I have some questions smarter people than me probably know.

If we re-upped him next year couldn't we offer him a pretty good signing bonus, then back load the contract to say year 5 or year 6? The reason I ask is Romo will be completely off the books by then won't he? :(

With Tony off the books and the cap going up doesn't it seem like money would be the least of the problems in resigning him?

I think this year was about rehabbing his rep. If he is going to cash in next year why not with us?

If they bite the bullet on Romo's cap hit this year, it's all pretty manageable going forward...at least in part b/c they didn't bite on the long term deal to Murray.
There's room for Dez, Freddy, and Hardy longer term if they want it.

How did we determine that he took less money to come here?

That's fair but it's the characterization I come up with considering the TB saga and the nature of a one year deal. He at the very least could have allowed TB or some other team to negotiate for a better deal. i just get the impression that he chose to come here and wants to be a Cowboy.

I hope he really, really, really loves playing here this year.

I know he's going to go for the money, but it'd be nice to at least have matching rights next year.

Marinelli better get Kraken then on a good nickname. Pressure is on.

Exactamundo.....did anyone really think the Jones' were going to get the better of this deal? Dallas does get to lease Hardy this year only because of the current situation he is in. So for the first year----advantage Dallas. But love or hate Rosenhaus, Hardy is only 26 and will get his big money contract next year. I am sure Dallas wanted to wrap up Hardy for longer but at a discounted rate. No way Jose. If Hardy plays as expected this year, Dallas will HAVE to overpay for him in 2016. Only a handful of players in this league command that salary..........and he is/will be one. Dallas will and should be able to pay him by reworking contracts and making some moves and creating cap space.

In today's NFL, franchise QB and elite pass rushing dominant DE are positiions you do overpay for----these type of players do not hit the open market, especially in their prime. You do not overpay for RB or WR.

But I really think that there is an understanding right now between Hardy and the FO, if he has a year like 2013, he will remain a Cowboy in 2016 and beyond. The Cowboys cannot be that stupid to let him walk if that happens.

After 2016 he will become a free agent and will go to the highest bidder. We will not have any leverage whatsoever in 2016 in trying to keep him unless we outbid other suitors.

They are going to have a pretty big cap hit next year for Hardy already if he plays all year. Since his contract is based on incentives for games played and sacks they won't count against this year's cap. His cap hit for this year is only 3.2m and he can make up to 13.1m. If he hits all the targets Dallas will get charged the 9.9m difference next year.

You are correct in saying they could extend him with a large signing bonus to lower his cap hit, but it will be large either way, unless he barley plays this year, which would stink anyways. Sorry if I further confused the situation.

Maybe it will take up majority of our rollover plus whatever happens with a Carr cut/paycut.

Per-game roster bonuses that are deemed NLTBE, like most of Hardy's will be, get charged to the cap as soon as they are earned. His sack incentives won't get charged to the cap until the end of the season. So, once we know the length of his suspension (if any), we'll know how much cap room we'll need to carry into this season for him.

I think this is a really great deal for both parties. If people do not see the absolute genius in the structure of this deal then there is nothing I can do for you. Great job here!

We are lucky to have you.

The biggest thing to me was limiting the guaranteed and they did that. It's a great contract.

If they want to pay him big money later they will have an inside track. I can't remember Jerry letting an elite pass rusher walk.

Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't sure and hoped someone would help. So they need to set aside around 6-10m more for this year.

That should be better than getting a huge bill next year.

Could have been he already knew where TB was willing to go and it was not as far as the Boys would go.

It's conjecture by both of us.
