With Romo and the starters, we saw an offensive performance we have not seen in a long time. Namely, the offensive play calling was outstanding. We've heard about their commitment to running the ball and they showed a better package of running plays than we have previously seen. Less predictable in formation and type. We saw deep shots down the field (Terrance almost had a huge play if not for being under thrown). A screen play- yes that was so wide open that the pulling line had no one to hit for 15 yards (Murray and Martin will work that out). The approach was different and outstanding. I credit Linehan.

Some might argue that Dallas did not have the line to do this previously and Garret was doing the best he could with what he had but I would say the offensive philosophy is different. They are pounding the ball and threatening the deep half not taking what the D gives you but dictating and misdirecting.

Comments:

Minter - on the first drive the guy was getting rolled when the Ravens drove down running the ball and punched it in. Give the coaches and Minter credit for adjusting and bouncing back. He's not a 1 but obviously showed penetrating ability that we have not seen from others on DL.

Ryan Williams- amazing vision and burst. Terrible at pass protection. It will be interesting to see who makes it . Randle is a better blocker but does not have the same potential.

Jamar Newsome- they won't be able to sneak him on the practice squad nor should they cut him like Jimmy Smith. A player.

Vaughn- something about his ball and release that looks polished, accurate and natural. Looking at his numbers and offense in College, the guy can spin it. I would keep him as a third.

The defensive could be much better by week 1 and by week 8 or 9 the whole team could be much improved. This team if Romo can stay healthy is playoff bound.

Not sure how we can draw conclusions on Linehan's playcalling in a preseason game. It's too bad Williams can't pass block because he's clearly a superior runner to Randle. I would keep Newsome on the 53 and take my chances putting Vaughn on the PS. Need to see more from Minter. He flashed on some good plays late but was almost as spectacularly getting mollywhopped by the Ravens OL earlier in the game.

It's early, but I like what I've seen so far and liked what he did in DET.

Yes....because if there's one thing we all can agree on it's that Jerry Jones always makes the right decision.

You just can't help yourself bro.

Every thread that is something positive, you cry about Jerry, and have to be the first to talk about him negatively.

If it's a thread or post about jerry overall you can bet you will make your guest appearance.

It's like once you see his name you get all excited.

Now that we have a more creative OC, more ppl realize how dull JG's offense was. Instead of just throwing stats out there, like "his offense was ranked 3rd in the league last year!" If you watched games you knew his offense was crap. Evidenced by the 0-16 streak of failed 3rd down conversion attempts.

I keep wondering where in the world the idea came from that JG was some kind of offensive guru.

The playcalling here has just been so bad that it will be hard for us to not see some type of improvement.

IMO, Linehan's job is simple. Feed the rock to Dez, and work everything else off of that threat.
Most explosive (dynamic) offenses have something that defenses can't keep in check.... no matter what they try and scheme. If the defense KNOWs, and you are still successful, that is deflating to the opponent and it really keeps them on their proverbial heels. This connection will open up Linehan's playbook. I'm excited about his options!!
I.e...Running becomes easier, establishing control at the line of scrimmage will be easier.... etc.

I'm in a positive mood about our offense.... GO COWBOYS!!!

I believe it was Jerry and his comments who set up those expectations when he first signed Garrett. But staying on topic, Linehan has been impressive so far, in terms of sticking to his stated philosophy of running when we want not when teams force us to and making our skill positions more multiple and less predictable and dictating on O (as opposed to old philosophy of taking what they give us).

I've always said to myself when I see the offensive rankings thrown out there for support of his ability, if he was so good, why have we had two different playcallers the past two years? I stand on my belief that Garrett has not earned a single thing given to him since he's been here including his initial hiring, has not brought anything tangible (tangible defined as easily identified and quantifiable by an objective observer, not somebody's interpretation) to this team since his arrival. Linehan's playcalling really brings home the stark contrast of someone who has ideas about what works (Garrett) and someone who has a successful system that he can tailor to his personnel (Linehan). As for the OL excuses, the execution excuses, the injury excuses, this is what they are - excuses. Again, if it wasn't about Garrett's failure, he would still be calling plays. Because no matter what Jerry says today, when he hired Garrett, he believed in his ability to call plays. He wanted him to call plays. Years of failure has brought us to Linehan calling plays, period. Damn the stats. As an aside, what a difference watching the sideline shots of the two coaches managing the games - Harbaugh working the refs, coaching his players as they walk off the field - offensive and defensive players. Garrett ear to ear grin after Dez's TD and arguing (seemingly) the instant replay? Otherwise... impartial observer?

Last night his offense looked good.

A lot less labored, smoother and much more aggressive than what Callahan peddled out. Or Garrett for that matter.

I see this as a strictly cosmetic change used to distract the masses. It does not improve the team whatsoever.

You know, every so often you can come up with some pretty good "stuff", but the vast majority of your "stuff" is negative, negative, negative, and to me, anyway, tends to get old quick. Really like ya, but too much negativity wears on ya! Thanks, mods, for the ignore function!

Good play calling = plays that work

Bad play calling = plays that fail

I love that people are pointing out what is perceived as an improvement in play calling during a game where the team didn't game plan. Makes all the sense in the world.

If the media wasn't so biased, they would every now and then mention how we went undefeated in the NFC East last year. That's a start if you want to talk about playoff (insert Herm Edwards voice)

They lost to the Eagles in the last game of the season to lose the division.

Not a case of media bias.

I don't think many people here, even Garrett supporters, liked his offense very much. I saw a ton of posters that wanted more creativity, more screens, a better pace and to get rid of that getting to line slow and milking the play clock to see what the defense was going to do. Teams have been saying for years that they our calls and plays before we ran them.

I'm not saying Linehan is a miracle worker, but just getting away from the old sets and calls should help a lot. He was very pass happy in DET, so the guys that want to run it a lot more may not like him.

My grandmother could have called plays better than Garrett. And she wasn't even from this country and didn't know what football was. Even if Linehan turns out to be average or good, we are better than where we were. Romo just masked this incompetent clown for years.
