Did the Cowboys overpay for Porter?

Grading this trade happens on two levels, for me.

Does JPJr. lock down the #1 corner spot with his play?

Does that unlock Downs opportunity to play his natural role more?

If either of those are true it’s a no-brainer win.

If both become true it’s an absolute boon for the D.

No you said you can't get a top tier player for a lower round pick Unless I was reading somebody else's response or you were being facetious I'll go back and read it but I was just saying that's wrong You can get a top tier corner for a second round pick if you can get a top tier wide receiver for a 3rd round pick I'm just saying yes deals can be made deals are made and sometimes kind of how the Cowboys were in a tough position and only got a 5th round pick for Amari but there were reasons for that But people think we got robbed we didn't sometimes you just have to get rid of a player because of a salary that he doesn't fit and you just get what you can.

If I'm wrong that you said that OK I'll take it back if not then I stand my ground Joey Porter Junior's worth A second for one we get to see a 14 game long job interview but again even if he doesn't workout we flat out let him go and release him we get a 3rd round comp pick this is a low risk deal but yes good players can be had for deals it just doesn't usually happen with the Cowboys but the last couple of seasons the Cowboys have shown they've made some really good deals At least they're fair they're not getting robbed.
I said you're not getting an established top tier CB for a 2nd round pick. Never going to happen. Let alone a 2nd round pick two years from now. You're giving up 1 or 2 first rounders for the player. Pickens was a different story. He wasn't yet established and considered a head case. We ended up getting a steal. Now he'll command more than a 2nd round pick two years from now.

Despite the trade charts, in 2028 we will be without our 2nd rd pick. If he leaves as a FA we could receive a comp pick at the bottom of the 3rd. That isn’t equivalent to a 2nd.
Never said it was. My only argument is that its not an "over pay." Of course everything is dependent on results. On the surface it's a fine deal.

Only way this'll work is if we pay both Porter and Pickens and push most of their money down the road and knock the draft out of the park.
I totally agree. I hope the Jones dummies don't view this as one or the other.

I say he’s top 10, which makes him top tier. Too many people throw around the word “elite” like it’s the same as “All-Pro,” but that’s fine if you see it differently. I believe he’s one of the top corners; he just doesn’t make a lot of flashy plays, so people undervalue him and call him something else. Deals happen all the time, and they got a good one here. We could argue about this all day, but I’ll just say I disagree. For a second-round pick, he’s a great pickup. Top tier? Out of at least 78 corners in the league, probably closer to 90 if you count how many are on the field at once, being in the top 10 or 15 makes you top tier.

That’s just the law of averages.

Maybe there are around 90 cornerbacks who see playing time across all teams in the league, and if this guy is ranked between 10 and 15, that makes him top tier, not elite, but definitely top tier.

Ideally, you’d land a player like this in the second round, which is what they hoped for with those other second-round picks that didn’t pan out.

I’m going to get back to my usual focus and stop reading your responses, since I don’t think you understand what “top tier” means.

Hopefully my explanation helps you broaden your perspective, stop just looking at the top five guys like Christian Gonzalez, who, by the way, isn’t helping New England win right now because he’s injured. Sure, let that so-called top-tier guy be on the losing side of the Super Bowl, didn’t help much there.

People say the Cowboys got a good deal, but look at Sauce Gardner and what the Colts gave up for him, that’s the move the Cowboys could’ve made, chasing one of these “top-tier” players and overpaying, only to be disappointed.

I’d rather draft a second-rounder who’s worth that spot and have him perform as a really solid player.

He is a top 10 corner I mean easily because he's a cover corner he don't get all the accolades people are not running out to buy his jerseys because he's not taking high risk trying to play hero ball and get interceptions he's not a ball hawk the dude just does his job in covers he's got a crazy wingspan this is one of those big outside corners that we've been looking for for a while that plays physical he tackles he stays glued to his guy and yeah sometimes he gets penalties but because he's not a rah rah interception stacked up stack guy that somehow he's being degraded and that's ridiculous.

That is why I say let's just see how he plays here but the big difference here is like a power back that just gets The Dirty yards and does his job like Williams our guy not going to get all the accolades he just has quiet days at the office he brings in his lunch pail does his job had one of the better seasons last year even though he got disrespected like this before he actually played a game for the Cowboys and then showed everyone what he can do.

But sure the guy breaking plays and having a similar year in production but looks much prettier he's fast look he spins he hurdles people blah blah blah that is the difference here fans are wanting the rah rah and when they don't see it they degrade a player.

.
Ah, the old "Because I say so" thingie. Never mind that the experts don't rate him that high, "I THINK........"

We have been complaining that we need a great DB we get one and everyone still complaining unreal!

I was just responding to this:

“A second in 2028 is the equivalent of a 3rd in 2027 per draft trading charts.”

These salary dump trades by the cowboys are very smart, they get to see the player in their system before any extension is made. They have the option to keep the player or get a lower pick back in return

The people that think a future 2nd round pick is an overpay haven't been paying attention to what the Cowboys' second round picks have been lately.

A 4th or so.

Only way the trade for Porter makes sense is if we are super bowl contenders and needed that final piece.

Hey, maybe it can work out if we sign him to a huge deal and push the money down the road. However, Porter just isn't worth top dollar for a CB. He's generally viewed as a top 10-15 CB, not top 5. And he's specifically a man press corner. And we play 75% zone.

It's a kneejerk because it's a trade using high draft picks to desperately try to fix a D that has been terrible. Not sure how having talks w/ PITT about him for a while makes it not a kneejerk.
Its all about how CP uses him. It sounds like he will shadow the best wrs and being the boundary corner will get plenty of opportunities at man coverage. This is supposed to be CPs strength. We will see.

NFL defenses play zone coverage on approximately 68% to 70% of their defensive snaps on average.
Modern professional football has largely become a zone-centric league, with most teams operating around a 70/30 or 68/32 split favoring zone over man-to-man coverage. Individual team rates vary widely based on scheme and personnel, typically ranging from roughly 65% to over 85% zone usage for the heaviest zone-reliant defenses.
Top Zone-Heavy Defenses
Recent advanced tracking data highlights the teams most heavily reliant on zone schemes:
TeamZone Coverage Rate
Minnesota Vikings85.9%
Washington Commanders85.0%
Pittsburgh Steelers84.3%
Seattle Seahawks83.8%
Buffalo Bills79.8%

IMO it was a good trade. I'm all for it. We didn't pay top dollar, that's what matters. Same for Pickens. We didn't pay top dollar. These are good trades IMO.
