We all know (or should know) that Dallas cannot "do whatever they want in free agency".

There will be no Greg Hardy,

That being affirmed, I am fairly certain the Cowboys will sign some cheap players, a couple at least.

If they do not dump all their money at Hatcher, they will have to sign some bodies and also make it so they do not have glaring holes entering the draft.

Rotoworld had an article that named Falcons DT Corey Peters as a fit.

http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/46339/309/free-agency-fits?pg=1

Unfortunate thing for him is that he tore his Achilles in the final game of the season. I would as soon not bother.

The names I see that might be worth it and cheap enough are:

Bills DL Alex Carrington - has position flexibility. Does have injury issues and played in only a few games last season.

Colts ILB Pat Angerer - might be want a better chance to start elsewhere, but he is a solid middle linebacker that the Colts are not bringing back. With Lee's injury concerns, we have to have a good backup.

Bucs OLB Dekota Watson - flip flopped between OLB and end last year after losing his starting job.

Bears CB Kelvin Hayden - very experienced in the system having played in it in both Indianapolis and Chicago

There are some others I am discounting (the Bears two defensive linemen for example) mainly due to what I think will be will be an active market that we will not be able to be players in.

Curious to see what the opinions are on the realistic options are out there.

I don't even expect Greg Hardy to actually hit free agency. But you're right about the likelihood of seeing an active market. Last year was probably just the result of three years' stagnation in the salary cap. Now that we're looking at a sizable jump and teams have carried over enough money to burn, this year will probably be different.

I would add Major Wright to that list, knowing how this team thinks.

Jonathan Babineaux DT
Clinton McDonald DT
I have a feeling McDonald is the type of player that gets signed quickly and for more money than people think. He is young, and everyone will be running to try to catch Seahawks magic by overpaying free agents from the champions. It happens all the time.

Now Babineaux possibly. He has already got his big payday and given how poorly the Atlanta defense played last season he could have a low market value and be hanging around at the stage where we are likely to have enough money to play around with.

Another one I just thought of is Willie Young from Detroit and Marinelli should remember playing against him from the Bears. He seems like a "rushman".

I can see them getting some depth type players and see if they can push to start. Get the starters or eventual starters in the draft.
Possibly an OG but rather draft one, instead of going that route again, like Livings & Bernardeau.
I think Hardy gets the franchise tag.

I don't know he was on a cheap 1 year deal and was a backup but hard to say right now. Last year he was a RFA with a 7th rd tender

I like Clinton McDonald as a medium priced Free Agent. He was not the starter in Seattle but he played about 1/2 of the snaps, maybe more at the 3-tech. He won't be cheap, but he won't command top dollar either.

I would look at any players from the Bears that have experience with Marinelli. The DE/DT Wootten, the Safety, etc.. I'm against giving big money to any players over about 28, and it's not a need, but if Charles Tillman (age 33) was available for a low price, he would be a good guy to have on the roster. He is big and could probably play Safety or be a matchup guy at CB against big receivers.

In general, there have to be a large number of players available for DL between the minimum wage guys that the Cowboys signed during the season and Ware at 12M. It's probably better to have 2 guys at 6M or 3 at 4M, than Ware (12M) + Corvey Irvin (700k).

Re: Tillman, I agree. He'a an exception, and not the rule, for a player of his age, but I'd take him in a heartbeat.

(On Rod Marinelli) Charles Tillman: I wish he was still in Chicago. I would love to play for Rod again. Bar none, the best coach I've ever played for. He's helped me elevate my game. Rod is the best coach in the league, the best defensive coordinator in the game right now - Rod Marinelli. I love that guy. He's just an awesome coach, an awesome person and an awesome man. When you guys (Dallas) played us this year, I was looking for him on the sideline, I couldn't wait to give him a hug. When he stepped in the room, he commanded your attention. I miss him.

This is not a no-name, but I'll throw it out since he's past his prime and a player to get people talking, one way or another: what about Steve Smith from CAR if he's made available, as rumored? He'd be relatively expensive, but on a short-term basis. And he's got the kind of attitude fans love to see on the field. He can play on the perimeter like we need, absent Miles, and he's moved inside recently in CAR, too, and can play the slot. With all the WR options in VFA and the draft, the fact that CAR alone might let him go, he probably won't command as much as his name suggests.

Tyson Jackson (KC) could be our 1tech (pushing the pocket and absorbing blockers for Lee) and would come cheap. Leaving the 3 tech for the draft (and the more expensive position). Ward/Byrd are too expensive as FA Safeties but would like one of those two if the price eventually came down as FA progresses. Malcom Jenkins is another Safety that should get a look too and would be a cheaper option if they sign one in FA. Houston/McDonald would be too expensive but would keep an eye on their price range as well. Rinehard (G) could be added to the mix to compete with Leary/Mack but also has the health issues. He would be an upgrade over both though. Beason is the LB we hoped Carter can develop into but the 4-3 dictates that we really shouldn't be investing $ heavily on that position.

Tillman has said that he has no interest in playing safety.
