Why do lots of fans say we can beat any team

Unfortunately you are right. However, that wouldn't be so if we had our starters in place.

I can't disagree with that -- Spencer might have been the best 3-4 OLB in the league last year and Ware was in the top 3.

Of course, there was a lot of conjecture about whether Spencer would project well into the DE position -- I suspect we'll never know. This is his last year with Dallas (likely) and next year a 3-4 team will gladly pick him up.

Because they can (Denver game) but they won't.

We are a good enough team to play with anyone in the NFL. That doesn't mean we can beat any team when it comes down to crunch time, but we can keep it close with anyone.

Some of us know the difference between "can" and "will".

I understand the difference and I'm starting to feel that they "can't".

This team is talent deficient in too many phases. I even think some of the starters that people still laud aren't as great as some believe.

They do have some elite talent, but not enough. Not enough to make up for the rest of the problems on the field.

The myth that this team is as talented as any team out there is just that- A Myth.

They aren't cellar-dwellers, but they are not a very good team- talent-wise.

Romo bandages a lot of wounds.

Maybe. I would try to resign him. He's a stout strong side DE and I have no doubt he would play the run well. I also think he would get a good pass rush. Having Bass, Crawford, Spencer and Ratliff gone is killing this defense. Missing Church at the end of the Det game and not having Wilcox impacted that game along with the DL problems. It's a pity we will never know how the last two years would have gone had we not had so many injuries.

Another pity is everyone blames Garrett for those.

Big Dog, aren't we way beyond "blame" at this point. At some point it's just about the results on the field -- if Garrett finishes up 8-8 for the third year row the excuses (legitimate or otherwise) cease to matter much.

I think the starting talent is above average for sure, however I think the talent of the depth is sub-par.

Add them together and the Cowboys overall talent for players 1-53 is 'average'. Oddly enough that corresponds nicely with their record -- 'average' at 4-4.

Don't agree. This no depth issue was true 3 years ago. Not really true now.

But hey losing 3 of your top 4 defensive lineman is no big deal. Any team could overcome that right?

We have elite special teams and offensive personnel.

Unfortunately the defense has again been decimated...lost Bass, Spencer, Ratliff, Crawford, Ware (3 games it's looking like), Wilcox and even have now lost Claiborne (again) and Church was hurt as well.

And of course we lost Austin again.

People who say this team doesn't have backend talent haven't been paying attention to the good drafting and injuries we've faced.

But hey it let's you sing a narrative.

Toruk:

Do you think the Cowboy are unique in their injury situation? Looks at the best teams in the NFC:
  • Seahawks: Missing both of their starting offensive tackles, missing the best WR in Harvin, now missing their 2nd best WR in Sidney Rice, lost their best pass rusher (Irvin) to a suspension, etc
  • 49ers: Missing their top 2 WRs in Crabtree and Manninhham, missing possibly the best 3-4 pass rushing OLB in Aldon Smith, Missing 2 out of their top 3 corners in Culliver and Eric Wright
  • Packers: Missing both of their 1st round pick offensive tackles from 2010 and 2011 in Bulaga and Sherrod for the entire season, missing both of their starting OLBs in Nick Perry and Clay Matthews, missing two top WRs in James James and Randall Cobb, missing their starting TE (for the season likely) in Jermichael Finley, missing their #1 CB (#4 rated in the entire NFL in 2012) in Casey Heyward, etc
Stop whining about the Cowboys injuries -- good teams find a way to fight through them -- typically through superior depth.

Seahawks: Their tackles are coming back. They lost a WR in Rice who is worse than Austin who hasn't been healthy in a month. Losing a guy to suspension...we don't do...and it's exactly why we have a RKG mentality. Oh and they traded for an injury prone WR. Hard to get upset when he get's injured. They have also beaten only 2 teams with a winning record (lost to a 3rd). So given our history and their schedule it's reasonable to assume we'd be 5-3.

49ers: Manninhham would be what..a 4th pass catcher here? Does he even matter? Losing Crabtree is tough. Losing Smith..we don't do...and it's exactly why we have a RKG mentality. They lost 2 of their 3 corners...we have had a hurt claiborne, church and wilcox nevermind our defenesive line issues. They have also only beaten 1 team with a winning record (lost to two others). So given our history and their schedule it's reasonable to assume we'd be 5-3.

Packers: Their injuries are most comparable to us. They have beat exactly 1 team with a winning record (ironically the Lions). So given our history and their schedule it's reasonable to assume we'd be 5-3.

Oh and btw last year the Cowboys had the 3rd most missed starts by starters in the entire NFL. That's fact. So please stop with your nonsense.

Technically, it's true, any NFL team theoretically CAN beat any other NFL team.

Doesn't mean they will, but means they can.

SEA's backups on their DL are Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, and Jordan Hill. CIN's are Wallace Gilberry and high draft picks Devon Still, Brandon Thompson and Marquis Hunt. MIA has 1st-round picks Dion Jordan and Jared Odrick coming off their bench. All 9 of those guys could either start for any team or at least have the pedigree of being high draft picks. So yeah, a few teams could actually overcome losing some of their top DL thanks to using strange foreign obscure methods like "good drafting" which translates to "good drafting" in English and/or "smart FA signings" which translates to "smart FA signings" in English.

DAL on the other hand has low-ceiling draft picks like Crawford and Wilber and a bunch of street FA's backing up it's aging 30-year old+ starters on the DL. See the difference?

Dallas absolutely COULD beat any team in the league, given the right breaks and if the Cowboys are actually firing on all cylinders. In today's NFL, you could say that about any team really.

Well, except Jacksonville.

Did you miss the part where Seattle was able to go on a spending spree this offseason thanks to Wilson's contract?

Same in cincy and Miami.

Where were GB, NE, ATL and NO in the FA market?

The truth is that so far, under Garrett, the Cowboys can beat any team in the league, as long as they are under .500. We have a 16-1 record agains bad teams. But when Dallas faces a good team (over .500), we are 4-19. Now, it's obvious you do worst against better competition, but Dallas is 28th in the league when doing so under JG.

So looking at the numbers, since Garrett was hired, we haven't been able to beat any team in the league.

Guess because we went toe to toe with the Broncos and lost 51 to 49 a close game and 99 points. We lost a close one to Detroit and Kansas City, so people feel we have the ability to win games.

Fans holding the head coach responsible for the performance of the team over multiple seasons?

Oh, thats right. I forgot we had to make excuses for Opie not being able to get it done.
