Rock music is dead!

The Strokes, Muse, The Killers, Deftones, Arctic Monkeys, 311, White Stripes, Modest Mouse...all off the top of my head and very much alive.

KISS sucked anyway

If any of the bands you mentioned are still played on the radio in 20+ years, I will eat my hat and jog around the block naked. That is if im still alive.

Musically KISS did suck as their material couldn't hold a candle to that of the Beatles, Zep, The Who, Rush and many others. They had a fairly unique idea at the time which was a over the top stage show and identities that made them larger then life. Their music however was somewhat rudimentary.

For me in my mid 20's pop is Michael Jackson stuff. The 80's videos I see. That is pop. He was brilliant at what he did which was pop!

Pop has about killed country. Way too many pop influences in country now.

Agreed 100%
When l listen to current country artists I am hearing a small bit of country mixed in with some pop then a fiddle solo thrown in to seem credible. Most of it stinks

When I first saw the thread title, I thought "The Rock" was dead. He's way too young for that, lol.

This struck me as one of those, 'Put a catchy title on something to get hits' move. From what I read, Simmons was saying that the industry that used to support and allow rock bands to grow has withered away. That the profession has become much more difficult to advance in. I'd kinda agree. Movie and TV soundtracks or affiliated songs are the way to go now, imo.

He was correct. The way Van Halen came to fruition was starting out playing at school dances then bars then more well known bars and then a residency at Gazarris and playing the Pasadena civic center then on to the world stage so to speak. That type of thing we will never see again.
Thanks American Idol......

Without reading what he said, you're probably right.

But there are still a lot of great bands out there making "rock" - or whatever you want to call it. Times change and so does entertainment. If Simmons doesn't want to call it rock, so be it.

Rock music has taken a change for the worst.

I don't enjoy these 3 minute songs that has a a couple lines, chorus, couple lines, chorus, short line, long chorus, done.

I doubt we'll see creative music artists like Zeppelin anymore that you can just get lost in a song with so much greatness going on all at 1 time.

Have not heard anything from tool in some time.

Liked them when they came out, they were a little different...kind of reminded me of a Pink Floyd vibe for rock/industrial type vibe.

Agreed. They had some good stuff.

Their version of No Quarter is just epic.

When Cobain died, that also had a big influence on the demise of rock.

They didn't play Nirvana on ROCK stations before he died and most didn't play him for about 3-4 years AFTER his death.

Rock is essentially a (thankfully) harder version of Pop but it's not dead just very slowly evolving.

I still the the top 25 rock songs of itunes every now and then and it has become more eclectic but it's not terrible.

As to the who is gonna make stuff.... Most music that stands the test of time takes years to be fully recognized.
Part of the issue is how music is bought and sold.
Old people like rock but old people are terrible behind in technology.

I have a Nirvana ring tone fwiw.

I am not the biggest fan of Pearl Jam...I would say of the big seattle grunge bands they would have been at the bottom of my list.

However both pearl jam and Alice in Chains still put out quality CDs and still get radio air play in my neck of the woods.

I still use Aenima for my workouts.
Along with Led Zep, Pantera, Godsmack, House of the Rising Sun, Rob Zombie, Rolling Stones, Billy Idol.

I went to see Kiss in the '80s just because they played down the road from my apt. It was 20 years later before I admitted it to any of my buds I grew up with and they still laughed at me.

Glad Tool was mentioned. Really hope to hear something from them soon. Have always thought of them as a next-gen Pink Floyd.

Surprised the Foo Fighters haven't been mentioned.

One thing I've noticed is that the classic rock bands that are still in the business don't really have an outlet anymore. Tom Petty's new CD is really good, but if you're not a Sirius subscriber, I don't know that you ever hear it. The local classic rock stations in my area don't play it. Sirius dedicated a channel to him upon release since he has a relationship with his Buried Treasure show. If you haven't heard it, give it a listen.
