Keeping Melton won't be difficult

Practice what you're preaching.

You're the guy talking about spreading out $9 million over 3 years adding to a salary already at $7.5 million!

And, again, show me more examples where defensive tackles are averaging over $8 million per year. After all, you were claiming that to be below rate.

Spreading out that 9 million over 3 years doesn't make 7.5 million a year look bad, again like I said that average is already a lot lower than the top money out there. Every year the value of a dollar in the NFL is deflated with the increased salary cap. This means that 9 million in year 1 is more than 9 million in year 2.

Gerald McCoy - 15.86 million per year
Ndamukong Suh - 12.9 million per year
Haloti Ngata - 12.131 million per year
Geno Atkins - 10.66 million per year
Vince Wilfork - 7.6 million per year
Kyle Williams - 7.287 million per year
Henry Melton - 6.875 million per year.

I agree how the contract is structured matters. Dallas can avoid the 9 mill next season which was lessen the cap hit for 2015 but in the end the player will still get the overall amount of the contract.

And if you saw what I said in the OP, is that it was exactly the same as Hatcher, and that if we didn't want to eat that full 9 million next year, we could more than move some of it over the last two years of his deal.

I agree, I would say what gets done is largely based on what he does for the remainder of the season. Dallas is getting from Melton what many of us were hoping to see but he has to continue to play at this level he has to keep this level of play going. If he can do that then I think there is a good chance he can get a deal in Dallas.

I never said it was a done deal I said Dallas if they choose can restructure the contract, I think much of that will depend on how he finishes the season. He is just now playing as many had hoped for and should he continue to produce as he has as of late then yes I think there is a good chance Dallas will do what they can to bring him back

A perfectly reasonable position.

I agree.

If Marinelli is here next year, Melton will want to stay. So just restructure the contract.

We're getting our bargain, prove-it year from Melton now. If we keep the deal, it's $24 million over 3 years or $8 million per.

I don't see how you can pay Melton $8 million per year and think of letting the NFL's leading rusher walk because he won't take $6 million or less.

How would you like to reorganize the $9 million guaranteed and then $7.5 million and $7.5 million?

Only so many ways you can shuffle around $24 million he's owed...

You're leaving one factor out of the equation, stash. The escalation of the salary cap. Let's be honest, this isn't OUR money and as fans we could care less about what he's actually taking home. Our real concern, as fans, is the percentage of the salary cap that a particular player is going to consume. In 2016 or 2017, 7.5 Million isn't really going to have the same impact as 7.5 million does today. Hell, to sweeten the pot Dallas could add more performance based incentives in those years to give him incentive to restructure the deal. If he actually reaches those escalators then everyone is happy, anyway.

I'd probably sign murray for 6 million a year. Getting much higher than that though in a deep running back market just isn't wise.

RB is one of the most injured positions in football, and one with the least amount of tread.

It's not just how much you are paying x player but how much you would pay their replacement and how well that replacement would produce.

I think we can get someone for 6 or so million who can produce just as well as Murray behind this line...

And on that same note, where do ALL contracts trend? Upwards.

I'd be willing to bet that 90% of the players under contract now and signed over the next year will also have contracts trending upwards.

That increased cap room has already been factored in, as it always is.

I think Melton is playing great and I'd love to have him back.

I'm just not sure I'd love it at $8 million per year...

Maybe so, but conversely, what if we let Melton go and gave the starting 3-tech spot to Tyrone Crawford? Possibly approaching him early about a contract extension? Maybe in the $5 million per year range?

Then we could use a draft pick or two on more defensive tackles and keep the cap money to resign other positions?

Which is EXACTLY why you retain him NOW. His price tag (or anyone else' that we sign to replace him) isn't going to be any cheaper in 2016 or 2017.

I've read that by restructuring a few contracts, they can create over 50 million in cap space. With the window closing on Romo's career and the team being so good this year, I think Jerry and Stephen will go "all in" this offseason.

1. Restructure $15 million of Romo's $17 million into a restructure bonus

2. Restructure $10 million of Tyron Smith's salary into a restructure bonus
3. Make Brandon Carr a June 1st cut.

These 3 moves clear over 33 million in cap space.

I wouldn't restructure romo again just going to put us in a bind in the future. Just start biting the bullet now... better then biting a slug later.

cap purgatory with very talented players I can deal with, Cap hell I would rather stay out of and of course cap heaven with nothing but JAGS and 500 or less record not interested. lol

"Cap heaven" is Denvers blue print, seems to work well.

Yeah, and it's once again kicking the can down the road and guaranteeing money. And there's no guarantee Melton will be as hungry once he gets big money guaranteed.

Fortunately, we can watch the season play out and decide what to do after it's over.

At some point you have to pay players.

I don't think that would be wise. It's a talent acquisition business. You don't want to let good players go for nothing. The dude is a young pro bowl caliber defensive tackle. They don't grow on trees.

That isn't the case. Contracts are cyclical. Sometimes they are up, and sometimes they are down. Overall they might have an upward trend, but year to year they certainly can dip.

Let's see if it's decided that he's "Pro Bowl caliber" after the season.

You know as well as I do, the vast majority trend upwards. If you want to show me specific examples otherwise with this team, it would be great for the conversation.

Romo's contract was made to restructure. There is no future beyond the few remaining years of his career. When Romo retires, then you "bite the slug".................go 3-13 and draft his replacement.
