For the first time since 2008, somebody else will put together the Dallas Cowboys' NFL draft board. Will McClay, the assistant director of player personnel, will handle those duties this spring. Tom Ciskowski, the director of scouting, had produced the board the past few years but things moved into a different direction starting last year. McClay and Ciskowski split between handling pro and college duties. Ciskowski had been in charge of pro and college scouting, but the Cowboys wanted him to concentrate more on the college game.

McClay and Ciskowski split between handling pro and college duties. Ciskowski had been in charge of pro and college scouting, but the Cowboys wanted him to concentrate more on the college game.

Ciskowski is still a valued member of the front office and last year interviewed for the then-vacant general manager position in Indianapolis that eventually went to Ryan Grigson.

Being the Pro Player guy, he should know exactly what type of player fits the Cowboys schemes. He had to have been in constant contact with Marinelli as they were cycling through all of those DLinemen during the season.

The draft board was obviously not in sync with Marinelli last year based on the Floyd issue.

Soon Will will be calling plays, the way things are going here...

The switch last year had Ciskowski spending more time evaluating pro talent and McClay focusing on college talent. So it only makes sense that McClay sets up the draft board instead of Ciskowski.

The biggest change appears to be with McClay’s role.

Before, his title of director of football research meant he worked closely with the pro side of scouting. Now, McClay will be more involved in the day-to-day operations for both pro and college scouting.

“I’m excited about the faith and belief Jerry and Stephen have to put me in position like this,” McClay said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to work with them and Jason, Tom, Judd (Garrett) and all the scouts as we try and put the pieces together to get us where we want to go.

McClay is expected to have more communication with both Jerry and Stephen Jones in all personnel decisions.

Ciskowski will likely be on the road more, having a larger role in the college aspect of scouting and overseeing the draft process, which is a 365-day-a-year operation.

There are two men Jones is asking to elevate the Cowboys in 2014 in Will McClay, assistant director of player personnel and Tom Ciskowski, director of scouting.

McClay is in charge of finding pro players in free agency, evaluating the current roster, which is badly in need of an overhaul on defense, but salary cap restrictions make that difficult to do. And more importantly, McClay takes over this year as putting the draft board together. Ciskowski provides McClay and Jones with all the information necessary to make the draft selections.

Jones trusts these men with helping him make the final decisions. During the 2013 season, McClay was the point man in securing several players in free agency when injuries and poor play forced the Cowboys to look elsewhere for help.

Jones along with his son, vice president of player personnel Stephen Jones, believe in what McClay and his staff are doing.

what this guy going to do bring the top bring in the top Arena players

and what one year with Jacksonville - (2001) where his main job was to scout teams that Jacksonville did not play that year in attempt to advance scouting information

Oddly it appears to be the opposite, Clay concentrating on the pro personnel side will set the board.

Never have really been concerned about the inner workings of all this stuff, all that matters is the name that's called. To me it just creates useless second guessing about "following your own board" which is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of. If I get bad service from a business, I couldn't care less about all of the details that went into giving it to me. All that matters is the final product, and the fact that the business has to own that. You can put together the fanciest board in the NFL, but when it's seconds to go and you're on the clock, Jerry can snatch the mic and do whatever he wants.

McClay took on a larger role last year and has been moving to the lead personnel guy role.
This isn't a shock.

McClay has had a say in our collegiate scouting for longer than has been intimated.

Now he simply owns the board itself.

Frankly I have seen things go very well that McClay handles so am encouraged about this.

Ciskowski has been here since BP and drafting has been uneven.

Really love what McClay has done this yr. I could see TC getting the boot soon

I read this three times and not sure what it means
