Some people in the world just don't get it until it's all over.

And some just need more time than others. We can not forsake them if there is still a chance.

I obviously don't know Josh Brent, so I can't say if he is one of those or not, but some eventually come around after hitting the bottom.

We can't give up on them as long as there is a chance.

I think Brent's problem is addiction. Not that he is a "thug" type, .. like AH situation.

Ok, just looked it up, Could of sworn this guy was off the roster. Thought his *** was cut along time ago.

Anyways, who cares about Josh Brent?

Ok, I know I'll get knocked for being the grammar police, but I hate when I see someone using "could of" instead of "could've". You do realize the difference, don't you?

Not really. What he did was dumb and there is no question about that. However, once he gets convicted because he failed 2 drug tests he will enter the system under a drug/substance abuse classification. When he is in jail he will be in the drug program and must complete a drug abuse program that will allow him to get out sooner. Michael Vick did the same thing. It's a loophole in the system.

Others just glossed over this post. Is this true? If so, it completely explains his and the Cowboys' actions.

It was time to cut this guy the moment he got arrested for driving drunk and killing his friend. He shouldn't have been on the team any longer at that point.

It's way beyond the time to cut him at this point.

He is either really stupid, beyond what I initially thought, or is having a really hard time dealing with the loss of his friend and has turned to drugs and alcohol. I really hope its not the latter.

Ah think the lad turned to alcohol waaaay before he killed his best friend while DWI.
Pls. no excuses about turning to intoxicants because of a loss of friend. If that were a valid excuse then all Americans would be alcoholics and drug useers.

He's just a bad seed. He needs to stay in jail for a long time. Case closed.

His problem is indeed addiction.... but in the NFL addiction doesn't cut it. I GETS you cut.

I hate to be the grammar police, but I hate when people put periods outside of a quotation. You do realize that's incorrect, don't you?

It's annoying how these athletes are too out of touch with reality or simply don't care. They have it made getting paid extremely well to play a game.

I'm not sure it's a loophole. From what I can tell the crime is attributed, in large part, to a substance abuse problem that is documented prior to the arrest. Looks like they aim to rehabilitate the substance abuse problem and thereby improve the person's ability to make clear decisions. Who knows if it's effective. I can't imagine it's any worse than serving the time given.

Looked around a bit for info on and found this:

http://www.famm.org/Repository/Files/FINAL RDAP FAQs 9.9.pdf

I'm not sure it will apply to Brent. Would he get sent to a Federal Prison because it looks to be only a Federal program?

Also, manslaughter is listed as a disqualifier. Not sure if they would differentiate for intoxication manslaughter.

He also may not get accepted to it because he doesn't have a documented abuse problem prior to the crash.

If he doesn't get more than 24 months he also can't be accepted and even if he gets more than 24 months he must have at least 24 months remaining in order to qualify and apparently the application process is timely itself which would mean his sentence is longer than Vick's and he won't play another down for at least 3 seasons.

And even after all that if he some how gets accepted he's only going to get early release to a halfway house, I believe. His sentence will still be running and while he might be living at a halfway house or be lucky enough to get sentenced to home detention because of overcrowding, I can't imagine the NFL is going to allow him to resume so long as his sentence is still running.

Not really. The team's decision shouldn't even include how much time he'll get because it's going to be significant enough that he won't play for quite some time and ultimately it doesn't change the fact that he's irresponsible and continues to behave in a manner that completely flies in the face of the teams responsibility and accountability mantra.

He got a DUI before joining the team. Didn't learn his lesson there and got another DUI, killing someone in the process.

While waiting for his legal proceedings he tests positive for weed. 3 weeks later and undoubtedly after being informed of his first failed test he tests positive again.

He literally tested positive, was told of the positive test, and then went home and smoked more weed. And he did this at a time in which he absolutely has to be on his best behavior.

He can't make responsible decisions. I'm not sure what it would take for the team to cut him loose but he should have been out the door the moment that first test came back positive. And I'm being considerably generous by buying into the team line about "supporting" the guy after the crash.
