Murray will be too expensive to keep

so you have one solid season... 1,125 yards is hardly impressive even with 2 games missed. all the sudden you go from injury prone running back with potential to 8m+ a year running back.. this is where GMs make huge mistakes. 4 year 20m with 10m guaranteed seems about the range I would pay.

Chris Johnson wouldn't make anyone's Top 10 list after last year. Looked slow, lazy and just ineffective.

There was a reason he was a free agent.

He played hurt all year. Had offseason surgery.
He also had a prohibitive contract. That and injury was why they let him go.

But I hear what you're saying.
6 years and missing only one game and getting a heavy workload each year. You have to think he's not the same player anymore.

Still, the year before last, when not playing injured, he had about 1500 yards from scrimmage and 4.5 yards per carry...so that would be top 10.

You realize that AP makes 13 million per year right? I think your who scale is skewed...

That deal was signed 3 years ago, and he is by far the best at his position. If he was on the market today, I doubt he would get 13M. LeSean McCoy is getting 9M, and Murray isn't anywhere close to him. He might get 5M/year from a stupid team, but I think it's likely he gets around 3-4M.

LeSean McCoy is getting 9 million per year... Again, you don't seem to know you're talking about.

I believe that thinking Murray is going to command $8 million average a year is being a bit overly optimistic. He has yet to be healthy for a full season and his numbers although good aren't near the caliber of the other guys on the above list. Now if Murray runs for 2100 yards this year then I might (only might) change my opinion. I don't see Murray on field for all 3 downs all the time. Dunbar is going to get a number of carries and betting that they rest Murray more than we believe.

Going back to the $8 million though, I wouldn't doubt that they might sign him to a 5 year deal but no longer and it could average $8 million a year but I believe the guarantee money wouldn't be more than $15 million and most of the dollars on the last two years of the contract so to me if he makes $15 million to say $20 million over the first 3 years of a contract, I believe we could easily live with that for a very good running back.

Chris Johnson - 11th in yards, 33rd in yards per attempt, 17th in rushes over 20 yards, 19th in touchdowns, 15th in yards per game, 10th in first downs....

Top 10 running back? Negative Ghost Rider.

The fact that Chris Johnson got 4 million in the market only strengthens my argument.

He played hurt almost the entire year. Torn meniscus in week 3 the be exact.
One bad year. That 3.9 ypc was really bad for him.
The year before he was 4.5 ypc and nearly 1500 yards.
But he has too many miles on the treads at this point.

So yes, at this stage of their careers, Murray would get the nod.

This is McCoy numbers, and he is arguably the best back... again.... arguably....
LeSean McCoy signed a 5 year / $45 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, including a $8,500,000 signing bonus, $20,765,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $9,000,000.

If you look at what Murray will get on the open market, you can bet that he gets around 8 million per year from some team out there. That's entirely too expensive for a pass happy team in the Dallas Cowboys.

It'll be important at some point for us to try to maximize his value. Best option would be if we don't franchise Dez next year (meaning we've re-signed or traded him) is to find a trade market for Murray after franchising him.

I fully expect with the offensive line we have this year, that he is going to put up massive numbers. We could get a pretty considerate compensation in trading him. Probably not Trent Richardson value, but I wouldn't be surprised if we couldn't get a 2nd or 3rd for him, maybe even more than that if he has the productive year he is capable of.

I think we have a lot of running backs behind him that will be able to step up in his place now. Even Joseph Randle who were were all pretty down on is coming on stronger given the competition I suppose. Not sure whether I would trade Murray this year, but given the right price, that would be a possibility too.

But the fact is, this guy is gone next year, we shouldn't come up empty handed this time.

Yet to play a full season. Command 8 million? I don't think so.

Yes, I edited my post right at the same time you quoted me. I was looking at base instead of combined. Would you like to make a signature wager on this matter?

Do you have contract numbers for other RBs to support your 8M number?

Edit: I see that you posted it in post #19 of this thread.

Well I think we need to see how he plays THIS year before we determine how hard he will be to keep. The market for running backs is rather low. Most organizations just wait until LaGarette Blount is a free agent and just use him lol.

You started a thread about the negotiations with Dez will be tough. Now this thread.

I have no clue what your intent is. Get people started talking? Hand wringing?

But surely no one knows at this point. Especially fans.
