I'm encouraged by what I saw against the Ravens. However, the real test will come in the regular season. Dez will be doubled more than he was in that game. However, Linehan likely will utilize every trick in his bag that he's holding back now because its preseason. Should be fun to watch. I have high hopes!

With Romo and the starters, we saw an offensive performance we have not seen in a long time. Namely, the offensive play calling was outstanding. We've heard about their commitment to running the ball and they showed a better package of running plays than we have previously seen. Less predictable in formation and type. We saw deep shots down the field (Terrance almost had a huge play if not for being under thrown). A screen play- yes that was so wide open that the pulling line had no one to hit for 15 yards (Murray and Martin will work that out). The approach was different and outstanding. I credit Linehan.

Some might argue that Dallas did not have the line to do this previously and Garret was doing the best he could with what he had but I would say the offensive philosophy is different. They are pounding the ball and threatening the deep half not taking what the D gives you but dictating and misdirecting.

Comments:

Minter - on the first drive the guy was getting rolled when the Ravens drove down running the ball and punched it in. Give the coaches and Minter credit for adjusting and bouncing back. He's not a 1 but obviously showed penetrating ability that we have not seen from others on DL.

Ryan Williams- amazing vision and burst. Terrible at pass protection. It will be interesting to see who makes it . Randle is a better blocker but does not have the same potential.

Jamar Newsome- they won't be able to sneak him on the practice squad nor should they cut him like Jimmy Smith. A player.

Vaughn- something about his ball and release that looks polished, accurate and natural. Looking at his numbers and offense in College, the guy can spin it. I would keep him as a third.

The defensive could be much better by week 1 and by week 8 or 9 the whole team could be much improved. This team if Romo can stay healthy is playoff bound.

well, head coaches are only as good as their staff. you see that Jimmy and Parcells could not duplicate their success without the same staff or a staff that was equal.

Agree as well.

It's early but it looks like we have a real play caller for the first time in years.

Jason Garrett actually being stripped of his playcalling is the best offseason move we made.

You people still insist that Garrett had the play calling taken from him. He has been trying to hand the play calling to someone since the offseason after he took over for phillips. He tried to hire the HC for the University of Pittsburgh, who at that time was the OC for Wisconsin. Also Jerry did not want him to give up the play calling. Then after the 12 season Jerry changed his mind but Garrett had been wanting to hire an Oc, so he was never stripped, it was freely given away

Love the analysis. I just don't agree about the defense. I want to stay on the record as saying that this defense and its approach needs to change. Find out what it can do well and force the issue. I'm waiting for a new idea to come through, perhaps a young defensive coordinator that takes the league by storm. Wishful thinking I know, but I want to be something different and something that the rest of the league wants to copy.

That's all well and good, but defensive schemes are pretty much basic football at this point in time, reacting to the offense that has more dynamic changes simply due to super stars emerging each year. Peyton Manning commands a different defense than Mike Vick. Dez Bryant is going to demand a different defense than a run of the mill receiver.

A lot of times last year the offense looked like a Chinese fire drill with Romo having to tell guys where to line up and it seemed like they were lucky to get the ball snapped before the play clock ran down. Against the Ravens they looked like they knew what they were doing.

I've always said to myself when I see the offensive rankings thrown out there for support of his ability, if he was so good, why have we had two different playcallers the past two years? I stand on my belief that Garrett has not earned a single thing given to him since he's been here including his initial hiring, has not brought anything tangible (tangible defined as easily identified and quantifiable by an objective observer, not somebody's interpretation) to this team since his arrival. Linehan's playcalling really brings home the stark contrast of someone who has ideas about what works (Garrett) and someone who has a successful system that he can tailor to his personnel (Linehan). As for the OL excuses, the execution excuses, the injury excuses, this is what they are - excuses. Again, if it wasn't about Garrett's failure, he would still be calling plays. Because no matter what Jerry says today, when he hired Garrett, he believed in his ability to call plays. He wanted him to call plays. Years of failure has brought us to Linehan calling plays, period. Damn the stats. As an aside, what a difference watching the sideline shots of the two coaches managing the games - Harbaugh working the refs, coaching his players as they walk off the field - offensive and defensive players. Garrett ear to ear grin after Dez's TD and arguing (seemingly) the instant replay? Otherwise... impartial observer?

In this post you ask for a tangible benefit of JG's offensive contribution to this team.

In the next breath you say throw out the stats. You know stats. Those tangible objective things.

You serious bro?

I'm really going to miss the 1/2 yard route to Witten on 3rd and 7.

Yep the old give up play where Witten runs a little more than a yard and then runs towards the sidelines catches and gets pushed out of bounds. Yeah I'll miss that too.

Good play calling = plays that work

Bad play calling = plays that fail

I love that people are pointing out what is perceived as an improvement in play calling during a game where the team didn't game plan. Makes all the sense in the world.

I think you may be the most under rated poster on this forum.

This might be true to the average fan or the media.

you have to admit that we do have better personnel and that goes a long way towards doing things you like to do. a lot comes down to dwn and distance. if you are successful in running on 1st and 2nd downs, then the defense is on the defense of trying to figure out if you are running or passing, which makes it easier. if you can effectively run the ball, the play action works better and you can take shots down field. plus we have a deep group of WRs, better than what I remember having around here in a long time. talent goes a long way towards your success. just see the defense.

I guess Wade Wilson just went to the top of the booth and Jason Garrett took back the head-set to relay the plays, because Garrett always wanted to give up control of the offese...

Got to love how the story keeps changing for this incompetent clown. I remember when they were blaming Dez for not being able to run Garrett's 'complicated' play-book properly.

Criticism of play calling is a fan crutch. You saw it when Callahan arrived. He was going to have all the answers. Except he didn't. We needed better players.

The OL has been revamped. As long as the QB is fine and there's not a rash of injuries you'll see a very potent offense and fans will rejoice, in the short term, over the genius that is Scott Linehan. A guy who would absolutely not have done any better than Callahan before him or Garrett with that same group of players. This is a run of the mill OC here. He's a savior of nothing.

It's complete nonsense. Don't waste a second of your time focusing on a rearranged Titanic deck chair. It addresses nothing that ails this team.

Exactly my point. I would just like to see something unexpected to happen. Perhaps it's not even possible at this point, but I refuse to think that.

You just can't help yourself bro.

Every thread that is something positive, you cry about Jerry, and have to be the first to talk about him negatively.

If it's a thread or post about jerry overall you can bet you will make your guest appearance.

It's like once you see his name you get all excited.

Stop responding to him and perhaps he will get the message that not all of us fans are as miserable as he is.

You can count on him being negative all the time...don't get hooked.

So offensive coordinators don't matter? Someone should tell the owners--they are getting ripped off.

Why try logic with that guy? Just go about your happy business and not dealing with him will make your life so much better.

Going from Garrett to Callahan to Linehan doesn't matter because any and all issues we've had on offense over recent years has been due to a lack of talent.

You want to pretend the talent's always been there. So you blame the play caller.
