They needed it just to get back under the cap. There will be no big signings until they restructure Romo.

Bingo. After tendering Jones and Dunbar, they were something like $2.7 million over the cap. This frees up enough money to sign the rookie draft class and have the usual cap cushion going into the season. There is zero money to sign a single free agent right now without more moves.

Frees up $8M in cap room

They have already made it clear that they won't be going after the top free-Agents. Stephen Jones said it this past week. they don't need to open any cap space, because we don't need to do it to bring in more low price scrubs. we have enough of those kind of guys on the team now. only hope is the Draft.

It's kind of nice having a FO that does what it says.

Need to replace parnell, murray, carter, mcclain and moore so far. Going to be real tough. forgot we got rivers so we still need 1 lber.

We're not even talking about big names. We still need 2 LBers, a swing OT, a WR5/KR, a SDE, 1T DT and a CB

Then we have the Draft, the full 53, the practice squad, IR guys and a little cushion for the season. Not re-doing Romo should not be an option.

Re-doing Carr's contract should also help.

But I think we definitely have enough money in FA to retain Durant, pick up a SDE and a DT if we can restructure Carr's contract. And quite possibly retain McClain at MLB too.

In the Draft, we can pick up another OT, CB, RB, DL, and LB.

It's for the rookie draft class.

They don't sign the rookies until July. It's only about 2M to sign the rookies because it's only the incremental cost of replacing the lowest paid players of the top 51 with the rookies. Normally only 4th round and higher picks make more than the lowest paid existing players on the roster.

Again, as I stated earlier, this gives them money for the rookie draft class ($2M) plus the usual cap cushion going into the season ($3.5 or so). Where you guys think the money to sign Murray or Hardy is coming from aside from any future moves is beyond me.

I wouldn't be surprised if they restructured the guaranteed portion of Romo's contract ($7.5 million this year) as a last-ditch effort after being unable to sign Dez long term. It's not ideal, but it's their only good option at this point and they were going to pay it anyway. It's not like they need to eat the money for negotiating leverage next year like they did with Brandon Carr's 2014 salary.

Spotrac had us at 3.3m under before the tyron restructure and Free and Rivers signing.
