Good signing. Orton will retire after this year. We were supposedly interested in Weeden when he was drafted. If he shows anything this summer, we groom him as Orton's replacement. No bonus money. If he sucks, we probably carry just two QBs again.

It also costs a roster spot. It also costs time and practice reps and coaching that could go to a young player who could develop into something more than a 31 year old turnover machine.

I don't really care about the money, at some point we need to replace Romo and if Weedon is getting in the way of anyone in anyway that might develop into anything than its a bad idea.

Well, I see what you're saying, but in the offseason/preseason, there are plenty of reps to go around, and you actually want to take pressure of your starting QB. As for the idea of Weeden getting in the way, the contract is minimal, and doesn't tie Dallas into anything. If we pick up a young QB who needs the time and reps, and Weeden's not producing, then he's gone.

How do you groom, a 30yr old QB?

I agree you don't groom him but you do work with him. There are skill sets he has that a coaching staff can work with, he was projected as a 1st and or 2nd rd pick in the draft based on those skills. I don't know if he will improve or not but he at least gets this camp working with the coaches to show he belongs or not.

True. Mean time Orton is still with the team and has not retired. If he plans on remaining then Weeden would have to beat him out as the #2. If Dallas only carries 2 QB than Weeden will be released. I have not seen anything of a big signing bonus for Weeden so in the end if he does not cut it in camp Dallas can cut him loose no damage done.

I expect we did give him a smallish bonus -- Nothing wrong with carrying three if he shows some development.

Ultimately it is a garbage heap pickup -- a prospect you liked who didn't work out. Maybe he sucks -- maybe everyone sucked in Cleveland

Oh, I understand exactly why we're doing what we're doing. We don't have cap space, and it doesn't make sense to keep paying older players huge money. It's just that people are so caught up in the name. And they see other teams signing big names, and we're not, so it just adds to the ever-growing frustration.

At worst he's fodder. At best he's a capable backup.

Well if Wade Wilson can't get anything out of him nobody can.

Wilson may work well with him I don't know. Frankly Wilson has not had a lot of great QB to work with. Henson out of football before returning to football, Hutchinson same way. He did work with an UDFA who became a pretty darn good starter. So who knows.
