Have the Cowboys ever drafted a player you really wanted?

I was really happy when jerry signed deion. Was pretty happy when we drafted Dez. I'm still really upset about not being able to draft Patrick Peterson.

Dez
Roy Williams
Tyron Smith

Guys I really wanted that fell to us but we passed on:

Steven Jackson
Terrell Suggs
Aaron Rodgers
- Didn't know he'd turn out to be this good obviously, but I really liked him at Cal under [then head coach] Jeff Tedford and I got really excited when he slipped to us thinking we might take him. Could you imagine if we had? Romo was still an unknown backup and I was already ready t move on from Drew Bledsoe

I really wanted Terrance Williams(I'm a Baylor Fan) last year and when we got him I told a friend of mine that it didn't matter what happened the rest of the draft I was happy.

For this year I know It's not going to happen because we already have two safeties who are better playing forward than backwards, but I would not be disappointed if Ahmad Dixon(Baylor) wound up on the roster. We could use a guy who plays with his intensity and passion on the defense.

I actually fell for Dez while he was playing college ball at OSU. When I saw him play, I assumed he'd go top 5 and we'd have no chance. When the draft finally rolled around, I assumed he wouldn't fall to us in the 20s. When he kept falling, I was more hopeful but I still had a feeling we were gonna pass on him. We ended up picking him and I was excited.

With Claiborne, I didn't follow him in college but I bought into all the draft hype. Every mock draft and "expert" had him going top 5 and called him the best defensive player in the draft. We needed a CB so I thought it was a sure thing, but I had no idea we'd trade up for him. I didn't like giving up a 2nd but I was excited to have him. Now I'm just gonna actually watch the guy play instead of just buying into the hype.

Some more then others but I really wanted E.Smith. When he played HS football my brother and I used to follow the HS write up in the USA today. E.Smith was always in it with crazy stats. He followed that up at Florida doing the same thing.
then The Cowboys took him, if I remember correctly, with the 17th pick in The 1990 draft.
The rest is history.

Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Bob Hayes, Randy White & Troy Aikman.

I wanted them to draft Stephen Jackson. I upset when they passed.

Dez

Felix Jones. Saw him in the same backfield as McFadden at Arkansas and thought they would both be superstars. Wrong on both

I'm a big college football fan so I also was thrilled with Dez. Followed him since his Freshman season where it looked like he was destined for top 5 and we'd have no shot, was going nuts when he kept falling on draft day and we traded up.

No one's going to admit they were thrilled about Mo because he hasn't lived up to it yet because of injuries, but he was a star at LSU and looked every bit the part of a shutdown, ball-hawking CB. I was really excited when we got him, and I'm still not giving up on him, Changing DC's and schemes in his 2nd year would be hard to adapt to for most players but I think he becomes that stud for us this season. Confidence is the biggest issue right now, once he regains that his natural ability will take over.

Seems that they pass on my pet projects every year, but I was a massive Aikman fan when he was at UCLA, so I was really stoked when things lined up for Dallas to draft him.

Yes.

Dez, Witten, Ware and Marcus Spears. To a lesser extent, Spencer and Romo (I know he was a UDFA, but I was hoping they would pick him up when he went undrafted).

Yeah. Several times.

Roy Williams in 2002 - I will admit that I was absolutely in love with this guy when he was coming out of OU. His first few years in the pros I really thought we got something really special.

Terrance Newman 2003 - Yep. I definately wanted him and was thrilled we got him.

Jason Witten 2003 - Obviously I didn't know he'd turn out this great but I loved him at Tennessee and I wanted him badly. So glad we got him.

Tyron Smith 2011 and Dez Bryant 2010 the last few years. I wanted Dez, really bad, but I didn't think there would be any way possible that he'd fall to us. I was so thrilled when he did.

We just missed, or completely screwed up on a couple times too.

I wanted AP so bad I could taste it the year he came out but the Vikings snagged him right before we could. I remember at the time thinking that he was ours after he got back 7 and then the Vikings took him and it made my heart sink.

I also wanted Stephen Jackson so bad I could hardly stand it. ANd when he fell right into our laps I couldn't have been more pleased. To tell you how angry I was when we traded back at that point, instead of taking Jackson, and wound up with Jones instead....probably the most angry I've ever been in my life at the Cowboys drafting.

The only thing close to that was Randy Moss. I wanted him. Without question I thought he was the best player that year. But I knew, going in, that Dallas would very likely pass on him because of the off the field stuff and with the stuff they'd been going through with Irvin at the time...I always liked Greg Ellis, and he gave us everything he had, but I always was sad we didn't take Moss.

I was a big fan of Tony Dorsett at Pitt. When the Cowboys made the trade for the 2nd overall pick in the draft, and Tampa did their normal Tampa thing by taking Ricky Bell, I was in shock with elation! I KNEW Dorsett was about to become a Cowboy! HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!
