Murray will be too expensive to keep

If you look at what Murray will get on the open market, you can bet that he gets around 8 million per year from some team out there. That's entirely too expensive for a pass happy team in the Dallas Cowboys.

It'll be important at some point for us to try to maximize his value. Best option would be if we don't franchise Dez next year (meaning we've re-signed or traded him) is to find a trade market for Murray after franchising him.

I fully expect with the offensive line we have this year, that he is going to put up massive numbers. We could get a pretty considerate compensation in trading him. Probably not Trent Richardson value, but I wouldn't be surprised if we couldn't get a 2nd or 3rd for him, maybe even more than that if he has the productive year he is capable of.

I think we have a lot of running backs behind him that will be able to step up in his place now. Even Joseph Randle who were were all pretty down on is coming on stronger given the competition I suppose. Not sure whether I would trade Murray this year, but given the right price, that would be a possibility too.

But the fact is, this guy is gone next year, we shouldn't come up empty handed this time.

I am not buying here.

Murray hasn't played a full season yet in the NFL..

that's going on 4 years now..

He also had numerous problems staying healthy in his college career.

These are the facts.

So to have been named to the Pro Bowl and base that into an $8 mil contract is a huge stretch.

Besides..he made the Pro Bowl because the RB nominated was injured and opted out of the Pro Bowl.

Entrance DeMarco Murray.

That is a very low threshold to make the guy a multi-millionaire for life going forward.

I say wait and see what happens this year and don't oversell him too soon.

We've been down that road before with MBIII, Felix Jones and several others we invest in too soon and for too much.

So reel it in..let's enjoy the games ahead and let's wait for performance to preceded reward.

Tell that to Arian Foster. MB3 got paid, and Felix Jones never had the production that Murray had.

Chris Johnson is 28 and has had 6 straight 1000 yard seasons. He had only missed one game in 6 years.
He just signed for 4 mil/ year.

You asked

Chris Johnson wouldn't make anyone's Top 10 list after last year. Looked slow, lazy and just ineffective.

There was a reason he was a free agent.

I'm glad hoofbite responded before I did... Chris Johnson isn't anywhere close to the top 10 and hasn't been for years. Three straight pedestrian years cost Chris Johnson millions on his new contract. He has produced 1000 yard seasons, but because he is still given the rock ample enough times.

Chris Johnson - 11th in yards, 33rd in yards per attempt, 17th in rushes over 20 yards, 19th in touchdowns, 15th in yards per game, 10th in first downs....

Top 10 running back? Negative Ghost Rider.

The fact that Chris Johnson got 4 million in the market only strengthens my argument.

RB's are a dime a dozen these days. With a good, solid O-line, there are plenty of other options out there and/or yet to come. Unless said RB is top three, save the money and get more line help....on both sides.

Murray will only get about 4 million a year. Based on his injury history and the running back position becoming devalued, I do not see him breaking the bank. With limited cap space, I do not even think the Boys should offer him 4 mill a year as he is very injury prone. I hope they learned a little something off the Sean Lee debacle.

We currently have a corps of RBs that, to a man, have a history indicative of their being injury-prone. There's room for at least some measure of thought that the staff may be waiting to see how Murray holds up this year before tying up too much money in him. There's also a sticky issue about how much room will be left in the budget once Dez has been awarded his megabucks deal. Signing Murray might well be somewhat problematical if 2014 is as successful as anticipated.

If the team had a change of philosophy and decided to run a little more (say, 45% of the time or higher), then a RB to carry the load is important....this just isn't the case, and hasn't been for a few years now...plus, DM just can't stay on the field...you don't pay $8m for a guy that plays 75% of the time, even though he is effective when in there....I can actually see his touches going to the dunbars of the world (in quick outs, for example)....I like Murray a lot, but not if they have to break the bank to keep him...a 3 yr/$9m deal and sign me up....

If you have an offensive line like we think we have, it doesn't really matter much who you have back there. We're a pass first team, and that will continue to be our emphasis.

On Talkin' Cowboys, Broaddus was talking some nonsense about offering Murray 3 years for 9 mil and the rest of the crew argued that would be reasonable. I was surprised their number for him was so low, I think he's worth 4 - 4.5 a year, at least. Some team might overpay for him, but 9m for 3 years is a bit of an insult considering how good he's been.

Did we extend Felix? The MBIII deal was insane, and I was actually a fan of the guy. Jerry used to have a very tough time letting go, I think it's become less of an issue.

Maybe if we didn't have 100 million tied up in cornerbacks alone, it'd be easier to consider paying a RB.

I'm compelled to agree about our OL being outstanding but I'm not totally convinced it'll be quite as overwhelming as you seem to expect. Also our OC, Linehan, himself has stated and reiterated that this year, he'll be utilizing the running game with abandon. Considering the fact that he's been so adamant in stating that intention, I think I might be just a tad more hesitant to contradict him. He's been flexible in the past with his playcalling. Perhaps he'll be flexible and surprise all of us this year as well.

Smart man.

With the line we have, you could draft a high school nobody and he would have success.

I don't want to discredit Murray as if anyone can replace him but there's a lot of truth in what you said.

Even if the guy was a workhorse who never missed a game I wouldn't want to resign him. Add in his injury history and it's a no brainer.

I would seek another Murray type though. He's very well rounded and versatile. A 3 down back.

I'm sure that Linehan has been told to run the ball more his entire career, I don't know how much more he will run this year than before.

I don't doubt that Murray is in jeopardy of not being resigned in 2015. It's the notion that our OL will be so overwhelming that literally any RB would surely be outstanding behind it. They're unproven with a very young group that hasn't had a chance to get into sync as yet. No doubt they will at some point but it's very early yet. I would hope the RB we acquire in the event Murray isn't resigned would be someone of enough quality to make a very good line look like it's exactly that. Just any old RB wouldn't do, imho.
