this contract is genius. you have a guy who has incentives to be a machine. and if it falters, it barely costs us anything.

cowboys are on the right path. now lets nail the draft.

I don't think he ever gets more than 4 years. He won't get Suh or Watt money no matter how many sacks he gets.

I think him and his agent disagree. Regardless they sure as heck will get more than what anyone, including Jerry, would guarantee them now.

No one was knocking down the door this year, he is still toxic. That is why Dallas got such a favorable deal. One year won't wash all the supposed dirt away. If it was weed or steroids maybe, but the DV issue is a different animal. I think it's bull myself, but the League has been very proactive on this issue.

There's also the possibility that this contract can be changed mid-season. The way it's structured, it protects Dallas from potential league issues. This is very good since we don't know what will happen with that. The suspension could be from zero to six games. By the time the season gets underway, all the fall out from this will be settled. If he's playing well, and the issues are done with, then we could always approach him on an extension early on, and give him his big ol signing bonus then. In the meantime, he's not out there floating around as a free agent. He's locked in for 2015 and we could revisit at any time once the chips fall where Goodell says.

...or it could just be a one year rental :)

Right, which goes to my original point that I don't think it was in his best interest to negotiate something long term with anyone right now.

I agree, but at least at this point next year he can point to his time in Dallas and say -"See, I've been a perfect angel for 2 years now. I'm a changed Kraken."

I have some questions smarter people than me probably know.

If we re-upped him next year couldn't we offer him a pretty good signing bonus, then back load the contract to say year 5 or year 6? The reason I ask is Romo will be completely off the books by then won't he? :(

With Tony off the books and the cap going up doesn't it seem like money would be the least of the problems in resigning him?

I think this year was about rehabbing his rep. If he is going to cash in next year why not with us?

I would not take Odi in the first round. I just don't see the pass rush there.

That's certainly a valid point. I don't feel pressured one way or the other to take a certain position to be honest. Just go BPA.

You know, this multi-game suspension can work in our favor... let's say its 6 games (because of Mara no doubt)...
can you imagine the build-up to his first game as a Cowboy!?!.... and please let it be a division game.

I can see it now... Dallas sitting at 4-2, coming off a tough loss due to a late game fumble by their rookie RB...
Its a home game and there are signs everywhere saying "Release the Kracken"... JerryWorld actually turns
into the DeathStar... a place where opposing teams fear to play due to a loud angry mob and their monster.

Why would he do that now when his value will never be lower? When there is no one else even interested in bidding?

If he keeps his nose clean this year there will be teams falling all over themselves to sign him, why take an offer from Jerry now when he can get a bidding war going next year?

I was talking about the Cowboys taking the risk and offering him a long term contract befitting a top 5 pass rusher.

It's a risk, but it's one I would take.

The Cowboys have come INCREDIBLY risk averse when it comes to player acquisition. The biggest risk they are ever willing to take these days seems to be in trading up in the draft, but they seem dead set NOT to risk CAP any longer. They really seem to want value for each dollar spent.

This deal is almost a mirror image of Melton's so I think Dallas was the driving force on the contract.
With other teams bailing out Dallas had leverage.
Plus it seems really only Tampa was gonna make a legit offer and Hardy coming in here for a couple days spoke to what team he wanted to join.

Dallas let him get out of the building but not out of town.

How is this a mirror of the Melton deal from the perspective we had Melton locked in for following years at fair value should he return to form in the first year.

We have no such guarantee now with Hardy, when our bargaining position was fairly strong.

They are going to have a pretty big cap hit next year for Hardy already if he plays all year. Since his contract is based on incentives for games played and sacks they won't count against this year's cap. His cap hit for this year is only 3.2m and he can make up to 13.1m. If he hits all the targets Dallas will get charged the 9.9m difference next year.

You are correct in saying they could extend him with a large signing bonus to lower his cap hit, but it will be large either way, unless he barley plays this year, which would stink anyways. Sorry if I further confused the situation.

clearly the extensive negotiations where about Dallas not being on hook in case things take left turn for Hardy in bad way. Kudos to Stephen for getting possible the best pass rusher in football for no guaranteed money. That is rare.

But only for 1 year. We can't even franchise him after that so he's a free agent in 2016. In this case they should stop being tight with their money and sign him long term.

You can characterize it however you like but its also fair to say that we have to be the favorites to retain him considering he just took what appears to be less money to play here. He sure looks happy doing it too.

This means we can wait until next year to spend a first on a pass rusher too. We aren't desperate anymore at least for the time being.

How did we determine that he took less money to come here?

I don't like this deal at all. I don't think he's gonna be a Cowboy after 2016 which is too bad.
