With Romo and the starters, we saw an offensive performance we have not seen in a long time. Namely, the offensive play calling was outstanding. We've heard about their commitment to running the ball and they showed a better package of running plays than we have previously seen. Less predictable in formation and type. We saw deep shots down the field (Terrance almost had a huge play if not for being under thrown). A screen play- yes that was so wide open that the pulling line had no one to hit for 15 yards (Murray and Martin will work that out). The approach was different and outstanding. I credit Linehan.

Some might argue that Dallas did not have the line to do this previously and Garret was doing the best he could with what he had but I would say the offensive philosophy is different. They are pounding the ball and threatening the deep half not taking what the D gives you but dictating and misdirecting.

Comments:

Minter - on the first drive the guy was getting rolled when the Ravens drove down running the ball and punched it in. Give the coaches and Minter credit for adjusting and bouncing back. He's not a 1 but obviously showed penetrating ability that we have not seen from others on DL.

Ryan Williams- amazing vision and burst. Terrible at pass protection. It will be interesting to see who makes it . Randle is a better blocker but does not have the same potential.

Jamar Newsome- they won't be able to sneak him on the practice squad nor should they cut him like Jimmy Smith. A player.

Vaughn- something about his ball and release that looks polished, accurate and natural. Looking at his numbers and offense in College, the guy can spin it. I would keep him as a third.

The defensive could be much better by week 1 and by week 8 or 9 the whole team could be much improved. This team if Romo can stay healthy is playoff bound.

Newsome is not a PS eligible player. I'd like to hear your 53 if you think we can keep Vaughan and Newsome.

Yes, I much more enjoyed seeing him calling plays to Garrett. Good the see so e screens.

Ilike your thoughts but as you wrote some will point to the weak offensive line for the play calling and I am one of those.

He's not a 1 but obviously showed penetrating ability that we have not seen from others on DL. - My thoughts exactly. At first I was like, "why did we bring in this scrub" and then I was like, "Holy crap!! I'm glad we got him.". :D

Ryan Williams- amazing vision and burst. Terrible at pass protection. It will be interesting to see who makes it . Randle is a better blocker but does not have the same potential. - and that's a shame. Williams has much better burst but if the team can't trust you to protect the qb, there isn't much room for you. I don't think he will stick even tho he is better than Randle.

Jamar Newsome- they won't be able to sneak him on the practice squad nor should they cut him like Jimmy Smith. A player. - was blanketed by 3rd string corner even tho he came down with the ball. I don't think it translates well to sticking on the 53 but he has 3 more games to prove me wrong. I think Boyd and Byrd have a better push at the 6th spot.

Vaughn- something about his ball and release that looks polished, accurate and natural. Looking at his numbers and offense in College, the guy can spin it. I would keep him as a third. - This kid has shown more ability than any 3rd we've had here in 15 years. He needs to stay on the 53 because he's just that good. He may not be better than Weeden now but he will be by middle of the season. I would rather lose the 4th rb than him.

The defensive could be much better by week 1 and by week 8 or 9 the whole team could be much improved. This team if Romo can stay healthy is playoff bound. - Much as i would love for this to be true, the defense has huge gaping holes. Crossing my fingers and toes tho :D

It wasn't just the play calling but the execution. We've run those bubble screens in the past but we just didn't seem to execute them very well.

Love the analysis. I just don't agree about the defense. I want to stay on the record as saying that this defense and its approach needs to change. Find out what it can do well and force the issue. I'm waiting for a new idea to come through, perhaps a young defensive coordinator that takes the league by storm. Wishful thinking I know, but I want to be something different and something that the rest of the league wants to copy.

I agree. I think Linehan's playcalling is very good and dynamic, compared to the Jason Garrett offense.

Yes, looked crisp for once. Flowed smoothly. I think if not for the bad exchange between Romo & Murray, that drive would have turned out much different.
But that's why they play these games, to get that kind of stuff worked out.

What excites me is that normally, they don't have a very diverse play selection in the preseason. I think the best is yet to come.

Garrett just sucked. You don't constantly talk about BPA when drafting and acting shocked when you go OL, if you thought the OL was holding your play-calling back.

If it was OL, JJ would have kept JG as play-caller, saying he finally got the OL he needed.

I see this as a strictly cosmetic change used to distract the masses. It does not improve the team whatsoever.

Yes....because if there's one thing we all can agree on it's that Jerry Jones always makes the right decision.

yup, and gotta figure we are just seeing a tiny bit of it. He seems to be doing the little things (Like Sean Payton) that don't let the defense dictate down to the last few seconds of the playclock what Kill Kill Kill switch Romo is forced to as they jump the 8th guy in and out of the box.............I'd like to think Dallas will be able to up-tempo the offense, maybe even more no-huddle as they get comfortable in Linehans offense, which will only accentuate keeping defenses on their heels.

I haven't gotten to see either preseason game instead only listening to bits and pieces of both games so I might be wrong. But I remember a couple times where we ran for a few plays and then followed it up with play-action which excites me.
