No, it's luck. If they knew they would be that good they'd drafted them higher. If it was coaching, all of their late round picks would play well. All teams get lucky sometimes.

Funny how some teams get 'lucky' so many more times than the Cowboys over the last 15 years. Coincidence? Hardly.

I'm sure if the Seahawks had Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice healthy, Wilson would have better passing numbers. And that bigger pass threat would open up lanes for Marshawn Lynch even more.

This team would be even more of a terror than they already are had their top 2 receivers stayed healthy all year.

Yes, agreed. Their offense would have been way better with those 2 guys and they would have thrown the ball a good bit more. Doesn't matter though, fact is.. they didn't need to throw the ball a ton to win. That doesn't make Wilson a bus driver. A bus driver to me is a guy who simply isn't capable of throwing the ball often without screwing up. I see Wilson as being very capable.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you weren't being so ignorant to attribute winning overall/playoff performance to getting lucky on late round picks.

Wilson sure isn't elite but he sure is capable. And even at his age seems to be a leader. I hate the Seahawks but that one play Sunday where he was scrambling & completed that long pass was a WOW football play.

That would assume I attribute better drafting teams as being "lucky". Granted I'm sure the Seahawks didn't know how good Sherman would be when they drafted him. But the better teams seem to find quality throughout the draft, whereas more often than not we end up reaching, drafting for potential over production, drafting for special teams, etc, etc. etc.

And no, we really don't have a recent history of finding quality players or being "lucky" in the later rounds in recent history. In fact, we don't have much a history in the last 20 years of finding a lot of talent in the early rounds. Again, no coincidence.

A little good fortune like that, and our D would be greatly improved, while spending higher picks up front.

Pete Carrol, with secondary and defense background, has done a fantastic job in Seattle, but a little bit of luck in the late rounds makes a huge difference for a team.

BTW....Orlando Scandrick, best CB for Cowboys in 2013.....5th round pick.

Do you know what he was doing Monday besides dealing with all the crap, he was handing out blankets that he provide for homeless and needy, the guy does more in the community then 50% of the Cowboys and he is still on a rookie contract. I am a huge Cowboys fan but dude is one of those players that I would love to be on the Cowboys roster. So what he talks, no more then Irvin did back in the day

I am a firm believer that draft is not luck on most levels (injury maybe).
It's about scouting properly and knowing what kind of players and personalities fit what you are trying to build.

I'd agree, to a certain extent, RS. However, like a previous poster mentioned, if the Hawks knew those guys were gonna be that good, there's no way they wait until the 5th or 6th round to scoop them up.

I'll second that. The guy is in your face, but I generally believe he isn't a bad guy.

Call me crazy but I think it has alot to do with the staffs ability to develop these players. Every one of the guys they throw out there on D is intense and tough. Maxwell was their 4th corner that ended up starting the last 8 games opposite Sherman, its almost like you dont notice they have backups on the field. That's the mentality the staff carries to the players.

I think that's the case in most drafts. Players get drafted higher or lower based on less teams scouting, negatives in certain areas, lack of something, multiple reasons….. But you coach up players based on the strengths that fit your system, or sometimes other teams just miss and you hit..

Take a team like the steelers, they have drafted well for 25 years now. I admire how they continue to replenish talent through the draft.
The eagles is another team that had a stretch of sustainability through the draft. (mind you I loathe the steelers and eagles…steelers a bit more)
The draft is not an unproven commodity. Does it take some luck, and other teams not being as good at it as you? Sure, but if you are prepared and have scouts that see the emmanual sanders type players that are in your back yard, you will sustain your talent base.

coaching staffs that know how to put players in the best position to win… and having disciplined players.
Pats did this as well.

No, Wilson was NEVER a backup. He started from day one. He and Flynn competed and Wilson won.
