So, like a number of people have said for days - we are looking at multiple comp. picks next year. 3rd for Murray etc..... Does Hardy being cut by his team previously count against us for comp. picks or no ? (If so , I guess that would wipe out the 3rd ?)

No.

Great question and no it should not count against the Cowboys when it comes to comp picks.

It's like the Ware signing last year by Denver.

We have a huge amount of cap space available in 2017. If Dallas wants to resign him, they will. They can make the contract similar to Tyron Smith's contract to load money into specific years and spread a big signing bonus out over 5 years.

Exactamundo.....did anyone really think the Jones' were going to get the better of this deal? Dallas does get to lease Hardy this year only because of the current situation he is in. So for the first year----advantage Dallas. But love or hate Rosenhaus, Hardy is only 26 and will get his big money contract next year. I am sure Dallas wanted to wrap up Hardy for longer but at a discounted rate. No way Jose. If Hardy plays as expected this year, Dallas will HAVE to overpay for him in 2016. Only a handful of players in this league command that salary..........and he is/will be one. Dallas will and should be able to pay him by reworking contracts and making some moves and creating cap space.

In today's NFL, franchise QB and elite pass rushing dominant DE are positiions you do overpay for----these type of players do not hit the open market, especially in their prime. You do not overpay for RB or WR.

But I really think that there is an understanding right now between Hardy and the FO, if he has a year like 2013, he will remain a Cowboy in 2016 and beyond. The Cowboys cannot be that stupid to let him walk if that happens.

I think this was a situation where you take that risk and give him the long term deal he wants. All that guaranteed money isn't hitting the 2015 cap. I'd gamble on this young elite player now rather than hope I can out bid a number of teams next year.

I understand the point, but that is assuming this was their stance to begin with.

Michael Bennett is a Rosenhaus client and this is structured in a similar fashion. They may not have even wanted a long term deal. There is a trend and precedent set for pass rushers getting prove it deals and cashing in.

It is not a one way street. Dallas likely wanted to avoid excess risk, Rosenhaus and Hardy might have wanted to bet on themselves.

3 years, $45M, $20M guaranteed feels about right, though obviously I'm pulling numbers out of thin air. Hardy might have been amenable, because it would have provided him a hefty chunk now (one that other teams likely would not have offered) with a chance to cash in again before hitting the age of 30. We take on risk, in return for which we get the guy locked up for what can reasonably be expected to be the balance of Romo's career (maybe he goes a bit longer (who knows?) but I wouldn't want to bet on it). If Romo goes down early, we're going to be awful for a few years anyway, but now we have a prized asset locked up at a nice price and can trade him away for draft picks that can accelerate the rebuild. Doing so will accelerate the cap hit, but do we really care in circumstances where we're relying on Weeden or Vaughan or some other JAG to lead the team?

Who can say whether such a deal was available. Maybe it wasn't. But that's the kind of deal I would have chased if I were the Cowboys FO.

There is about zero chance that he is going to take a deal that has him becoming a free agent at age 30. I would also say that half of the guaranteed money of other top pass rushers is a likely nonstarter. You want him to take the same deal Michael Bennett now wants out of essentially.

I don't think the Cowboys will have to do a lot of rework to extend Hardy next season. Cowboys should have a decent amount of cap next year, depending on what they do the rest of this FA period. JMO

I hope he's so happy he re ups with us. Thing is if he takes off and does so well I hope we don't pull the wait and see approach

If every contract was like this, there would be a lot less off field problems and you could be assured that every player would be all in every game. So I will take this contract all day every day.

There's already 20 pages nobody is reading all that ****

I have to say there are some lazy posters on here who apparently find it difficult to navigate through large threads and want things spoon fed to them.

I was thinking the same thing. If he plays to his potential couldn't they start to work a deal before the contract ends?

Regardless of what he does next year, I doubt he'll be a Cowboy after this year. If he has an awful season, we'd most likely be happy to be done with him. And if he has an amazing season, he'll be the top free agent next year and you know how eager Dallas is to hand out $200 million contracts (they're not).

This exactly. I'm sure he had plenty of longer term deals on the table from the Cowboys and other teams. He knows that if he comes out this year and plays up to his potential, he will earn his one and only monster contract most of these players ever have a chance at. I also doubt we resign him next year, however if we have the cap space and the coaches like him, pass rusher is one of the few positions this team will shell out for. Who knows, maybe after this year they have to decide between Dez and Hardy (hah, that'll piss some people off).

All anyone needs to know is Hardy got exactly the deal he wanted. He is going to leverage this year into the long term deal he thinks he deserves. He has no choice but to go all out this year so I count this as a massive win for the Cowboys.

It's like the Ware signing last year by Denver.

Hardy was on a franchise tag last year and not retained. they didn't cut him like we did Ware. The question is how the LTBE incentives are calculated in the comp pick formula.

And when we trade for Peterson that won't affect our comp picks, either.
