jones pans out, I will give you your props. A starting OT is more valuable than a 3rd round pick.

But if he turns out to be what he has shown himself to be since coming into the league, we just shorted ourselves in a big way in a deep draft and still have issues at OT
100%

It comes down to probability of success, and given all the contextual evidence, I’d (without flinching) put all my chips on this acquisition fizzling out.

I was down on trade because of his injury and conditioning. It just doesn’t look like a win now move. Honestly, his past performance calls into question if he’ll ever be a quality tackle.

Also, people are getting the trade cost wrong due to a reliance on hope, rather than history (and math).

Here’s how Sturm broke down the trade value.

Using 2026 prices, Dallas sent away picks 76 and 193 for Pittsburgh for 121. That means Dallas sent away 210 pts and 14.2 for a total of 224.2 points in exchange for 52 points. The net loss of 172 points or roughly pick No. 84 which is a mid-round 3rd.

Of course, for those predicting a Cowboy Super Bowl run and the Steelers drafting Arch Manning, the math will be different
The value of those draft picks has not been determined yet so you can’t say people are getting the trade value wrong. People just have different opinions on how the upcoming season will shake out. The Steelers having a down year with a new coaching staff and an even older Aaron Rodgers isn’t crazy prediction.

Honestly, I don’t understand why the content creator didn’t review all three preseason games.

Jones was much worst in the first two games and then, against the true end of the roster Bills players and some guys who were days away from getting cut, he had a decent game.
You answered your own question... Lots of views to be gained from Cowboys fans who want to hear good things.

That was a moronic post.

It is like you are trying to make people forget about your dumb take previously.

Grown ups just say when they are wrong. Be a grown up. The other option is just being a hypersensitive loser -- I know there are role models for that behavior but you really shouldn't be looking to them as examples.
It was actually all factual ,I do NOT get what you're talking about you're calling me a moron that what you're saying that my post made no sense and there was no facts in it at all you need to stop smoking and drinking during the day because apparently you have no idea that that was 100 percent real....

Hey but carry on I mean you think you know things and I've following the Cowboys a long time and all the things that I stated in that post which I don't think you read at all I think you don't understand you're wrong And unless it's a massive emergency they will not use Tyler Smith as a left tackle Jones and the guy they just got on the practice squad will be the tackles they will be gone too first that is why the depth chart says so But we do have to have a swing tackle they keep one on every team because they don't have enough room on the active game day roster to have a tackle for each backup spot every time so they have a swing guard and a swing tackle so you can go back to whatever you're smoking and drinking because what you said makes no sense but don't call me a moron...

It's gonna get you in some hot water you don't wanna be in..

Well, "half a round" was a bit of an optimistic estimate but if we finish Top 10 (pick at 22) and Pittsburgh finishes bottom 10 (pick at 10) that's 20 picks, so close to half a round. Then there's the 6th round pick, which rarely produce a quality player (but not never (see Flournoy)).

As for Jones, if he's better than Steele overall a year from now, it's not a bad trade. Kind of a like a fifth round pick for something like a 4th-round talent — even if he's just a decent backup that's better than we usually do with 4th round OTs.

Jones is going to be a much better player a year from now, and I think some people are going to look pretty silly for writing him off already.

The Cowboys have better coaching, better development, and a better environment around him. Give them a year to work with him and get him ready, and I think you're going to see a significantly better player.

And yes, I agree with the video. He's better than most people think. The funniest part is how much people are complaining about the move when the Cowboys barely gave anything up to get him.

Put it this way: if Dallas had moved up half a round and surrendered a 6th-round pick, they probably still wouldn't have been able to draft a tackle this good. That's how little this cost.

So I'll gladly take the guy with the upside and let the Cowboys develop him. A year from now, I think we'll be talking about how good this move was while some of the people criticizing it today will be pretending they liked it all along.
Well said.
At first I was not sure about the trade. Giving away a 3rd round pick. The more I thought about it. The more it makes sense.
A 3rd round and a 6th round, get a 4th round back. Essentially moving down what may be around 15 picks, maybe 20 adding in awarded comp picks in the 3rd.

Get a former 1st round pick. That still can contribute right away. And possibly, probably, will become the starting RT. Maybe by the end of this season.

I told my Steelers friends, half way through the 2024 season that Dallas would trade for Pickens. I was right. We still banter and have fun over that.
Back before the draft, I told her Jones had an injury. That they needed OL in the draft. They drafted an OL. I said Dallas may end up with Jones (was kind of kidding). Then when it happened, she said that is ok, we got the new guys. But he is listed as 2nd team right now for the Steelers.

Told her I think Porter Jr (her favorite player). is safe form a trade to Dallas though.

Well, "half a round" was a bit of an optimistic estimate but if we finish Top 10 (pick at 22) and Pittsburgh finishes bottom 10 (pick at 10) that's 18 picks, so close to half a round. Then there's the 6th round pick, which rarely produce a quality player (but not never (see Flournoy)).
Those extra 6 round picks can be used trade up to the top of the 4th round.

Improve markedly? No.

You’re appealing to his college pedigree from years ago (2020-2022).

He’s been horrible in his three seasons as a pro. I’ve posted the comparative grades between he and Steele. Jones is actually worse than the guy he’s supposed to be competing with. He now has his spine fused. It was an acute injury; not something that was chronically bothering him that could be used as an excuse for his poor play that he finally got fixed.

Folks are hanging their hats on “oh, well he’s still gaining his weight back…he’s not even at full strength…” which insinuates there’s a history of him being a good NFL tackle pre-injury but that isn’t the case.
“So you’re telling me there’s a chance”

I get that, but why risk so much to trade for such a huge physical risk like that? What are Schottenheimer, his coaches and the front office smoking?
Sadly AC the Cowboys made the trade because they have no faith in Steele. I know what the Giants plan to do defensively opening night. There will be an all out assault on Terrence.

All fair points, maybe I’m being too optimistic I see Pitt fans are elated he’s gone esp with the compensation.
He was actually rated higher then Steele in pass pro last year which is more of my concern. I guess you’re not predicting him to take his job? Based on Schotty’s comments it seems inevitable.

In a world where the Cowboys actually compete in free agency I'm not as upset about the Cowboys trading picks as I would be in years past. If Jones was an established starter and not a reclamation project he would be worth more than a 3rd/4th pick swap and a 6th.

But then again, you’re not a coach, or a scout or an NFL GM so it’s hard to tell without that knowledge. We’ll see soon enough. I have no idea either.

If Jones replaces steele next year. That third will be a steal. If he becomes a back up (reliable) it's a wash. Do not care who's there in the third round is a 27/draft.

Sometimes a new environment helps players. He doesn’t have to be an all-pro. If he’s just better than what we have which allows us to move on from a more expensive guys, it’s a win

If he’s better than Speele it’s great deal. If he’s just an avg tackle that’s better than Steele. Steele is a decent run blocker but really bad pass blocker and he’s paid a lot. A cheaper players who just avg is an improvement

True but if Jones turns into a quality starting tackle the cost will be worth it. Yes that's a big "if" but so is a third round pick. If Marist Liufau was worth a 3rd then the Cowboys wouldn't have had to make Jaishawn Barham a 3rd.
