La'el Collins Thread - Cleared post 767; visited Cowboys - 05/06/15

Confused why the title of the thread says, "to visit Cowboys 1st", when he has already visited with the Bills and even met with some Dolphins players.

The Cowboys are the 1st team he will visit.(scheduled to visit) He had dinner with Ryan that wasn't him going to their facilities. Same for the players from Miami.

Every team will offer him 3 years, likely fully guaranteed. It's all about the opportunity.

Yep. That's what I'm saying. The max for a UDFA is 3 years for $1.5 million. Any team would be stupid not to offer him the max. So it comes down to other things. You can't outbid for this guy. He has to want to play for you. That rules out any dysfunctional teams. Fortunately for us, we've been building a reputation the past few years as a family environment.

FWIW, Gil Brandt thinks he projects as a guard and not a tackle,,, which is fine by me, anyplace he can fill in is a good thing.

Gil also thought Stephen McGee could play. They all swing and miss from time to time.

Wonder if theres a way to write into his contract that after three years he is not a restricted free agent. Would certainly be something that could persuade him to choose Dallas, if it's even possible.

I can't imagine Rex Ryan has an easy time convincing a guy to come play in the Buffalo...that's where players go to freeze and be forgotten.

Can you remember the last Bills game you actually watched? Nick folks 2 50 yard fg's several years ago....

Collins said if he was drafted after the 3rd round he wouldn't sign.

That was if somebody actually drafted him. Since he wasn't drafted he can't re-enter the draft. If you go undrafted you enter free agency.

Here's Broaddus' writeup on Collins from the Star Magazine. He even states that he might have to play inside or at RT. Only player listed above him was Scherff.

La'el Collins
LSU • SENIOR HT: 6-4 • WT: 305 • AGE: 21
40-Yard Bench Vertical Broad 5.14 21 27” 9’

SCOUTING REPORT: Played as the Tigers’ left tackle. Powerful man. Works to finish his block. When he gets in trouble he will become overextended and lunge. Able to adjust to the line games. Is in far better control going inside as opposed to working to his outside. Hands tend to go outside the frame. Was able to get some nice push on Dante Fowler of Florida. Able to seal the corner to allow the running back to the outside. Has to be careful when defender pulls him forward with his balance. Is one of those linemen who plays with upper body power and he works to climb the block as he pushes. Will have snaps where he is off balance. Will carry his hands low in pass pro. Can push his man wide. Tends to catch blocks more than punch. Can adjust to sudden movement. Might have to play inside or at right tackle. DID YOU KNOW? He’s essentially a lock to go in the first round, but there is plenty of debate about where Collins should line up as a pro. He started 13 games at left guard as sophomore, before starting the last 26 games of his career at left tackle. COMPARISON: James Carpenter, New York Jets It might not always look pretty with Collins, but similar to Carpenter, he consistently gets the job done and offers position versatility.

If Dallas somehow lands him, this OL should be locked down for several years. Imagine 4 of 5 being blue-chippers :)

How soon are they allowed to sign their second contract could we sign his contract with the understanding that he will get more money by midseason

But, there was another report on Saturday that said the NFL claimed he couldn't do that.

He couldn't re-enter the draft if he wasn't drafted
If he was drafted, he could refuse to sign, sit out for a year and re-enter the draft in 2016

He also tried to pull out of the draft and be placed in the supplemental draft this summer to buy some time. The League said no.

No one will ever know if he really would've sat out a year if drafted in 4th-7th round. I would've wasted a 7th to call his bluff and have exclusive rights.

The thought of adding a talent like La'el Collins to this offensive line has me geeked right now. This would be the coup to end all coups.

They have some nice pieces but no QB.

All Buffalo needs is a QB to become a serious contender. I still wouldn't play there if I had a choice though.
