Have the Cowboys ever drafted a player you really wanted?

I really liked E. Smith coming out of college and wanted the team to select him and of course we all know what happened.

T. Smith is another guy I wanted and team selected him.

We seem to strike gold with 1st rounders named Smith. Any DE, DT, FS, or QBs named smith coming out in recent drafts? Hmmm

I bought into the Johnson Hurricanes well before he came to Dallas, so needless to say I instantly loved the Irvin choice, even though it was questionable how he would get along with Coach Landry.

I forgot about Roy Williams. That highlight where he dived to get to the QB had me hooked. When we traded down to the 8th pick I almost passed out (so did he). I was happy we got him, but that didn't quite work out.

Roy was a player from the wrong time. If he played in the 70s he would have been great.

The most recent pick and maybe the only player I ever really wanted this team to draft was Dez. I remember the day of the draft, I was thinking that Jerry has to find a way to trade up and get Dez somehow. I never thought he would've dropped that far where Jerry could trade up for him and not break the bank.

I mean I really never wanted any of the Tripleletts going into their drafts to be honest. I was cool when we drafted Michael Irvin, but I wanted Barry Sanders or Deion Sanders during the Aikman draft and I didn't know a lot about Emmitt back then. Just seems like the guys I really wanted Jerry to draft he passed on them.

Bob Lilly comes to mind.

I remember i really wanted us to get Michael Jenkins and i was pumped when we got him. I also wanted Tyron Smith, and although i didn't think it was a realistic option, i really wanted Mo Claiborne so the trade was exciting.

Troy Aikman... Troy Aikman... Troy Aikman... then 1-15 happened.. I was like what... but to be honest, I was quite young, so I just followed the Cowboys no matter what. They could have drafted Jason Garrett number 1 and I'd be like, oh yeah... championship

How about players I never wanted to see in a Cowboys uniform? :D

  • Rod Hill - No one had ever heard of him.
  • Kevin Brooks - His highlight film during the draft was play after play of him getting pancaked by o-linemen.
  • Larry Bethea - Not sure what they saw in him.
  • Danny Noonan - Looked like Randy White but played (in college) like Betty White.
  • Shante Carver - Never draft a player with a girl's name in the 1st round.
These 1st round draft picks and more were the beginning of the end for Gil Brandt and the Dallas dynasty.

All these years later and I'll bet that feeling hasn't changed any.
No sir! I'm not a believer in this 1 person will put us over the top unless it's a super stud, and that would've put us over the top.

Troy Aikman. The draft was the only thing to look forward to after a 3-13 season.

Tony Dorsett
Troy Aikman
Emmitt Smith
Roy Williams
Jason Witten

David Buehler

I thought he was going to revolutionize the position. Place Kick, Punt coverage, Fullback/TE

What happened to him anyway?

None yet so far. A bunch of players that I'm really happy about, but none that I was targeting or had high hopes that we would grab him. Especially last year I wanted ANY of the DTs to come out, but there was a run on Tackles so that dream died pretty quick.

Wanted, but didn't hold out any hope of getting, Dez.
Had Kyle Wilber in my mock draft so was pretty pleased when he was drafted.

Wanted Roy Williams bad and was elated when we got him. Never wanted a player more than him.

Still might be the best college football player I have ever seen! He could literally take over a game as a safety, much like a Jordan or a Kobe. Amazing.

Really? There are 3 QBs rated above and beyond him in the Draft.

I respect the opinions of Todd McShay and Mel Kiper, but we all know that they've been wrong about players, especially quarterbacks in the past.

- Joey Harrington, David Carr, Ryan Leaf, Byron Leftwich, Matt Lienart, JaMarcus Russell, Kyle Boller, etc.

They didn't even have guys like Romo or Warner on their boards.

I'm strictly going by what I've seen on the football field and the amount of electricity and excitement Manziel would bring to this team. He's a natural leader with a tenacious nature...something this team has been missing for a VERY long time, Terrell Owens and Dez Bryant excluded.
