I've thought it from the moment Brent retired and the team went mum on the topic.

I think this is an issue with obvious PR implications for the league. And everybody involved has been very careful in discussing the situation. It's playing to me like we're going down a path that was decided in advance. And what's the retirement gambit for if it doesn't let them make the decision based on some precedent or interpretation they identified in advance? That's not something Brent's agent is going to tell him to do, otherwise.

Now, they leak that the meeting went well. Let that simmer for a few days, and make their announcement. It might not be two-games-or-less light, but it will be pretty light. Then they'll work the rehabilitation and redemption angle in Dallas as long as Brent can stay clean.

I'm sure that's how the Cowboys hope it will all play out, but I don't think that means Goodell will play along.

And I seriously doubt Brent's "retirement" was done knowing Goodell would go lighter on him if he did it. Probably more of a hope.

Also, haven't all the "leaks" about it going well come from Mickey? Last night on the pregame Jerry said he didn't know and hadn't heard anything yet.

The precedent has been set. I'm not looking for special treatment on account of Go Cowboys!.

Nor...for the record, is anybody in this thread, I don't think.

But, because it's fun to say, go Cowboys.

It's not about hope. It's about expectations. Let me ask you this, then: what about the way any if this has gone down suggests to you that Brent's been acting without guidance or that a long suspension is likely? It's pretty much played out just as out legally-inclined posters suggested it would from the outset, including the trial and sentencing.

Well then Brent will be suspended for a year just like Stallworth was and everybody will agree it was a just ruling.

That's settled.

I like Brent (met much worse) and his football ability, but come on...at least another team for people to feel better about it;)

What "precedent?" Stallworth's case is distinguishable because Brent has already missed a season because of the case. Vick didn't get a suspension past his sentence.

Doesnt matter. Stallworth served a year's suspension for his conviction. Brent should get the same.

Acting without guidance? So you think the league has been in on this from the very start?

I think he "retired" because he was going to jail for a while and he couldn't play anyway. It was a no-risk PR ploy. I seriously doubt Goodell advised him, "Hey Josh, retire now and I'll go lighter on you if and when you ever are able to play again."

Some rumors say the retirement could serve as the suspension and he may be able to jump right in. Cant really blame the Cowboys for doing their due diligence and preemptively putting him in programs that should be favorable to him getting reinstated. Precedents have been set for reinstatement after this sort of thing and they got out in front of it. Brent will live with and carry the responsibility for his best friends death for the rest of his life. I hope he is able to get his life on track and use this tragedy to educate others.

Of course it matters. The law isn't black and white.

Good thing he didn't test positive for MJ (loser)...wait...RKG:rolleyes: It becomes too easy at this point. We would sign the old school "White House" if it meant winning again. You know they liked to play football (of all sports! strategery);)

This is what I was going to say, which isn't surprising, as we've been down that road before. But, then, I was surprised by Goodell's decision in the Stallworth case, too.

Of course there's a chance of this happening. Despite RS's tunnel vision, the league has always viewed time served I'm jail/handling a legal matter as equivalent to a suspension.

I think the Cowboys consulted with the league regarding the best way to handle a situation with significant PR implications, yes. And that the parties decided the retirement route was the best route to take. I expect that move to feature somewhat significantly in the decision that comes down, though I'm not sure how it does.

And I don't think that means anything is rigged, or that anything sneaky is going down. I think everybody involved is being careful about a delicate story.

For a prospective NT in a 4-3 of a rebuilding D. Why...

Well, the football side is another matter entirely. I'm just commenting on how it looks like this case has been handled from the outside.

Though I do think Brent's a better player in a 4-3 one-tech role than he was in the 3-4.

To go to these lengths for such an average player who disgraced this team the way he did? Irvin did cocaine for crying out loud...5 game suspension. HOF player. We have to go to these lengths for a starting 1 tech in this D? Jeebuz.

Also, he'll be coming in to a completely different scheme. So along with getting into football shape, he has to learn marinelli's 2014 tampa 2. He doesnt have an easy road, but he has a rare opportunity for a second chance of a lifetime.
